The WOLVES’ HOWL
Teacher of the Year By: Grant Miller
There are few educators in this world that really
make significant impacts on
their students. Mr. Matthew
Reid has touched the lives of
countless students over the
course of his 14-year teaching
career. Anybody who has had
the pleasure of having a class
taught by Mr. Reid can attest
that he’s one special teacher.
Therefore, it comes as no surprise that Mr. Reid has been
voted as the Saginaw Valley
League Teacher of the Year.

about his recent achievement,
and it’s quite apparent how
grateful and honored he feels
to be chosen for this award.
Reid has been a teacher since
2001, he started his career here
at Central, then spent six years
at Wenona High School before
coming back to us in 2012.
Although this is a very prestigious award, Mr. Reid is no
stranger to winning these types
of awards. In 2010, he received the Milken Family
Foundation National Educator
of the Year award, and in 2011
he was awarded the Michigan
Alternative Education Teacher
of the Year. He also achieved
the Hal Peterson Award for
Teaching Excellence in 2014.
So his resume says it all, Mr.
Reid truly deserves this year’s
SVL Teacher of Year Award.
Past all of his impressive achievements, I wanted to
see what really made Mr. Reid
the amazing person he is. I
wanted to know where it all
started for him and when he
realized he wanted to be a
teacher. Mr. Reid hadn’t had
the best high school experience so when he became a
teacher he believed he could
make high school a much more
positive experience for students. Mr. Reid’s favorite subjects to teach are American
Literature and Film Literature.
Outside of school, Mr. Reid
volunteers with most of his
free time, and when he’s not
volunteering, he enjoys working on his classic 1963 Chevy
Corvette. A little known fact
about Mr. Reid is that he collects and shoots a wide variety
of firearms. Mr. Reid is really
a jack-of-all-trades however,
he shines the brightest when it
comes to his teaching skills.
We are very proud to
call our very own Mr. Matthew Reid the Saginaw Valley
League Teacher of the Year.
Congrats Mr. Reid!

Central’s Star Students
By: Lauren Bedell
Every year the Saginaw Valley
League picks two athletes in local
high schools to receive the Scholar
Athlete of the Year award. This
award is given to one senior boy and
senior girl. This year at Bay City
Central, the SVL Award was given to
Chris Jacobs and Julia Bublitz. Jacobs and Bublitz are two very involved students at school who participate in a variety of things ranging
anywhere from playing almost every
sport, to being involved in multiple
choirs and musical productions.
Bublitz has been involved in a
handful of different sports at school
and almost every club and committee
you can think of. Since her freshman
year of school she has been on the
soccer, swim, volleyball, softball, and
the bowling team. This year, Julia
competed as the only female diver on
the Varsity girl’s swim team.
Jacobs started his high school
sports career off right by making the
JV basketball team and starting his
four years of football with the Freshman football team. Being apart of the
basketball team, the track team, and
the football team, football was the the
peak of his career for high school
sports. Receiving a surplus of awards
for his work on the football field,
some of them include 1st team all
conference, 1st team dream team, and
all academic.
Along with talent and hard work,
these awards also come from having
a well rounded academic life as well.
Jacobs has maintained an exceptional
GPA along with a well balanced social and athletic life. Next year, because of these accomplishments, he
has earned a spot on the Northwood
University football team as an offensive guard.
Her strong sport this year would
have to be bowling, seeing as how
she is the top 20 in the state for female bowlers in her age group, and
has received an All State Academic
award on her team. She is a very dedicated and competitive athlete and
doesn’t stop short of perfection inside
and outside the classroom.
Aside from sports, she has been
involved in almost every AP class
that the school has to offer, still managing time for her sports and extracurricular activities such as the musical and choir. Bublitz is ending her
senior year strong placing second in
the senior class, and being named the
class of 2015’s Salutatorian. Next
year she will be attending the University of Michigan. Both Jacobs and
Bublitz will be receiving honor cords
to walk with at graduation in the
spring.
Good things are happening with
our student athletes here at BCC.

