Bellevue Presbyterian Church BELLEVUE TIDINGS Bellevue is a family of faith who lifts up the name of Jesus Christ in Worship, teaches the Truth of Christ to those who follow Him, and shows the Way to Christ to those who do not know Him, all for the glory of God. Purpose Statement of Bellevue Presbyterian Church Volume XLVIII, Issue 5 www.BellevueEPC.org A Journey to the Potter’s House Saturday June 20th, 6:30 p.m. Bellevue is excited that Michael Ferris’s A Journey to the Potter's House is coming back in June. For those of you who saw this very moving presentation last fall, you left that night thinking: "Wow, I wish I had invited ___________.” Well this is your opportunity! People who saw the program that night will tell you that this is a WONDERFUL opportunity to invite friends, family, neighbors and co-workers to join you here at Bellevue, Saturday night, June 20th at 6:30 p.m. Long time Christians, new believers, and unsaved friends will all come away from this presentation with a clearer understanding of God and His relationship with us. A Journey to the Potter’s House is a mesmerizing, hands-on demonstration of how a potter works with his clay to form it into a beautiful and useful vessel. But it’s also an illuminating look into God's relationship with us. Yes, under God's strong hand, and despite our past, God works to make us into a vessel of honor, useful for His purpose. And if all of that isn’t enough to bring you, your family, and friends out to see the program – we will be holding an Ice Cream Social afterwards! So mark your calendars and invite everyone you know for a memorable and life changing evening! See page 4 for Vacation Bible School News! Please invite your friends or family members with little ones! Looking forward to a fun filled summer!! June 4th June 18th July 2nd July 16th August 6th August 20th September 3rd William S. Davies, Jr. You will find elsewhere in this newsletter an article concerning a special movie night to be held at Bellevue August 14th at 7:00 p.m. You are invited to gather at Bellevue that night to view the newly released documentary, Logic on Fire, on the life and ministry of D. Martyn Lloyd-Jones. As we are reminded in the article Lloyd-Jones, the famous Welsh preacher, is “considered by many to be the greatest preacher of the 20th century.” One of the first books on preaching that I read was by Dr. Lloyd Jones, Preaching and Preacher. I believed God used this book at a very crucial time in my life to help me discern if God was calling me into the preaching ministry. I trust I have been faithful to that calling and I only know that there are few things in life that I enjoy doing as much as sharing God’s Word with God’s people. I cannot thank you enough for the high and holy privilege you allow me each Sunday as I stand before you. In July, 1959 Martyn Lloyd-Jones and his wife Bethan were on vacation in Wales. They attended a little chapel for a Sunday morning service and Lloyd-Jones asked them, "Would you like me to give a word this morning?" The people hesitated because they knew he was on vacation and they didn't want to presume on his energy, but his wife said, "Let him, preaching is his life." It was a true statement. In the preface to his book, Preaching and Preachers, he said, "Preaching has been my life's work ... to me the work of preaching is the highest and the greatest and the most glorious calling to which anyone can ever be called. Many called Lloyd-Jones the last of the Calvinistic Methodist (this is the roots of my home church) preachers because he combined Calvin's love for truth and sound reformed doctrine with the fire and passion of the eighteenth-century Methodist revival. For thirty years he preached from the pulpit at Westminster Chapel in London. Usually that meant three different sermons each weekend, Friday evening, and Sunday morning and evening. At the end of his career he remarked, "I can say quite honestly that I would not cross the road to listen to myself preaching." Once again I find myself in agreement with this wonderful Welsh preacher. I have been blessed during the past two years to share the pulpit ministry of Bellevue Church with Pastor JT. As I treasure it a high and holy calling to preach I also treasure being fed from the Word of God by my friend and colleague in ministry, JT. I hope you will join us on August 16th for our Bellevue Movie Night! The 35th General Assembly Meeting of the Evangelical Presbyterian Church will meet June 23 – 27, 2015 at First Presbyterian Church of Orlando, FL. Serving as commissioners from Bellevue will be, RE Roland Berthoud, RE Mary Ann Berthoud, RE Phil Castor, and TE JT Holderman. Please pray for your brothers and sisters as they travel to Florida and serve in this important role in the life of our denomination. HOTDOGS AND A SOFTBALL GAME JUNE 1ST, 6:00 p.m. Monday evening, June 1st, the Bellevue team will have a game at 6:30 p.m. and they will play the team from St. John’s Church. However, you will want to get to the ball field by 6:00 p.m. to enjoy some hot dogs and fellowship prior to the game beginning. You are asked to bring a dessert to share. Maybe we could even arrange to get the team members to sign autographs or have pictures taken with you?! Save this date and we will see you at the ballgame on Monday evening, June 1st at 6:00 p.m.!! To help us plan on how many hot dogs there is a signup sheet at the Welcome Center if you already know you will be there! STUDENT LOAN FUND The Student Loan Committee is once again receiving applications for Student Loans for the 2015-2016 school year. Interest free loans are available for all members of Bellevue and their children. Application forms and guidelines are available from the church office. Please have your completed forms returned by June 30, 2015. 