officials plan to shut down the playground that has be around since
1996, in response to liability problems and because of the unsafe
atmosphere it brings. Vandalism
being a main part along with some
biohazards. There are plans underway to build a new modern structure.
This current structure
requires excessive repairs to which
would not be worth it enough to
finish them, instead the Bay City
officials are choosing to build a
new and improved structure. The
two main problems with this structure are the vandalism that has occurred and the chemicals that have
been released into the ground from
the treated and pressurized wood.
Vandalism that has occurred here in
this public park has caused many
problems with the equipment and
safety of the park. Many of the
have been removed or replaced due
to safety reasons. Also many of the
fences have boards that have been
kicked out or chipped causing even
more safety hazards and many parents have commented on this.
“Its absurd the amount of
cuts and bruises my child comes to
me with from running his hand
along a rail and cutting his hand or
banging his knee on a piece of metal that has been pulled out its place
of use.” says a concerned parent.
This parent also stated many of her
friends with children have put in
calls to have some sort of renovation done, seems it has paid off.
through a cut or mouth. Luckily
people who used the playground
were not affected in anyway by
this.
Many students of Bay
City Central High School have
complaints saying “this was their
childhood” and “how can they tear
it down it has done nothing
wrong!” This was a meaningful
place to many and the new structure
will bring new memories to cherish.
The second troubling
thing with this park is the chemicals
that have soaked into the ground.
The way the wood was made for
the park, it involved using copper
arsenate. This can be harmful to

Spring is here and so is
Track Season for BCC and it’s
athletes. But this year for the
Wolves track season it’s a little
bit different from the last year’s
because for the first time in over
a decade Central will host home
track meets!
I know a lot of people
are going to be excited to see the
first home track meet at Central
in ages, especially senior and 3
time All-State thrower Brandi
Thomas. I asked Thomas how
she felt on being able to throw at
a home meet for her school finally in her senior year. She replied
by saying "It feels unreal to have
a home meet. We are going to be
more comfortable and the chances of us performing to our best
ability is high. We are able to
practice in a more safe and realistic environment. Now that we
have a new track we all want to
practice harder and show everyone why we deserved it!"
I know that for me, a
big fan of the sport, that I am
going to be very excited to see a
home track meet at Central High
School. In my 18 years of living
I was never lucky enough to
witness a Track meet at Central.
I know that the team has been
working hard to get ready for
their first home meet in a decade.
I really hope that the
fans and supporters are ready to
see what Central has in store for
them this season. I would like to
see all of the BCC family out at
the first home meet on Tuesday,
April 14th! Go Wolves!

Art-Tastic Fundraiser for Do-Art By: Haila Ackley
Art is a way for people to
express their feelings and show their
talent for doing something they love.
Community program Do-Art, a division of Do-All Inc., strives to provide
art opportunities for everyone, whether
they have a disability or simply cannot
afford supplies. To provide these services, they are having a fundraiser that
shows exactly how the artists create
their work. ArtClash 2015 has artists
compete for prizes.
The catch is, they only have
three hours, and an audience to watch
them create their piece. This will be
held on Saturday April 11th, 2015 at
Graff Chevrolet 3636 East Wilder
Road in Bay City. Artists check in at
3:00 p.m., the competition starts at
4:30 p.m., and the doors are open to
the public at 6:00 p.m. Tickets cost
$25, and can be purchased at Do-All
Inc. at 1400 South Lincoln Street, the
Do-Art Studio Gallery in downtown
Bay City, and at the door.
Each artist has three hours to
complete their art, and when they're
done, the judges place the top ten artists. First place receives $500, second
receives $350, Third receives $300,
and places four through ten all receive
$50. All of the top ten pieces are then
sold at a live auction, and the rest are
sold at a silent auction, with half of the
proceeds of the auctions going to the
artists, and the other half benefitting
Do-Art.

Art. "This is our only fundraiser, the
thing to remember is we have about
500 students coming through each
month to take art classes. It takes a lot
of supplies," says Linda Cassar, who is
the manager of Do-Art. Money is also
being raised by a silent auction of
items donated by local businesses.

