BELFAST ROYAL ACADEMY Full-time Temporary (Maternity Leave) Teacher of Biology and Health and Social Care General Information The Belfast Royal Academy was founded in 1785 and is the oldest school in the city. Originally situated near St. Anne’s Cathedral in what is now Academy Street, it was transferred to the Cliftonville Road in 1880, when the present building was erected. For more than a century the school was named Belfast Academy. In 1888 Queen Victoria granted permission for the school to style itself the Belfast Royal Academy. Belfast Royal Academy is a voluntary grammar school of some 1400 pupils, with a further 130 pupils in the preparatory department. Its management is vested in a Board of Governors on which parents and teachers are represented, along with Governors elected by Members of the Academy and nominees of the Minister of Education. Seven members of staff, including the Head of Department, are responsible for the teaching of Biology throughout the school and in addition, some members of staff help in the delivery of a number of other subjects at the Academy. Key stage 3 pupils are allocated 2 periods of Biology per fortnight (each period is 1 hour). At GCSE, pupils follow the CCEA specification for Higher Tier Biology and at AS/A2 the CCEA Biology specification is also followed. Biology is taught in the modern purpose-built Bruce building, which houses five specialist laboratories and one dry laboratory. Each lab is equipped with the latest computing, dataprojection and audio-visual technology. Health and Social Care is a new subject at Advanced Level with first teaching from September 2015. A willingness to contribute to the extra-curricular life of the school is essential. Late applications will not be accepted. app/Biology and Social March 2015 GI BELFAST ROYAL ACADEMY TEMPORARY (MATERNITY LEAVE) FULL-TIME TEACHER OF BIOLOGY AND HEALTH AND SOCIAL CARE (1st September 2015 – 30th May 2016) JOB DESCRIPTION Summary of main aspects of the role: • To teach Health and Social Care at AS level • To teach Biology at KS3 and, if required, at GCSE level • To teach, if required, Chemistry at GCSE level and Physics at KS3 • To carry out the role of Class Tutor • To maintain high levels of discipline • To work with other members of the Biology department to develop the schemes of work and to ensure that the curricula for Biology and Health and Social Care are delivered. • To carry out such administrative and other tasks within the Biology department as are considered appropriate by the Head of Department or the Headmaster. PERSONNEL SPECIFICATION Essential 1.1 A 1st or Upper 2nd Class Honours Degree in Biology or a related subject. 1.2 Recognition as a qualified teacher by the General Teaching Council (NI) or an equivalent qualification pending as part of a Post-Graduate Certificate in Education. 1.3. Experience teaching science to GCSE. 1.4. Evidence of a high standard in written communication. 1.5 Evidence of ability to contribute to the extra-curricular life of the school. 1.6 Energy, enthusiasm and the ability to cope effectively with the demands of the post. Desirable 2.1 A 1st class Honours Degree in Biology or a related subject. 2.2 Experience teaching Health and Social Care to Advanced Level. 2.3 Experience teaching Biology and/or Chemistry to GCSE.
