Parish Council Chairman's Letter
Spring is here, the daffodils are out, the
holes in our roads appear bigger and
deeper and the grass has started to grow
but at least the sun has decided to make
an appearance (unless an eclipse is
underway).
It’s been a very quiet month, with not a lot to report,
no decent bandwagons to jump on and no real
controversy in our village.
It will soon be time for the May celebrations though, a
time I look forward to and for the village to come
together and have some fun. There will be those that
complain about a bit of noise but as I will be making
some of it, all I can ask is that we embrace the
weekend and use it to join up rather than a time for
split.
We are still looking for some volunteers for
watercourse patrol, so if you fancy a walk, get in touch
and if you have a dog that likes pulling a branch or
two from the water, all the better.
I hear there is an election in May also.
We still wait to hear what will happen with the
barracks. It is a travesty that such a facility lies
dormant and hope for some good news very soon.

The Park & Ride team are working with the Cambridgeshire Public Services

2015. Contractors are appointed and the project will be complete before the new

Self-Contained Accommodation
Required in Bassingbourn
We are looking for a one-bedroom or studio selfcontained home in Bassingbourn for my mother.
This can be a small house, apartment, annexe, or a
self-contained area of an existing home.
She is 76 years old, in good health, is very budget
conscious as she only receives a small pension.
Ideally the rent should be fully inclusive, but that’s
not a pre-requisite necessarily.
She will be the best tenant you could ask for (clean,
tidy, quiet) – references from previous landlords can
be provided.
Please let us know if you have anything coming
available in the next few months. Thank you.

Tales from my allotment by
“Farmer Brown’s daughter” — Rebecca Bond
(email me at [email protected])
Oh dear, faced with the politically charged cartoon opposite, the
allotment and I seem to be poles (or is it polls?) apart. But we
must all take part by voting in order to have our say, and I don’t have to remind
you that it took a lot of time, effort, commitment and sheer GUTS to get women
the vote, and in turn as near equality as we have …. I still know that a man could
get paid more for doing my job!
BUT ALL IS EQUAL DOWN ON THE ALLOTMENT! It’s absolutely all about how
much effort one puts in as to how much one gets out. Now, that’s not to say that
we may encounter a few obstacles along the way: weather, weeds and pests to
name three, but gardening of any kind does require more than just interest—it
needs planning, learning, practical hard work, PATIENCE, and help too.
I look at the ‘youngsters’ we have at work in the office —all keen and eager, with
so much energy and excitement—but oh so short of experience, and that’s where
us old’ns can come in and help. My daily advice ranges from how to operate a
computer system, through how to phrase (let alone spell) an email with an
important message, right through to yelling “your shirt’s hanging out” as they
depart to visit the head of IT at some City bank who’s been around the block and
likes nothing better than some fresh, new, young blood to tease!
“Down on the allotment” … I’ve found everybody to be happy to both give and
receive advice, assistance, loaning of tools, physical help …. and we share
seeds, produce and companionship in return. Everybody helps everybody else
because they want everybody to succeed, and success is measured in produce.
If only life was that simple eh?
Mark and I have just come back from America: New York and Florida (family
commitment and a short vacation). I have NEVER seen so much food consumed
in a sitting, and over a sustained period of time, and so little of it is fresh fruit and/
or vegetables. Mind you, I’ve LOVED it all … I’m the first to devour a 2x2x2x2
from the diner in the morning. That’s 2 eggs, 2 sausages, 2 bacon and 2
pancakes … it used to be for 2 dollars as well, but those days are long gone.
And it’s not long before I’m tucking in to huge sandwiches, or worse—chicken
wings, for a light lunch, and then at around 5pm, it’s Italian or steak or lobster …
we are fit to burst, and pretty broke! It’s back to salads for us this week/month.
I did enjoy the Floridian weather though. 80+ degrees every day … sun shining,
blue sky, light breeze—and we’re talking March! My allotment would love a bit of
that to bring those brave over-Wintering beans, peas and onions along. But very
very soon, we’ll be planting and waiting for it all to pop up! ROLL ON SPRING.

“Letters to the Editor”
APRIL BULLETIN FROM CAMBRIDGESHIRE FIRE AND
RESCUE SERVICE
FREE fire safety seminars for businesses
DO you own or manage a business? Do you know what fire safety laws apply
and how to conform to legislation?
Cambridgeshire Fire and Rescue Service is running free seminars for you to
swot up on your knowledge - why not organise one for the businesses in your
village?
We hold at least two seminars, lasting about two-and-a-half hours, every month
and whether your business runs out of small industrial unit, is a side-street
coffee shop or is a licensed premises, our free workshops will help you better
understand important fire safety legislation – and may even save you money in
the long-run.
Seminars start at 10am and run on the second Tuesday of each month in
Cambridge, and the third Tuesday of the month in Peterborough, but we can
organise them on an ad-hoc basis. If there are a number of businesses in one
location or trade that would like to attend a seminar, the fire service is keen to
accommodate.
To find out more or book a free place on a seminar, call (01733) 353206.
Make sure fire safety still stays at the forefront of your mind in April – and don’t
forget to test your smoke alarm.
Find out more on www.cambsfire.gov.uk and find us on Facebook, Twitter and
Instagram.
PARKING ON THE HIGH STREET
I wonder if it is time to think about some form of deterrent to parking on the
pavements opposite the shops? It seems that people are always going to park
there, even if there are spaces on the other side, and this winter saw cars and
vans parking on there, often facing the wrong way, with headlights on towards
on-coming traffic; some even doing a three point turn half on and half off the
pavement!
Maybe some wrought iron post, in keeping with the village?

