Annual Meeting: New Board & Disappearing Towns
Article by Cynthia Beall, Secretary& Photos by Kay Hartzell
The new slate of officers for 2015-2016 was approved at the Friends’ Annual
Meeting on March 10, 2015. President Anne Walker welcomed the crowd of more
than 60 people to the newly renovated Community Activity Room and the Friends’
first annual meeting in the expanded facility since construction was completed in Fall
2014. Walker thanked all those present for their help in making the expansion
possible through their volunteer hours and participation in various Friends’
fundraising activities over the years.
Officers for 2015-2016 are Anne Walker, President; Barbara Bailey, Treasurer and
Scholarship Selection Coordinator; Cynthia Beall, Secretary. The Board position of
vice president remains open. Friends members interested in helping lead the direction of the Friends into 2016 are
invited to contact a board member or email [email protected] for more information. Additional
board members are Emily Malin, Marketing/Newsletter; Barbara Pressgrove, Past President & NEKLS
Representative; Kristen Dymacek, Spring Plant Sale Coordinator; Kay Hartzell and Mary Lou Klein, members-atlarge; and ad hoc board member & library Director, Kathy Johnston.
Following the brief business meeting, the Friends welcomed dynamic speaker Dr. M.J. Morgan. Morgan serves
as a Kansas historian and research director at the Chapman Center for Rural Studies at Kansas State University.
Morgan spoke about the nearly 9,000 disappeared towns and communities in the state and research on these lost
Kansas places. Through the center and teaching at KSU, Morgan leads undergraduate and graduate students in
research techniques used to locate lost towns. Architecture and agriculture are key elements to locating a missing
town. There are 87 lost towns in Douglas County alone. Some challenges in researching include a town’s migration
as the population dwindled, townsfolk photographing their families not their towns, relying on the memories of
people, and towns changing names. (continued on page 2)

Annual Meeting (Continued from page 1)
After her presentation, M.J. Morgan spent an hour answering questions and visiting with
attendees. Any person interested in more information on this fascinating subject should visit
lostkscommunities.omeka.net. Dr. Morgan stated that she welcomes any information on lost
Kansas towns in addition to inquiries.
Special thanks to Jitters Java and Ice, a local restaurant, for donating the beverages
served during the event. Door prizes sponsored by the Friends included Ghost Towns of
Kansas: A Traveler’s Guide and Ghost Towns of Kansas by Daniel C. Fitzgerald. A door
prize sponsored by the Chapman Center included a book authored by Dr. M.J. Morgan and
her students, Broughton Kansas: Portrait of a lost town 1869-1966!
Morgan’s talk was sponsored by the Kansas Humanities Council Speakers Bureau which conducts
and supports community-based programs, serves as a financial resource through an active grant-making
program, and encourages Kansans to engage in the civic and cultural life of their communities.

Night of 1,000 Stars a Sparkling Success
By Emily Malin, Marketing/Newsletter
After listening to wonderful stories from local “stars” Loretta Robson, Marvin
Jardon, and Anne Walker, the approximately 50 attendees gathered in the Activity Room
for hot chocolate, animal crackers, and oranges. Many wore their pajamas and brought
their favorite stuffed toy along.
New this year, the Friends of the Library gave each child in
attendance a new book to take home. The children loved receiving new books so we will continue
distributing at future events. This program shows that reading is fun and a life-long skill
EVERYONE needs! Thanks to our readers and our attendees for making the event a success!!
Fall 2015 BookTALK – Today’s Mysteries

series is called Today’s Mysteries. Books to be shared are: Bootlegger’s Daughter by Margaret Maron, Reflex by Dick
Francis, and Shroud for a Nightingale by P. D. James. Mark your calendar for 7 p.m. at the library on September 15th,

President’s Message: We’re NOT Done Yet!
By Anne Walker
Thanks to the generosity of our members, the Friends of the Library continue to contribute
to the efficiency and attractiveness of the Baldwin City Library. We recently received
delivery of custom-built, oak, display shelves to highlight new books and seasonal or theme
exhibits. Look for plaques recognizing our most generous donors on these shelves.
In addition, look for the special plaque in the reading nook: “Donated by the Friends of the
Library in honor of Kathy Johnston, Library Director.” We are very pleased to acknowledge
Kathy’s long service to the Baldwin City Library and the community.
The library is now offering laminating service to patrons and continues to offer fax and
copying services for a small fee.
Your interest and support of our Spring Plant Sale and Garage Sale are sincerely
appreciated and allow us to continue to upgrade and enhance the library facilities and its
services.
SEED LENDING LIBRARY
The Seed Lending Library now has seeds for your pollinator garden: Balloon Milkweed, Mexican
Sunflowers, Joe Pye Weed, and Marigold mix. We have plenty of spinach and peas for Spring Planting.
Come check it out!!

discover new titles published each month. Look for copies available to take home from the library, or skim
single copies in waiting rooms and coffee shops around town.
Purl Jam Update
The Library's Purl Jam Monday night knitting group is winding down for a summer break.
We are thrilled to have knitted and crocheted over 360 items for charity in the past 18
months. Our last meeting will be on May 18th at 6:30 p.m. We will resume the first
Monday after Labor Day, September 14th. Everyone is welcome, from master knitters and
crocheters, to those wanting to learn.
