Cut 3 strips 2½".
Subcut into 4 rectangles 2½" x 4½"
and 28 squares 2½" x 2½".
Fabric B:
Cut 1 strip 4½".
Subcut into 4 squares 4½" x 4½"
and 8 rectangles 4½" x 2½".
Cut 2 strips 2½".
Subcut into 12 squares 2½" x 2½".

squares in half diagonally once to yield
4 triangles.
Border:

Subcut into 8 rectangles 2½" x 12½"
and 8 rectangles 2½" x 113/ 8".
Sewing:
1-4. Follow Steps 1-4 on page 7 of book.
5. Follow Step 5 on page 8 of book, making
only 8 "hearts" using 4 Background 5¼"
squares and 16 Fabric F 27/ 8" squares.
6. Follow Step 6 on page 8, making only 16
Flying Geese.
7-12. Follow Steps 7-12 on pages 8 & 9 of
book.

Finishing:
48. Stitch 9 center blocks together in rows as
shown in Layout on next page. Press seams in
first and third row away from large stars. Press
center row seams away from center square.
49. Add pieced triangles from Step 47 to 4 sides
matching star points with Fabric B squares and
borders with adjoining borders. See Layout.
50. Make cut from one point to center of tree
skirt. Cut 5" circle in center square. See Illust.

51. Cut batting to exact size of tree skirt,
including slit and circle.
52. If you need to piece your backing, cut
rectangle 65" x width of fabric. Cut remaining
fabric in half lengthwise to yield 2 rectangles
45" x 20". Remove all selvages. Mark center
of each side of large rectangle. Mark center
of one side of each smaller rectangle. Match
marks and stitch smaller rectangles to each side
of larger rectangle. Press seams toward smaller
rectangles. See Illust. T-2.

53. Layer backing right side up, then tree skirt
wrong side up, then batting. Baste. Stitch ¼"
from outside edges, leaving inside 5" circle
unsewn. Cut backing to match tree skirt,
including slit and circle. Trim seam allowances
at outside corners and clip seam allowances at

inside corners. Turn to right side. Press edges.
Topstitch sewn edges 3/ 8" from outside edge to
hold backing in place.
Binding:
54. From trimmed backing fabric, cut 2 strips
on the bias, 14-18" long by 2¾". Stitch bias
strips together to make one long strip. Fold in
half lengthwise, wrong sides together. Press.
Mark center of strip. Match mark to center
circle at point opposite slit in tree skirt on right
side of tree skirt with raw edges even. Stitch
binding around circle using 3/ 8" seam, being
careful not to stretch binding. Fold binding to
back side of tree skirt and stitch in place. Press
free ends of tie to match finished circle. Stitch
along folds to secure.