Girls Tennis Team Parking Cars, Not Hitting Balls
When you look at the
back parking lot of Bay City
Central High School you
should expect to see cars.
Instead, you will see the Central JV and Varsity Tennis
teams practicing for their
upcoming season. Where are
the tennis courts? The ones
housed at Central were torn
down last spring in place of
the shot put and discus circles for the track team.
We practiced on the
courts at school everyday if it
wasn’t cold outside,” Jenny
Wu, Central girls tennis team
player, said, “It was very
convenient for the kids who
can’t drive and can’t always
get a ride.” The girls team is
now starting to practice at
different courts around town
after their opening spring
training started in the back
parking lot. “I have to walk
home and then walk to Carroll Park. It takes a longer
time than need.” said Sydney
Hutchison, also a girls tennis
team player.
While re-doing the track,
all of the dirt was dumped on
the tennis courts which were
later torn up for the throwing
circles for the track team.
With the new slabs in place
where the tennis courts were,
By: Jenna Richard
the track team now has more
than one circle to practice on.
The tennis team recently contracted the rights to building
tennis courts at Thomas Jefferson Elementary School.
Even though the track team
now has better equipment,
the tennis team is still at a
loss for their tennis courts at
Central.
“We needed those tennis
courts at school.” Wu said.
As for the rest of the season,
the Central girls tennis team
will be practicing at different
courts around town and Central’s very own back parking
lot.
Homeless Shelter Gets Facelift By: Madison Rapcka
On February 16, a sprinkler pipe ruptured at the
CORY Place located in Bay
County’s Hampton Township.
The ruptured pipe forced the
five youth residents to relocate. After a month of displacement and fixing the shelter, Jheri McAfee, the agency’s executive director, says
she hopes to see residents
back in about two weeks.
The CORY Place is a shelter that houses homeless, runaway and throwaway teenagers. The purpose of the shelter
is to house youth who have
been forced to leave their
homes and have no where
else to go.
When the pipe ruptured
and caused extensive water
damage, the five residents
were forced to leave the shelter. They have been staying in
a local hotel. The Mid Michigan Community Action
Agency( MMCAA) has been
helping the residents while
they are staying at the hotel.
McAfee plans to reimburse
MMCAA using the insurance
money. She said that the insurance money is going to
cover all but $500 of the renovations to the CORY Place
facility. The cost to repair
everything is $30,000.
Since the work is still go-
ing on at the CORY Place, the
youth residents cannot return
to the facility. “Everything is
fine with us, but we work
with teenagers.” she said.
“Our facility is all torn up.
You walk in and you have
materials on the floor.”
To this day, the restoration
has included the replacement
of the ceiling in the room
where the pipe ruptured.
There has also been preparations for new carpet. McAfee
said she’s looking forward to
returning to the facility as
operations have been disrupted due to water damage and
construction.

Mutations Make Mayhem By: Collin Walker
Mutations in genes can increase
chances of breast cancer, muscular
dystrophy, and more. Mutations can
occur through the insertion of DNA,
deletion of DNA, duplication of
DNA, or through other methods.
However, a new procedure call
mutagenic chain reaction (MCR)
could help combat these mutations.
MCR makes wanted mutations easier
to implement by genetic engineers.
“MCR is remarkably active in all the
cells of the body, with one result being that such mutations are transmitted to offspring via the germ line with
95 percent efficiency,” said Valentino
Gantz from the University of California (Alan Boyle from NBC News).
MCR makes it possible to introduce a mutation on one chromosome
that is then copied onto another chromosome. MCR has already been used
into the prevention of malaria spreading by mosquitoes. It’s thought that
MCR could be used to find and fix
HIV-cells or even cancerous cells.
The downsides to this new technology is that it could be misused, or
these genetically modified organisms
could escape into the wild. When
asked about her thoughts on the
drawbacks of genetic interference by
humans, High School student Hannah
Lee replied, “An experiment could
wrong and kill everyone. If scientists
experimented on prisoners, and intro-
duced too much of a foreign gene, the
foreign genes could take over. They
should just leave it alone.”
Lee is not alone with her concerns, as many people think that genetically modifying organisms is unethical and could have dangerous
consequences.

