POSITIVE AFFIRMATION
In our world which often seems to focus on criticism rather than
affirmation and appreciation, it was thought provoking to hear Brett
Kirk (AFL footballer) talking to Judith Lucy on the ABC about the
importance to him of his use of daily affirmations during meditation;
words such as, “I am honest, I’m passionate, I’m courageous, I’m
disciplined, I have a concentrated mind, I’m compassionate,
I’m aware, I’m a good listener, I’m patient, I am tolerant,
I’m adventurous, I’m loving, I’m affectionate, I am kind, I’m responsible.”
He also said he didn’t dwell on the past or worry about the future
because “the only moment we have, is this moment right now”.
Critical thoughts can be directed at others or self directed – both of
which are so destructive. Criticism can leave us powerless, ineffectual and defensive. Wouldn’t it be great if we could rather focus on
the strengths we have (and those of others) which would leave us
feeling energised, uplifted and strong? Let people know when you
think they are kind, responsible, courageous, honest, passionate, a
good listener etc. Remind yourself of your own strengths daily and
add to the ones listed above.
After all, nobody gets enough positive affirmation.