The Electric Tones of Tomorrow By: Brooke Monville
Powerman 5000, also known
as PM5K, is an industrial rock band
hailing from Massachusetts. Formed in
1991 by lead vocalist Spider One, they
went on to produce seven albums and
one cover album. Their current lineup
is Spider One on vocals, Gustavo Aueo
on bass, DJ Rattan on drums, Nick
Quijano on guitar, and Richard Jazmin
on guitar.
Spider is the only original
member in the band and is the brother
of musician/filmmaker Rob Zombie.
Powerman can be compared to Rob
Zombie but their sound is unique and
doesn't follow the metal and horror
influences that Zombie has. Many of
their songs have been featured in various video games and movies, allowing
the band to gain some recognition
through other means rather than on the
radio or through the internet. Throughout the years, Powerman has had multiple lineup changes.
Otherside of Nowhere", Powerman
5000 will continue their reign of electronic terror and hard rock to the end
of the world.
Overall, the band does not
disappoint when it comes to their music. Each album has its own differences
and variety in songs while every band
member contributes to the sound, no
matter how small their part is. The
electronic metal with catchy lyrics and
rhythmic guitars are anything but
bland.
Spider's voice is smooth with
a rough edge and alongside the
charged guitars, mellow bass, and
heavy drums, everything fits in place
to form an empowering band. From the
adrenaline filled "You're Gonna Love
It, If You Like It Or Not" to the soft
relaxing tones of "Somewhere on the

Phantom of the Opera, the traveling Broadway show, made its way to
Michigan States Wharton Center on
April 1st. It was truly amazing. Everything about the show seemed to be perfect. The singing was superb and the
dancing was spot on and perfect.
Phantom of the Opera begins
when an opera ghost terrorizes the cast
and crew of the French Opera House all
the while tutoring a chorus girl named
Christine. He finally drives the lead
soprano crazy so she and her friend
leave. Christine is able to sing lead one
night but the soprano doesn't want her
show stolen so she comes back. The
ghost demands they keep giving his
student lead roles.
Meanwhile, his pupil falls in
love with her childhood friend Vicomte
de Chagny, but the Phantom is in love
with Christine, his student. The Phantom then kidnaps Christine and takes
her to his lair deep under the opera
house. The most exciting part apart
from the show and in spite of being a
Broadway musical production was the
fact that Bay City Central Alumni Katie
Travis was the lead actress.
Cameron Bash, a sophomore at
Garber High School, went to see the
production, “It was awesome. I never
thought I would be able to see a Broadway production of Phantom of the
Opera.” exclaimed Bash.
“My favorite part was when the
chandelier fell to the floor. I wasn’t expecting it at all.” Travis is now the second person from Bay City Central to
make it on Broadway most recently.
Ryan Vandenboom being the second
person to make it on Broadway is currently rehearsing for “Something Rotten” which is to soon be released on
Broadway.
Throwback to ‘96 By: Kerissa Chase

The world changes every day
and every year new songs come out,
more movies are created, and crazy
world events occur. This week in 1996
the world was a bit different than it is
today.
The population was only 5.76
billion people. Around the world new
events were taking place. France
agreed to end nuclear testing, Britain
was surprisingly alarmed by an outbreak of ‘Mad Cow’ disease, and Israel elected Benjamin Netanyahu as
their prime minister. In 1996, William
J. Clinton was president of the United
States and Albert Gore Jr. was Vice
President. Clinton approved resumption of many government operations
and he blocked ban on late term abortions.
Entertainment has always
been a popular topic. Janet Jackson
became the highest paid musician in
history because she signed an eighty
million dollar deal with Virgin Records. The rapper Tupac Shakur was
shot four times in a drive-by shooting.
He died at the age of twenty-five, only
six days later.
New movies that came out
that year were “The English Patient”,
“Fargo” and “Shine”.
Throughout the years science
has been a major importance to the
world. Back in 1996, scientists were
analyzing a Martian meteorite claim
that would have possible provided
evidence of existing ancient life on
Mars. Dr. Ian Wilmut and his team
had used adult cells to create the
world’s first cloned sheep. It was born
in July of 1996 and her name was Dolly.
The world is constantly
changing around us. What do you remember from 1996 that is different
today?