2 THE BOARD OF DEACONS’ INVITE YOU TO JOIN THE COLLEGE STUDENTS AND MILITARY PERSONNEL ADOPTION Sunday, June 28th marks the beginning of the sign-up period for our third annual "adoption" program for college students and military personnel. This year will be a little different in that we will not be using the apple tree with students' names attached for your selection. Instead, we are asking those of you who feel led to adopt a student or member of the military to sign up on the sheet in Friendship Hall. In the following weeks, you will be matched with your adoptee and receive a bookmark introducing him or her. Please prayerfully consider this important step as a crucial part of our ministry at Bellevue. We ask you to pray for your new student, keep in touch with them throughout the school year, send him/her cards, a small gift perhaps, so they would feel loved and not forgotten by the Bellevue family. We thank God for you adopting parents, asking His blessings on you. Dollar-A Day Unreached People Groups - Church Planting Project We have an incredible opportunity to reach people and bring them new life in Christ. Glad Tidings India has had quite the impact through a three year program of ministry in unreached people groups in India. The three year strategy is as follows: year one— Bible content literacy classes (450 adults), year two— 10 church planters trained and equipped (each planter visits 1,000 homes with the Gospel), and year three is both a Bible content literacy class and 1,000 children attending Vacation Bible School. The number of people who have come to know Jesus through this three year cycle, on average, has been 1,600 decisions for Christ, per unreached people group! The Lord is blessing this three year program. We are committing to join together as a church to fund a three year program among the Nanded Tribal unreached people group in Maharashtra, India. If 88 of us gave $1 a day for one year, the entire three year program would be funded. Given the average decisions for Christ that come out of just giving a dollar a day, it would be silly not to participate. Please join us this coming year on mission as we invest in lives in India, for those who have never heard the name of Jesus that they might glorify and enjoy Him forever. RESURRECTION BROOKLYN Mission Trip June 11-14, 2015 On June 11-14 a group will travel to the Sheepshead Bay neighborhood of the Brooklyn borough of New York. Our sister church, Resurrection Brooklyn EPC, has been heavily invested in serving those hit hard by Hurricane Sandy a few years ago. We joined them last year with a group, working on reclaiming and renovating homes devastated by flooding. We went as the hands and feet of Christ to show the homeowners and surrounding neighborhood that our values were different. Because of the Gospel, the free and gracious love of Christ for us, we went to show the love of Christ to them. This year we take a group to continue the task of reaching out to those in Sheepshead Bay. My plea to you who read this today: Pray for the team. Pray that God would strengthen them to do the work with joy and gladness. Pray that the families would see the love of Christ for them in how the team works. Pray that through the team, someone would come to faith, that a lost person would be found. Please pray. And if you haven’t signed up yet and would like to go, please sign up at the Welcome Center or speak with Pastor JT ([email protected]). FACTORY NEWS It is hard to believe that the school year has ended as well as our meals. We have no plans on serving over the summer. As usual it was an exciting time each serving 60 to 75 youth each 4th Thursday of each month. The youth are kind, considerate, full of laughter, and never fail to say ”thank you .” They appreciate your generosity in the meals you provide and your continued prayers. SAVE THE DATE: If you find yourself looking for something to do on July 11, 2015, come and be a part of The Factory’s annul auction. Starting at 9am many local items along with gift certificates will be auctioned off with the proceeds going to The Factory. If you are not able to be there in the morning come for a delicious lunch. Chicken bar-b-que, hamburgers, hot dogs, along with homemade cream filled donuts all provided by the Stoltzfus family. Hope you will be able to join in the fun. We are in need of some adult and Jr High helpers. Please call or email the church or write Elise a note if you are available to help. If you can only help a few days that is okay. Also, we’re once again in need of cookies and juice boxes! Please bring them to the kitchen and mark them for VBS. This year we’re going to have a very exciting Adult class! We’ll be learning about the 5 Solas of the Protestant Reformation and eating fabulous snacks at the same time in the company of our senior high kids. That’s right, we’re trying out a combined adult/teen class this year. Please come, bring friends, and prepare for 5 nights of fun and fellowship with other adults and the chance to get to know our older teens. VBS is Bellevue’s biggest outreach event and we depend on you to help make it a success. Please consider volunteering this year. Encourage friends of all ages to come, but most of all, pray that God is glorified and that we have the opportunity to touch hearts for Christ in our community. Children’s Library Day Need some summer reading material? Did you know that the first Sunday of each month when the children are at Sunday School they spend time in the Children’s Library looking for books to read? Are you looking for some good books for them? Come to Sunday School on the first Sunday and let them spend time in the library with Mrs. Perella looking for a new adventure or story to read! And don’t forget, that is the time to return your books that you took out the month before! 