Fabrics and colors vary u Cut 49 background pieces 10" x 12". One all over the world. Try to find special bits and yard of 40" fabric will yield 12 blocks. When the pieces that really relate to a given place or sym- appliqué is complete, trim the blocks to 8" x 10". bol. Remember to consider contrast and texture when choosing fabrics. Sashing For the sample quilt, which is 79" x 93", you will need (this is generous yardage): u Cut 56 pieces 2" x 8". u Cut 56 pieces 2" x 10". Appliqué: small scraps for each block. These can come from your stash or you can enjoy shopping for fat eighths. Background: 4¹⁄₂ yards Cornerstones u Cut 64 pieces 2" x 2". Sashing and outer border: 3 yards Cornerstones and inner border: Note: It is best to measure the width and 1¹⁄₃ yards Backing: 5¹⁄₂ yards length of the completed quilt top through the Binding: 1¹⁄₈ yards (bias cut binding) center and then cut borders. If you prefer to cut borders in advance, these measurements worked for me. Note: Look closely at the sample quilt blocks to see how I used fabric to really bring out certain features. For example, the “argyle” sock on Scotland Sue is a strip of plaid fabric. To make Sherlock Sue’s magnifier look like glass, I used netting instead of fabric. Inner Border u Cut 2 pieces 1¹⁄₄" x 66¹⁄₂" for the top and bottom borders. u Cut 2 pieces 1¹⁄₄" x 79" for the side borders. Outer Border u Cut 2 pieces 7" x 79¹⁄₂" for the top and bottom borders. u Cut 2 pieces 7" x 80¹⁄₂" for the side borders.