Tyler Oakley Hosts YouTube Music Awards By: Haila Ackley
Almost everyone has used
YouTube at one time or another to
listen to music by a popular new artist
or watch a music video from their favorite singer. YouTube wanted to recognize the most popular songs and
their artists by hosting the YouTube
Music Awards.
On March 23rd, 50 artists were
awarded in numerous categories for
their popularity with the public on the
video viewing website. Tyler Oakley,
a YouTube sensation himself, hosted
the awards. The show was prerecorded, and YouTube created a new
channel just for the event, called
youtube.com/musicawards.
Among the winners were Taylor
Swift, Katy Perry, Snoop Dogg, Miley
Cyrus, and Sam Smith. There were
other winners that are newer, such as
2NE1, alt-J, Migos, and Tinashe.
at any time. The awards are produced
by Vice, a magazine and website that
highlights art, culture, and news.
In 2013 and 2014, the awards show
was a one-day take over of YouTube,
but it was not very popular. This year
they changed it, and it gained popularity. In 2014, the award show was modeled after the MTV Video Music
Awards to "highlight major stars and
up-and-coming
musicians
on
YouTube." Todd Spangler, an NY
digital editor for Variety magazine,
typed in an article about the awards.
Because the awards are still on the
special YouTube channel for the
event, they are available to be viewed

Don’t Look Back; You Won’t Like What You Find
The novel tells the life of
Samantha, a seventeen year
old who had it all -- popularity, wealth, and a dream
boyfriend. Until the night
she lost it all; her memory

You might think that it’ll
be one of those cliché stories

going to turn out, you know

mind as you're reading it,
but it doesn’t really go in
that direction. Samantha

he is presented in this book
and you can almost fall as
hard as Samantha does.
“I was stuck in a life I
didn’t remember squeezed

her, the more I was starting
to hate her,” said Samantha.
This book really catches
your attention by the way
the plot twists, leaving you
itching to get to the end to
find out who the culprit is.
By how easy it is to visualize the way the words form
the story, it doesn’t take
much for the story to draw

it is a must read on my list.

Shrek The Musical By: Brady Corrion
Garber High School performed Shrek the Musical last
weekend. Set in a once upon a
time land, Shrek, a giant green
Ogre who has been terrorized his
whole life, suddenly turned upside
down when fairy tale creatures
invade his humble swamp. Shrek
then strikes a deal: I’ll get your
homes back, if you give me my
home back! But when Shrek and
Farquaad meet, the Lord strikes a
deal of his own: He’ll give the
fairy-tale characters their homes
back, if Shrek rescues Princess
Fiona.
Garber’s cast of 80 stu-
dents ranging in grades K-12 came
prepared to mimic the huge success once performed on Broadway. One of the biggest challenges
will be performing several make
up changes. Fiona has to undergo
“ogrefication” in exactly 12
minutes, a feat that takes Shrek,
played by Steven Axtell, an hour
before the performance.
Along with make up
changes, Garber also rented a huge
dragon puppet that requires three
cast members to operate. The
whole set was amazing and the
costumes were superb. The only
thing that lacked were the major
group scenes. The choreography
seemed to have basic steps. The
male singers lacked a sense of
tone. But at the end of the day it
was still a great musical.
Garber High school’s auditorium was sold out every night.
Erica Close, a sophomore who
played the part of Fiona said, “The
cast is more like a family. I wouldn't trade this experience for anything. Even though were not performing anymore, its not ogre. It’s
never ogre.”

