Camp Radford opened its doors in 1982 and today over 300 hundred kids (including kids from surrounding Boys & Girls Clubs) enjoy going to camp every summer. Located about an hour from the Club on the Little Wolf River, surrounded by natural wetlands, kids get the opportunity to experience a new environment, sunshine and fresh air. They also participate in a wide variety of outdoor activities including swimming, fishing, hik- ing, scavenger hunts, a challenge course, stargazing, campfire meals and crafts. For many of these youth, it is their first ever camp experience, and the memories they make last a lifetime. Research by campparents.org shows that kids who go to summer camp develop self-identity, self-worth, self-esteem, leadership and self-respect. "Camp has a magical power to shape kids who often struggle within the Club environment into calm, relaxed nature explorers,” said Danielle Bittelman, the education director at the Boys & Girls Club. "Each camp experience benefits members in a way only nature makes possible.” Thanks to the BGCO Alumni group, Camp Radford is well maintained and costs are kept low. Each camp season, alumni graciously donate their time and manpower to performing the tasks necessary to open and close the camp and keep it in tip-top shape. Camp Radford is funded heavily by donations and money raised by alumni. Alumni even provide funds for an additional staff member for overnight trips so that more kids are able to come to camp.
