BASEHOR COMMUNITY LIBRARY 2015 SUMMER READING BIRTH TO 6TH GRADE JUNE 1 - JULY 26 Sign-up begins Monday, May 18 Summer reading is FUN and simple! NO keeping track of books. NO keeping track of minutes. The only requirement to earn a weekly prize is to read everyday & the best part...you can read anything you want! Our goal is to get you into the habit of reading. How do you join? Here is the scoop: Children ages 3 - 11 years are eligible. So are children Birth - 2 years! (See page 4) Sign up begins Monday, May 18 either at the library or online at www.basehorlibrary.org Keep track of each day you read starting Monday, May 25. Then, beginning June 1st, log in to the Summer Reading link & click on this button → Mark the date & the Quantity of days you read for the week, (see box →) them come to the library & pick a prize from our treasure chest. NEW prizes added weekly! Maximum of 8 weekly prizes. Play “BAM! POW! READ! Bingo” and earn a free book! Pick up a bingo card when you register and follow the directions. One free book per child. AND EVEN MORE PRIZES...come by the library every week & enter your name in our special weekly drawings for cool prizes!! PLUS...all kids who finish our program will be eligible to win one of our SUPER prizes! Basehor Community Library Summer Reading Kickoff Saturday, May 30 9:00am-Noon On May 30th you can see some of the biggest, coolest, most fun trucks and working vehicles parked in the library’s south parking lot! AND you can meet local heroes who use those cool vehicles! There will be a firetruck, ambulance, big tractor, state/county/city police cars & MORE. Also you can meet and talk to members of our local VFW and volunteers from the Leavenworth County Humane Society (along with some cute animals!) and a surprise inside the library! June 3 - Become a Superhero! 11:00am or 2:00pm July 1 - Performer: Operation Wildlife presents “Dayshift” **Registration required 11:00am or 1:00pm (earlier time!) Make a cape, color a mask and then try your Superhero powers on our obstacle course. Free & open to the public June 10 - Performer: Jay & Leslie present “Hapless Heroes and Their Funny Feats” Volunteers from OWLS will present 5 different LIVE hawks and falcons. Learn about their hunting habits and unique characteristics. July 8 - SUPER Science Part 2 11:00am or 2:00pm 11:00am or 2:00pm Free & open to the public Some are born to be heroic, and others just bumble into it. Jay and Leslie explore feats of skill, feats of daring, and feats of dumb luck using juggling, a touch of magic and LOTS of laughter! **Registration required June 17 - SUPER Science Part 1 July 15 - Superhero Shrinky Dinks 11:00am or 2:00pm 11:00am or 2:00pm **Registration required **Registration required Join Miss Vickey as she demonstrates some of the most awesome & fun science experiments...oh and YOU get to try some, too! Shrinky Dinks are so much fun! Create Superhero medallions then shrink them in the oven! SUPER COOL! Science projects that glow in the dark, fly, bounce, float, and are just plain FUN! First Mondays, 6:30-7:30pm, K-6th Grade Second Sundays, 1:30-2:30pm, K-6th Grade June 1 ▪ July 6 ▪ August 3 June 14 ▪ July 12 ▪ August 9 Dogs are great listeners! That is why we have invited the wonderful dogs from the Leavenworth Human Animal Bond group (and their human helpers) to come to the library this summer. They will be here the 1st Mondays from 6:30-7:30 and 2nd Sundays 1:30-2:30. So come to the library, grab a book and READ to a dog! Super Buddies : Sleepover @ The Library LEGO WeDo Robotics Friday, July 10 2nd - 6th Grade Friday Check-in between 7-8pm Check-out by 9am Saturday LEGO WeDo Robotics uses LEGO bricks in combination with a simple computer program that allows kids to build models featuring working motors and sensors. On Friday, July 10, we invite kids ages 6-12 plus their chaperone to sign up for an evening they will not forget... a sleepover AT THE LIBRARY. From the time you arrive until lights out, we have activities planned...some include REAL LIVE DOGS! If you are interested, pick up a registration form at the library. It includes an Information Sheet with “Frequently Asked Questions” & “What to Bring and NOT Bring”. Space is limited. Registration form must be turned in by Thursday, July 9. Get your part, read the script, pick out props, practice all together, then it’s showtime! No acting experience necessary. And YES, the library is providing pizza so everyone will have lots of energy! Families are encouraged to come at 2:00 to view the final performance. Reading every day is a great way for you and your baby to bond! Here is all you do: Sign up begins Monday, May 18 at the library or online. Read to your child every day; keep track beginning June 1. When you have read at least 30 books to your child, they will receive a prize! After you read 60 books, your child will receive a free board book. StoryTimes @ the library June 2 - August 13 Friday Movies for Children Patrick has a busy summer planned for our Storytime children (and parents!). Showtime: 10:00am Starting in June we will kick things off with comic superheroes, policemen, fathers and librarians. In July we celebrate animal vets, firemen, ninjas and a talent show (& tell) by our storytime heroes. Then in August join us as we honor construction workers and comic superheroes once again for our dress up summer time party!