Do You Recall the Hampton Mall?
The Hampton Mall that was
located in Essexville, Michigan has
become a desolate place after the location of a new mall in Bay City, Michigan. As the Bay City Mall grew consumers, shops within the Hampton
Mall began to leave, fading away the
entire area. Today, the Bay City Mall
holds a similar issue, as one store after
another departs.
From Hot Topic to a
bookstore, the Bay City Mall has lost
several stores. Some of these closings
include Old Navy, Hollister, American
Eagle, a video game shop, and a variety of food court restaurants. In a most
recent occurrence both Sears and Target have left the mall due to rent prices

epidemic of its bankruptcy. Some

may need to flock for their consumer
needs to other businesses in Bay City
or to the Fashion Square Mall in Saginaw, but with new chains considering
arrival to support consumer needs,
hope might still be found for the Bay

Despite current patterns,
stores such as Rue 21 and Marshalls
have located themselves within the
Bay City Mall in hopes of obtaining
manageable profit and maintaining
adequate business throughout the mall,
but is this mall heading in the same
direction as the Hampton Mall?

NFL Team in LA? NFL Owners Think So By: Shawn Noonan
The NFL has never been closer to relocating a franchise to Los Angeles. New York Giants owner John
Mara, New England Patriots owner
Robert Kraft and NFL President of
Business Ventures Eric Grubman recently spoke on the matter at the NFL
Annual Meeting in Phoenix, Arizona.
We may see two teams in the NFL
hailing from LA as early as 2016.
“I really believe that in the
next year we’ll have two teams in that
market,” Kraft said on Monday. “I
think there are good plans, we have a
committee that’s working with the
owners, and we have some real good
options.”
Mara also believes one or two
teams will be playing in LA by 2016.
“I think there’s going to be 1-2 teams
playing in Los Angeles next year,”
Mara told reporters on Monday.
Teams rumored to occupy Los
Angeles in the future include the St.
Louis Rams, led by visionary owner
Stan Kroenke, the Oakland Raiders
and the San Diego Chargers. “In my
opinion, the most important thing represented by the recently announced
club-driven initiatives, is that the options available to present a viable L.A.
solution have increased,” NFL President of Business Ventures Eric Grubman told NFL Media in February. “No
project is certain until all the issues
have been worked out, and the owners
have voted to move forward, but two
potentially viable projects pushing
ahead increases the probability that
something could get done.”
Although the move is still in
the preliminary process, one thing is
certain; the chase is on to represent
Los Angeles in the National Football
League.

Wolves Wake Up To Play Ball By: Brandon Thomas
The sun shining and the
sound of bats cracking in the distance can only mean one thing; the
start of baseball season is underway!
According to head baseball coach
Gib Garcia, the team has been working hard since November by partici-
pating in fundamental drills and hitting the weight room to prepare for
the season.
I was able to catch up with
Garcia earlier to discuss about the
team, he said, "It starts with the involvement in the off season, many of
the kids have worked hard during
this time period.”
When asking him, "What
makes this year different from all
of the others that you have
coached?" He replied by saying,
"There are eight kids returning to
the team who have played three or
more years on varsity. And that has
never happened to me."
Garcia commented that the
season preparation has been going
well and the only negative to the
start of the season was the weather
not cooperating with him. After getting a few words with Garcia, I was
lucky enough to talk to senior outfielder Cody Barber.
When I asked Barber on his
expectations for the team this year,
he replied with a bold statement by
saying, "District Championship, Valley Championship, County Championship, and 30+ wins are all in
sight."
With big hopes and dreams
for the wolves this year, I'm excited
to see the outcome if the season. I
would like to see everyone at the
wolves game on April 1st! Go