A Better Bendable Battery By: Collin Walker
Batteries used in today’s
electronics are lithium ion batteries.
A new battery has been developed,
“consisting of aluminum for one electrode, graphite foam for the other
electrode, and a special salt solution,
all in a special pouch.(bbc.com)”
This new battery charges in a
minute or less, is very durable, and
won’t catch fire.
This battery can go through
more than 7,500 cycles without the
battery losing capacity. The experiment has done better than other aluminum batteries in the past. It’s two
volt output sets it above past aluminum battery experiments, but it is still
behind the output of lithium ion batteries.
Jenna VanAllen, a senior,
says, "It would save a lot of time, you
wouldn't have to wait for your phone
or computer to charge. This would be
really cool if this could be adapted
for cars, and we would probably save
a lot of electricity."
Rebekah Galindo, a junior,
on the other hand says, "People
would be more connected to their
phones and such even more than they
are now. We would have people who
are on their phone every moment
they are awake."

Since this is an experiment,
there isn't a lot of information on the
how and why it works, but it would
definitely change the world.
Hoverboards: The Ride of the Future By: Josh Vascimini
Hendo recently made a new
market with remarkable technological
advances to normal boards and
things. Instead of using wheels you
ride directly on the air. A completed
kickstarter means that the team can
continue working on their futuristic
idea: the idea of riding around without friction or wheels.
The team more than doubled
their kickstarter goal of 250 thousand, proving that the world and the
people in it are more than ready for
such an invention. The hoverboard
uses magnetics against a special kind
of material to float an inch above the
ground.
Since the project went live,
many major magazines and notable
figures have been interested in the
production. The Verge and The New
York Times both covered the hovercraft. Professional skateboarder Tony
Hawk actually went and gave it a test
drive, although he isn’t endorsing the
board, he appeared to have been having a good time on the hover ramp.
Although currently it is a
little limited in its range and where it
can go, the team has grand ideas for
future adaptations to allow the board
to go more places.

You’re Toast By: Angela Nelson
get it. Tanning or getting sunburnt are
the skins way of protecting itself from
extremely harmful UV rays.
Tanning in a bed is the same as
putting a piece of bread in a toaster. A
tanning bed has been added to the list of
the most dangerous forms of cancercausing radiation. People who use a
tanning bed before the age of 30 increase their risk of the most deadly skin
cancer, Melanoma by 75 percent. Melanoma is not the only skin cancer that is
likely to develop. Squamous cell and
basal cell skin cancer are just as harmful.

Spring Break is over and warm
weather is approaching fast and you
want a golden glow. Tans in either a bed