4 YOUTH MINISTRY Kevin Sheahan, Director of Youth Ministries Another school year is nearly in the books, and the hazy, lazy, crazy days of summer are upon us. Summertime can be a wonderful time to reflect and re-energize, to make changes in our lives that are difficult to initiate during the busy rhythm of the school year. The Youth Ministry has a number of ways for the youth to develop spiritually, as well as have some fun, enjoy the outdoors, and create memories. Here are the highlights: SUMMER YOUTH GROUP June 28th, July 12th, August 2nd, August 23rd During the summer, we will no longer meet as usual. Instead, we will meet four times, outside the church building, for summer youth group which includes a more casual atmosphere of games, snacks, and a lesson. The dates and locations are: June 28 (Browns in Narvon) July 12 (Thompsons in Strasburg), August 2 (Houcks in Gap) August 23 (Roelands in Paradise). HIGH SCHOOL BIBLE STUDY All those who will be in senior high this fall are welcome to attend the Bible study on Wednesday mornings. We will meet at various places in the area, like Corner Coffee Shop, Shady Maple Café, and Bird-in-Hand Bakery. As we study the gospel of Mark at a relaxed pace, we will have time to enjoy each other’s company over a cup of coffee and a donut. Dark green bookmarks outside Kevin’s office have more information. HERSHEY PARK August 10th What better way to end the summer than with a day of fun (and chocolate)? Bellevue has forty $40 tickets, open to any families that have children who will be in 6th-12th grade this coming fall. SUMMERFEST 2015 JUNE 18th TO 21st SummerFest is a camping trip, retreat, service project, and a blast, all rolled into one. Four days and three nights of speakers, swimming, slip-n-slide, and singing around the campfire. SummerFest is the perfect kick-off to the summer, including plenty of fun, opportunities for spiritual development, and an afternoon of a local service project. YOUTH MISSION/SERVICE TRIP July 1st to July 5th This year, we are beginning a partnership with Northeast Community Church (PCA) in Philadelphia, which is located in an area of the city with a lot of immigrant and 2nd-generation families. We have an incredible ability to bless their church, as well as to experience a very multi-cultural area that is little more than an hour away. We will provide help on various work projects, experience Chinese, Albanian, Arab, and Latino cultures, and throw a 4th of July party, American-style, to attract neighbors to the church. BACKPACKING TRIP AUGUST 6th – 8th Being surrounded by the beauty of God’s creation while camping in the wilderness is a wonderful way to settle the soul. Carrying heavy backpacks over tall mountains is a wonderful way to bond a group together. We plan to cover 25 miles of the Catskill Mountains, challenging body and mind, and talking about the questions of our faith around the campfire. SIGNUP SHEETS Signup sheets for the four special events are available outside Kevin’s office, as well as 2015/2016 Emergency Treatment Consent Forms, which are necessary as well. 5 2015 HIGH SCHOOL GRADUATES This year, Bellevue is pleased to announce the graduation of ten of our youth: Mitchell Bair, Rob Bitts, Beka Brown, Jason Brown, Tim Felker, Brandon Hall, Curtis Hall, Sean Hershey, Lucie Hollosi, and Ethan Houck. In the past we have combined into one class and we will do that again this year. The quarter will be made up of two different courses. We will begin the quarter with three stand-alone classes taught by different teachers. We have asked three teachers to teach us on something that they are currently passionate about. The second half of the course will be a nine week video series on “Gospel Shaped Outreach” taught by Phil Castor, Kevin Sheahan, and JT Holderman. It is a course on evangelism, what it is and how to do it. We strongly urge that if you are a member of Bellevue you attend this class since the great commission, to “Go and make disciples,” is not a suggestion, but a command from our Lord to any who would be His disciples, who would be Christian. Join us as we learn how to share the Gospel. Please keep the teachers in prayer as they prepare to instruct us. Adult Sunday School offers foundational teaching in Bible, theology, and Christian discernment, for the purpose of building up the body of Christ, and equipping one another for ministry all for the glory of God. COMMUNITY GROUPS The Community Groups of Bellevue continue to be a tool for strengthening the faith of their members. Please continue to pray for the 11 CGs and the nearly 130 people who are members of them. Our leaders met a month ago to focus on the next phase of our CGs, living on mission together. The four legs of CGs are 1) relationships, 2) discipleship, 3) care for one another, and 4) mission. Now that our CGs have grown and relationships have fostered, it is time for us to think intentionally about how each group can share the good news of salvation and the Gospel with their communities and neighborhoods. The great commission to “Go therefore and make disciples” is not a suggestion, it is a command and the backbone of all who would be called Jesus’ disciples. We encouraged the leaders to talk with their groups about how their group could band together and encourage one another to share this good news. Please pray for the CGs of Bellevue as they step out in faith with only the courage Christ can give to share the Gospel. And if you have any ideas how our groups might go about being missional, please contact a CG leader. Pray for these groups and pray that the Gospel would make a difference in their neighborhoods and communities We were pleased to receive the following new members into our fellowship this spring.