It’s a new year and it’s
already time for bad news. There
is so much going on in our personal lives that we never stop to
think about others who could be
suffering from cancer at this very
moment. The expected amount
of new cancer cases to be diagnosed will be 1,658,370 for the
year of 2015.
The American Cancer
Society estimates 589,430 of cancer patients will die this year,
that’s 1,600 people a day. The
most common cancer that will be
diagnosed this year is lung cancer. The least diagnosed cancer
that will be diagnosed is melanoma skin cancer.
Cancer is typically found
in people at the age of 55 years
and older. People who don’t take
proper care of themselves are
more likely to have a higher risk
of cancer. People who have poor
eating habits, not moderately
physically active, and smoke are
more likely to be diagnosed with
cancer than a person who is moderately active, healthy, and does
not smoke.
When talking to a recently diagnosed cancer patient,
Elaine says “she never would
have thought that eating candy,
drinking soda, and not being
moderately active would be a big
issue at her age.” Elaine’s husband comments and says “After a
person is diagnosed they will
fight through it or die trying.”
The survival percentage
of a person diagnosed with cancer is 22% chance of living over
five years. Eating healthy, drinking plenty of water, being active,
and a checkup every 6 months
could save someone else's life
and maybe even yours.

Anonymous Hate By: Josh Vascimini
Yik-Yak is an anonymous,
location based app where someone can
write down little messages and share
them with anyone in the local area.
Yik-Yak came out November, 2013
and it’s now a much bigger deal. With
all this added popularity though,
comes with some people that would
like to ruin it for everyone else.
A recent trend has popped up
at some colleges where the students
would use Yik-Yak to gossip and
spread rumors. Of course, since the
app is completely anonymous, there
isn’t a lot anyone can do about it.
Some people have actually went so far
as to support this trend though.
Earlier this year someone
came up with an app straight out of the
movie Mean Girls. This app, which is
called the “Burn Book” was invented
and made just for the purpose of
spreading rumors and nasty comments
about people, places, anything really.
People who join are encouraged to be
nasty and spread hate anonymously.
This kind of thing is not unusual on the internet. Give someone
anonymity and they will take it to
mean they can say literally whatever
they want. But it leaves the question,
what is someone going to do about it?
To fight the negativity of Yikyak, some people have started to
spread nice, cheerful messages with
their own names attached. On the oth-
er side of things, some local communities have decided to come together and
try to get the Burn Book app banned
after a teenage girl attempted suicide
after receiving multiple threats and
insults over the app.

Baymax is the New Teddy Bear By: Hannah Lee
For those who haven’t watched
Big Hero 6, you’re definitely missing out.
This funny, action-packed, adventurous
film is filled with positive role models
and messages the kids will definitely enjoy.
It is about a robotics prodigy
named Hiro Hamada who learns to guide
his talents concerning robotics from his
brother Tadashi Hamada. Tadashi is enrolled into a college that focuses on science and robots. At first Hiro wants nothing to do with it, but when Tadashi shows
Hiro his new creation, Hiro changes his
mind.
Tadashi’s creation is a robot
named Baymax, who is programmed to
provide medical help as well as psychological help to his patients. When Hiro
finds out that there is a fair which can
help him get into the college that Tadashi
in enrolled in, he immediately starts
brainstorming and comes up with a new
technology which can help build buildings, transport people, and many other
amazing things. When the time comes to
present his new technology, he succeeds
in showing how fascinating and helpful it
can truly be.
Then when Hiro and Tadashi
leave the building, a mysterious fire occurs and Robert Callaghan, a famous scientist and professor at the college, is stuck
inside. Tadashi tries to save him from the
fire, but in doing so sacrifices his own
life. Later, Hiro and Baymax discover that
someone has replicated his technology to
use as their own. Throughout the film
Hiro and Baymax and a few other friends
join together as a team to find the myste-
rious man in the mask who stole his
brother’s life and his technology.
Also throughout the film, you
will see how Baymax learns to understand
feelings more while Hiro learns to forgive. There are positive messages in this
film and I would definitely recommend
this to anyone who loves adventurous,
action-filled, animated movies with a
little twist of comedy. The animators did
a wonderful job with the layout and concept of the movie. Baymax is lovable,
huggable, and down right adorable. The
creators at Walt Disney did a fantastic job
of creating something new and fun that
the whole family will enjoy. If you’re
looking for a new movie to watch, I
would recommend watching Big Hero 6.