Jordan Wasoski, a skin cancer
patient says “It’s a disease that is incurable, Emotionally your attitude has to be
strong and although having skin cancer
is meant to bring you down. You keep
on fighting like a warrior.”
Tanning in the scorching sun is
just as dangerous if not worse than baking in a bed. The UV rays that the sun
gives off accelerates the signs of premature aging, which includes wrinkles,
skin cancer, and eye damage. UVA and
UVB radiation triggers when the sun
strikes the skin and this begins a three
stage sequence of protective reactions
resulting in darkening of the skin.
It is better to fake it, then bake
it. Numerous lotions and sprays can help
give you a natural glow, so you don’t
feel the need to harm your body’s largest organ for a sun kissed glow. Take
care of your skin and be aware of UV
rays.
Running with a Tumor By: Madison Rapcka
In March 2014, Jennifer Krevinghaus, mother of four, was diagnosed with
a brain tumor after experiencing nausea and
headaches. The doctors at Covenant
Healthcare in Saginaw discovered the tumor.
“It was so swelled up it was pushing on parts
of my brain. It had basically pushed parts of
my brain out of the way.” said Krevinghaus
in January.
At Henry Ford Hospital in Detroit,
the doctors diagnosed her brain tumor as an
anaplastic astrocytoma. Krevinghaus was
faced with chemotherapy pills and radiation.
In June, she eventually seeked surgical treatment to remove the tumor at MD Anderson
Cancer Center in Houston, Texas. The surgery lasted nine hours and after she recovered
from surgery, she worked hard to get her life
back. Krevinghaus is slowly getting back to
work for Bay Arenac ISD as a member of the
instructional support staff.
Dealing with her brain tumor,
Krevinghaus ran in the St. Patrick’s Day 5k
race on March 15th along with 5,000 other
runners. “As long as I kept up on the training,
I was okay. If I would slack off for a week, it
would be hard to get into the swing of things.
When I started running outside, I started hurting in places I didn’t know could hurt.” said
Krevinghaus. Twenty family members and
friends showed up at the starting line to
run, walk, and cheer her on. Running alongside her in the race was her husband, Allen
Krevinghaus and family friend, John Rychwa.
But at the same time, I keep telling myself I
don’t have any of the symptoms I had when I
had the tumor. I’m anxiously awaiting the trip
to Texas so they can confirm that for me.” she
said. Krevinghaus isn’t done running either.
She says she hopes to be with her family this
summer for the Pinconning Cheesetown Festival. Going to Pinconnings Cheesetown Festival was a family tradition for years until her
illness put it on hold.
Rychwa is one of Krevinghaus
biggest supporters.Rychwa is the founder of
the Megan Mae foundation. The foundation
was named after his daughter, who succumbed to brain cancer. Rychwa and his wife
Donna used the money to help the Krevinghaus family go to Disney World in late
November.
Krevinghaus is heading back down
to Texas this month to have another MRI.
“I’m really hoping that they have good news
for me but I’m nervous to get too confident.

Monkey Business in Detroit Causes Remake to Classic Movie By: Jacob Sova
Look up! It’s a bird! A plane!
A massive meteor heading for Earth!
No, it is a 100,000 ft ape climbing the
Empire State building!
This is no marvel/DC comic
book superhero, but a legendary building climber coming to Detroit, Michigan for the upcoming production of
Kong: Skull Island. This movie stars
the gigantic ape, new Oscar nominee
J.K. Simmons, and will be directed by
Jordan Vogt-Roberts.
According to Simmons, “The
film will be set partly in the Detroit of
1971”. It is rumored that Michael Keaton and Tom Hiddleston will be involved in the movie.
This mega action/adventure
story centers around the origins of
King Kong. In fact, it was initially
thought that the 1971 Detroit was going to be a framing device that ties in
with the 1933 movie King Kong, but
this movie will revamp the myth of
King Kong. Simmons states that, “In
the spirit of its worldwide blockbuster
Godzilla, Legendary Pictures presents
a bold new take on the mythos of another iconic beast with Kong: Skull
Island, which stars Tom Hiddleston.”
Directed by Jordan VogtRoberts and written by John Gatins
and Max Borenstein, Kong: Skull Island will fully immerse audiences in
the mysterious and dangerous home of
the king of the apes as a team of explorers ventures deep inside the
treacherous, primordial island. Thom-
as Tull and Jon Jashni will produce
and Alex Garcia will executive produce.
Release date on this movie is
March 10, 2017 and will be shown in
3D and IMAX 3D by Universal Pictures. You’ll be going bananas to see
this epic remake.

