Every year, I have gone to multiple tournaments with fellow club members. This year, I have been in three tournaments so far, and I have had a fun time participating in the tournaments with my friends. It is very fun playing a game that makes you smarter, and that exercises your brain. Each year, our school has done very good in tournaments, and we have very good players. These tournaments are all very fun, and all the players have had a good time playing chess. The biggest tournament of the year is the Utah State Chess Tournament for Elementary Schools held each March. Beacon Heights had 27 players at this tournament and they placed 7th out of 100 schools. When I started on the team, we were at 20th. That’s a big change! Each player plays six rounds, and after the round, each person goes back to the Union Ballroom until the next round begins. After each round, I throw a football with friends, play practice games, and my favourite, and eat food! I look forward to these fun tournaments each year! Thanks to Tina Yang and Coach Harrison for doing a great job with the chess club! I was always fascinated by chess, and I had the opportunity to go to the State Championship for the past couple of years. Beacon Heights Elementary chess club prepared me well enough to be competent, and to excel in chess. The 2015 Elementary State Championship was well attended with around 500 children in all grades combined and along with their parents it was a gala!! Though, at times a bit chaotic, it was lot of fun! 27 children from Beacon Heights attended the tournament. All of them did great, with trophies and medals, and winning a 7th place team trophy for Beacon Heights! Thanks to our coaches, Harrison, Jacinda, Tina and other parent volunteers. I feel so proud to be a part of such an amazing chess club. I like chess as it is fun, and it teaches me patience and concentration. My first chess tournament was Newman Open Elementary and I won a medal, which I was proud of. It taught me the tricks of the trade. It is a whole world of difference between the chess club games and the tournaments. There, the opponents are more competitive and strong. Last Championship I won 3rd place with 5 out of 6 games. This year I ended up at 7th place with 4.5 points. The lesson is, not all games you can win! Some you lose, some you win! But, as in anything else you do, the key to success is practice, practice, and practice! Part time evening custodial position at Beacon Heights! We now have a sweeper position open on our custodial crew at Beacon Heights. This is an evening 4 hour position, schooldays, $7.50 an hour. Please contact me with any questions. Thanks!