Cartoon Flashbacks By: Kerissa Chase
Think back to when you were
only ten years old and you would wake up
in the morning excited to go turn on the
television. What was your favorite cartoon? Was it “ChalkZone”? “The Powerpuff Girls”? Or maybe it was “Ed, Edd ‘n’
Eddy”? These three cartoons were major
hits from 1998 to 2009.
“Ed, Edd ‘n’ Eddy” ran from
1999 to 2009 on Cartoon Network. It was
the longest running animated series produced by Cartoon Network and was created by Danny Antonucci. “Ed, Edd ‘n’
Eddy” was a cartoon about three adolescent boys who came up with elaborate
schemes to earn money for jawbreakers.
My favorite episode was when Ed constructed a treehouse and the Krank’s stole
it away from him and Ed had to try and
steal it back. What was your favorite epi-
sode?
“ChalkZone” ran from 2002 to 2008 on
Nickelodeon. It was created by Bill Burnett and Larry Huber and was originally
aired as part of Fred Seibert’s Oh Yeah!
Cartoons in 1998. “ChalkZone” was a
unique cartoon because the main character, Rudy Tabootie, had a magical piece
of chalk. This chalk would take Rudy to a
magical chalk world where everything he
drew came to life. I loved watching this
cartoon because there was always a crazy
adventure involved. Do you remember
ChalkZone?
Awards and a Kids Choice Award. The
Powerpuff Girls was about a scientist who
created three superhero little girls who
fought crime everyday and saved Townsville. Of course if you watched this cartoon you had a favorite hero, right? My
favorite powerpuff girl was Bubbles because I could relate most to her. She was
sweet but knew how to kick butt when it
was needed. “I really loved The Powerpuff Girls because it was filled with sugar
and spice and everything nice.” Monica
Schultz stated, reflecting on the cartoon’s

Nearly 40 year old Central Swim Record Broken By: Ian Kowalski
On March 14th, 2015 Bay City
Central History was made by a group of
young talented swimmers at the MHSAA
State Swim meet.
The 39 year old 200 medley
relay record from 1976 was broken by,
Adam Greenhoe 17 year old senior, Shane
Paul 18 year old senior, Michael Hayward
18 year old senior, and Garrett Wojcik 16
year old junior. The previous record time
was 1:41.72 and was held by Mike Murphy, Mike Schultz, Tom Pederson, and
Mike Perry.
It has been a part of the Bay City
Central swim team for basically its entire
existence and at some point thought to be
unbreakable after several other groups of
Central swimmers had failed. However,
The new record time is a 1:41.31 and the
splits to achieve this time were a 25.74
Backstroke by Michael Hayward, 25.07
Fly by Adam Greenhoe, 27.6 Breast by
Shane Paul, and a 22.9 Freestyle by Garrett Wojcik. The record relay group
earned their spots to the state meet at Valley finals after failing at the Valley prelims to even make the state cut, the time
at finals was a 1:44.5 meaning that just
weeks before they broke the record they
were 3 seconds away from the record.
Dropping this amount of time in such a
small time period is not an easy task and
they each deserve the record for the hard
work put towards it.
This 40 year old record was also
not the only one broken this season for
Bay City Central. The 100 Backstroke
record was taken by Michael Hayward
with a time of 0:54.45 and the previous
record was from 1996 with a time of
0:55.23 swam by Cody Hollies. Hayward
had lowered the record by a whole second
and this record can be expected to stay for
many years after such a feat. So after an
exciting 2015 swim season for Bay City
Central it ended strong and left mark on
the Record boards. “It’s a pretty great
way to end senior year,” said Shane Paul.