Insurgent - One Choice Can Destroy You By: Emily Burzynski
A must see film of 2015, Insurgent is based off the New York Times
best-selling Divergent trilogy. The movie starts with heroine Tris (Shailene
Woodley) and Four (Theo James) her
boyfriend, on the run from Jeanine
(Kate Winslet) and the rest of the power
hungry Erudites. They must find out
what Tris' family sacrificed their lives to
protect and the Erudites will do anything to stop them. They search for allies and answers in the ruins of Chicago.
Side by side, Tris and Four face one
seemingly impossible challenge after
another. Tris also battles with what she
has done to survive as they unravel the
secrets of the past and ultimately the
future of their world.
“I can’t let anyone else die
because of me.” -Tris Prior.
This movie is just as good as
the first one. The emotions that the actors show as things unravel are very
realistic. Woodley is phenomenal with
the way she portrays Tris, showing what
it’s like to be strong and not give up
even when things become tough. James
also makes you love Four because he’s
what many girls wish for guys to be
like, especially the love he shares with
Tris is certainly envious.
The action-packed scenes certainly keep you engrossed in the film.
Seeing the different world portrayed on
the screen really is a sight to see. A rec-
ommendation of this film is highly anticipated, it really is as great as the cover looks.

Mr. Fitch By: Ian Kowalski
Mr. Fitch is Bay City Central's A.P Chemistry teacher, he has
been teaching for 24 years at Central
and has also taught classes and Delta
Community College.
Fitch is also Bilingual, he
learned how to speak spanish in his
mid 20’s, and wielding this intelligence with his knowledge of chemistry, who knows what he is capable of.
Some may argue that Fitch is
more of a legend than a man, growing
up in Buena Vista he attended their
public high school and later moved
onto Saginaw Valley State University
where he majored in Chemistry.
Fitch is also a big fan of 80’s
music which comes from his time as a
DJ, and in his classroom while students are in the lab you can be sure to
hear the electric beats and synths of
that time pumping out from his computer on his pandora radio station. Although if its not 80’s music playing, it
will most likely be Taylor Swift playing, the man loves her music.
While in his early 20’s he
helped pay for college and other living
expenses by DJ’ing. His DJ stunt lasted from the early 80’s to the mid 80’s,
but he has never pursued this career
again after retiring. “Although I could
bring it back if I wanted to” said Fitch
about his DJ’ing status.
Fitch also has a nickname Mr.
Flitch given by one of his pupils Noah
Pavlawk. However, after this school
year Mr. Fitch plans on retiring from
his teaching career, this saddens me to
hear but I’m sure he will continue his
life being awesome somewhere else.

Parker Majeske is a Senior at
Bay City Central. Majeske is 18 years
old and lives with her dad and two
brothers. Her parents are separated and
on her mother's side, she has 2 more
brothers and 3 sisters.
Majeske is the student council’s senior vice president this school
year. She is on the Varsity Soccer
team and is excited for their upcoming
season, especially after starting it off
with a tie against Nouvel this past
week. Majeske started her high school
career off as a wolf at Bay City Central, but then switched to Midland
Dow. Last year she transferred back to
Bay City Central, where she is happy
to be graduating from.
Asides from soccer, Majeske
used to be on the competitive cheer
team but stopped her senior year to
focus on her studies and soccer. With
less than 50 days left of the school
year, she is looking to make the most
of her last days as a Central Wolf.
Majeske is also excited for
her senior prom coming up in less than
two weeks. Majeske currently co-ops
at the Bay Area Family YMCA. She
has worked there for a little over a
year and enjoys her job and coworkers. “Noah Pavlawk has got to be
my most favorite co-worker ever!”
said Majeske when asked about her