Village Market at May Mayhem
A village market will be one of the many events taking place in
Bassingbourn as part of the May 'Mayhem' event on Sunday 24th May.
The event will be focused on the High Street, with the market located at
the old school playground at The Limes, where there is expected to be
around 12 stalls. If space runs out at The Limes, there may be an
extended 'street' market with additional stalls at The Old Taxi Works
yard or at The Old Gas Works, both on the High Street.
Generally the day's events will start at 10am and finish at 2pm with a
walking-parade from the Village Green to 'The Field of Dreams' at
On-Set.
The Hoops is hosting a lively steam day (see opposite) and the Book
Cafe will be opening at 10am for refreshments and a book stall. There
may also be dance displays on the Village Green and a vintage vehicle
parade.
Mayhem will have a 1940’s theme to celebrate the 70th anniversary
of the end of World War II in 1945.
Market stallholders should let Simon Saggers
([email protected]) know if they are planning to attend
so he can relay approximate numbers to the 'Mayhem' committee. He
will not be allocating spaces and it is a “turn up and pitch” arrangement
as normal. Stallholders should bring their own tables as the Church
Rooms will not be handy and should set up before 10am. Recommended parking for stallholders will be behind The Limes, on Knutsford
Road or just off Spring Lane since the vintage vehicles will be
assembling along Spring Lane.
Market regular Eliane Baignet ([email protected]) is on
the organising committee for 'Mayhem', so please contact her direct if you have any questions about the event.
The ‘Mayhem’ market will replace the June market originally scheduled.
Other market dates in 2015 will be Saturday 26th September on the
War Memorial Green at the Cross and the Christmas Market on
12th December in the church.

Bassingbourn Community Primary School
Vikings Raid Bassingbourn!
Years 3 and 4 at Bassingbourn Community Primary School had a
terrifying but informative visit for a large hairy Viking on Friday. As
part of their project ‘Settlers’ they have been exploring the life of
early settlers to Britain. They have been dipping into the lives of
Romans, Anglo-Saxons and Vikings.
During their day they dressed as Vikings and Anglo Saxons and
spent the day with a historical character, Thowald. They looked
into the food and hunting, weaponry and warfare and religion and
burials.
The Viking visitor startled the pupils by demonstrating some excellent axe and sword skills by chopping off a Saxon ‘head’ (melon!)
A fantastic day for all!

Bassingbourn Parish Church News
The Parish Church of St Peter and St Paul, Bassingbourn:
From the Vicar
At this time of year Anglican churches up and down the country hold their
Annual Parochial Church Meeting (APCM), the time when we elect our
Churchwardens and our Parochial Church Council members. Together
with the Vicar, these are the people who have particular responsibility for
the life and mission of the Church. The APCM is also when we review
and celebrate all that God has done in the Church over the previous 12
months. And there is a great deal to give thanks for including our newly refurbished
church room; new people joining our fellowship; opportunities to grow in our faith,
including through home groups and the Alpha course (which is currently running at the
Hoops); and seeing our plans to improve the facilities in the church building taking shape.
But this time of year is also very much about looking forward with hope for the future. And
for the Church that’s about seeing our Vision being realised. That’s why we worked
together over the past year to discern God’s Vision for our future, encapsulated in our
Vision Statement: ‘Lives transformed through knowing Jesus’.
And this time of year speaks to us of transformation. In my garden the slender branches
of the weeping willow are noticeably turning a yellow-green colour; and the daffodils are
already delighting us with a riot of colour which is, for me, a sign that spring has come
again.
For Christians spring has a special significance: it speaks to us of Easter. In the renewal
of nature after the death of winter we see a parable of God's dealing with the whole of
creation, transforming death into new life. Christians believe that the One who was
uniquely the Son of God gave up his life for the love of humanity. On Good Friday, Jesus
was crucified, died and was buried. But God raised him from the dead; and by his
resurrection he has defeated the power of death and brought the offer of forgiveness and
transformation to the world.
Why not come and share that joy this Easter? Join us at the Parish Church on Easter
Sunday at 11am for Family Communion - come and worship the Christ who died and
rose again to offer us the possibility of transformation and a better hope for the future.
Happy Easter!