Saying Yes to the Promposing! By: Lauren Bedell
The most exciting part for
everybody else is going on social
media sites and seeing who has the
cutest promposal, and how many
likes their cheesy, cute pictures get.
The excitement of who is asking
who pretty much fills the minds of
all the teenage girls who can’t focus
on anything other than the dance,
especially school related things.
Pictured: Grant Miller and Bre Ramos
As prom season approaches
faster than ever this year, it seems to
be the most exciting time for girls
and the most dreaded for the boys.
Promposals consist of the cute, expensive, embarrassing, and ridiculous proposals the boys put together
to ask their date to prom.
When talking to the boys
who are the ones doing the Promposing, their responses are bit different
than the girls, but nothing you
wouldn’t expect to hear from a highschool boy. Senior Grant Miller explains his promposal process as a
“nerve racking experience.” Miller
said it took him a whole week of
planning before he finally figured
out how to ask Brehanna Ramos to
be his prom date. Miller’s promposal
consisted of filling up Brehanna’s
first hour with balloons and a cute
poem leading up to the big question.
“You feel happy and relieved once
it’s all over,” Miller says. Talking to
more than a few boys, their respons-
Page 8
es all seem to match up. Some, less
enthusiastic about it than others.
Being the one promposed to,
the reactions are a little different
from the girls. Senior Madeline Martin was in total shock she says, after
being promposed to by Ryan Vincent
during a dress rehearsal for the
spring musical. Vincent created his
own prom rendition of Michael
Buble’s “Havent Met You Yet.” He
performed his song to her surprisingly in the middle of practice in front
of the 60 some cast. Martin says she
was “so surprised and in awe” when
she realized he wasn’t just practicing
his piano skills.
There’s no doubt that
promposals are what sparks the excitement for prom, but of course the
dance is the ultimate goal and
promposed to or not, it’s an experience everybody should be able to
have at their time in high school.
Especially for the seniors, prom is to
most people one of the most looked
forward things to end the final year

Downtown Bay City is a

Nails: Tips on the Perfect Looks By: Monica Schultz
There’s nothing wrong with
the elegance of French white tip nails,
but what if you want a little more
flair? Where do you go? What are the
best places? Can I get a similar look
on my own? Look no further, for these
questions will be answered shortly.
If you’re looking for nice
white tips, the nail salon located closest to JC Penny’s in the Bay City Mall
gives great results, but outspoken personality traits may be needed to get the
best out of your salon experience. On
another note, Lee Spa Nails, located in
Saginaw, gives foot massages to those
looking for a pampered pedicure. Certain aspects of getting your nails done
professionally should be noted, as you
may not always be reimbursed if complications occur. Gel nails also last up
to two weeks but if left on for a long
duration, it may leave a bubbling of
growing nails to a ratio of indented old
nails underneath the fake nails.
If you like the idea of a more
professional look, but can’t afford the
hassle of going to a nail salon, an at
home alternative is available. Using
fast drying nail polishes can be quite
useful, but to create designs, I suggest
using Sinful Colors nail polishes. To
create certain looks such as a manicure, it is very effective to use thinner
brushes while turning your finger rather than the brush, especially when
not using your dominant hand. Various
dotting tools or toothpicks/bobby pins
can also help create a lasting effect.
Overall it is vital to use fast drying
clear coats (base and top) to protect
natural nails as well as adding shine to
a sealed design.
Still struggling on deciding
between which two methods to choose
from? Don’t stress! When asked about
her preference between fake and painted nails, Christine Siemonsma, a frequent nail advocate, had this to say, “I
can’t really choose between the two,
they’re both pretty great!”

Spring is Here, Time for Sports! By: Jenna Richard
Bay City Central sports are off
to a running start this spring. With the
weather some-what cooperating, most of
the sports teams matches, meets, and
games are starting right on schedule.
The Central Varsity Baseball
team started their season over spring
break with a double header against Valley
Lutheran High School. They came up
with both of the wins and a 2-0 start to
their season. “No one really was a standout player during the games.” said Calyb
Shaw, 3rd baseman/Shortstop for the Varsity Baseball team. They have a home
tournament this weekend at MacGregor
Elementary School.
The Girls Varsity Tennis started
their season off on April 7 against Bay
City John Glenn. They took the match
with a 7-1 win. Jenny Wu, Nikki Hughes,
and others took wins in their singles
matches. Katelyn Kopec and Laura Poirier took a win in doubles as well as many
others. Their next match is at home in
Carroll Park on April 13 against Essexville Garber.
The Varsity Girls Soccer team
also began their season on April 7 against
Saginaw Nouvel at home. They tied 1-1
with a goal by Faith Nesbitt. Audrie Adams, Central Varsity Goalie, started the
season off with 16 saves. They have their
annual Bay County Tournament at Bay
City Western on April 11 against West-
ern, Garber, John Glenn, and Pinconning.
The Girls Softball team started
their season on April 9 at home at MacGregor Elementary School against Mt.
Pleasant High School at 4:00 after traveling to Florida this past spring break for
training.
Lacrosse began their season on
April 7 against Midland at home. They
lost 22-0. Their next game is April 9
against Bay City Western at Western.
Both the girls and boys track teams first
meet was canceled on April 9 due to the
weather. Boys Varsity Golf begins season
on April 17 at the Ogemaw Height Invitational.

League of Legends is an online free
to play multiplayer online battle arena
(MOBA) game that has grown exponentially
in popularity within the last two years. This
game came out in late 2009 and has gotten
bigger with every new season. As of right
now, League is in its 5th season and is still
going strong.
The game is sort of like a huge
game of capture the flag. It’s a 5 on 5 setting,
There are over 100 champions to
choose from, all having a certain position to
go. The champions also have certain items
that go good with them. You buy these items
with gold which you can get by killing minions, champions, or destroying turrets.
There are objectives such as turrets,
Dragon, and The Baron Nashor. The first
team to destroy the other team’s nexus wins. I
had the chance to interview Jacob Gripentrog,
who is a sophomore at Bay City Central, and
asked what he thought about League of Leg-
ends. He said, “I’ve been playing League for
about a year now, and it’s probably my favorite game to play because of it’s unique style.”
The games take about 45 minutes from start
to finish and there are ranks that determine
how good you are.
The ranks go bronze, silver, gold,
platinum, diamond, master, and challenger. If
you are good enough, you could even go pro
and play professional competitive play on a
team. There are four main regions in competitive play, those being North America, Europe,
China, and Korea. These teams play in their
respective divisions and try to get a spot in
worlds at the end of the season, which is in
the Fall, where they play teams in the other
regions. The winner of worlds wins about one
million dollars. League is considered an E
sport and shows no signs of letting up in its
popularity.
Indiana’s Newest Law Creates Uproar By: Arianna Whisman
Indiana’s Religious Freedom
Restoration Act has be signed into last
week by Republican Governor Mike
Pence. On March 31, Pence said there
has “been misunderstanding and confusion, and mis-characterization of this
law.” The law has backfired as it could
lead to discrimination against the LGBT
community. Businesses such as Apple
and Angie’s List have brought up harsh
criticism, while the NCAA, which hosted the men’s college final four in Indianapolis, considered switching the basketball court venues for the final competition.
To be clear, there’s no real
mystery about the purpose of the Religious Freedom Restoration Act. The goal
is to give business owners a stronger
legal defense if they refuse to serve the
LGBT customers due to their religion.
A local pizza shop called Memories Pizza located near Indianapolis
won’t cater to gays and admit that they
are happy with the new law. “If a couple
was to come to me and they wanted us to
provide pizzas for their wedding. we
would say no. We are a Christian establishment,” said Crystal O’Connor, the co
-owner of the Pizza Shop
O’Connor’s father agrees with
her, “I agree with the bill. That’s a lifestyle that you choose. I choose to be
heterosexual, they choose to be homosexual. Why should I be beat over the
head because they choose that lifestyle.”
Memories Pizza went out of
business a day after the interviews, due
to backlash of angry community mem-
bers. After the business closed, a group
of people who coincided with O’Connor
raised over $800k for her in sympathy.
Famous singer Rihanna called
out Indiana Law-Makers during a performance in the state capital. Rihanna asked
the crowd, “Who’s feeling these new
bull***t laws they’re trying to pass
around here?” Her rant continued and
finished with her song “Live Your Life”.
Other celebrities such as Perez
Hilton, Cher, Seth MacFarlane, Miley
Cyrus, Stephen King, and Ellen DeGeneres have also voice their outrage via
twitter. Avid religious community and
legislation members have backer Pence
up while everyone else hasn’t. Time will
only tell if this law lasts or not.
