Dress Tanja
Tanja is a fancy dress with tulip skirt
and cap sleeves. There is also a
version with long sleeves included.

zipper for dresses, 60cm
bias tape, 190cm for the cap sleeves
or 80cm for the long sleeves

Cutting / Preparation
Choose your size and copy the pattern onto pattern tracing paper. Tissue paper
for copying patterns can be found in fabric and notions stores.
Place the pattern pieces onto the fabric, the marked sides showing up. Consider
the cutting plan below.
( 1 ) Neaten the side edges of the skirt and the bodice pieces with a
zigzag-stitch. Do this to the edges of the shoulders as well.
Cut all pieces!
Please Note: A sewing allowance of has already been included into the pattern!
Unless otherwise noted the sewing allowance measures 1cm. A seam allowance is
marked in the pattern.
Copy all marks from the pattern pieces to the left side of the fabric pieces using
dressmaker’s carbon and a tracing wheel. Baste in marks for pockets, for example,
to make them visible on the right side of the fabric.

The fabric is laid out in one single layer. The right side of the fabric is showing up.
The pattern pieces are placed and pinned onto the fabric with the marked sides showing
up.

( 2 ) Sew the darts of the bodice pieces. Place the dart marks correctly on top of
each other, right sides facing. Start at the bottom and stitch towards the
point of the dart. Secure threads in the beginning and sew off the fabric
leaving a long tail. Knot the tail close to the edge. Press the darts towards
the side.
( 3 ) Pin bodice pieces right sides together and close the shoulder seams.
Press seams open. Close the right side seam and press seam open.
( 4 ) Hem the sleeves: Press the bottom of the sleeve to the inside 1cm and again
1cm. Stitch in place. Pin the sleeves to the bodice right sides together.
Make sure the marks match up nicely.
Please Note: When sewing Tanja without sleeves, hem the scye using bias tape,
then fold in 1cm and topstitch.
( 5 ) Hem the neckline using bias tape, fold in 1cm and topstitch. Press.
( 6 ) Pin the darts in the skirt pieces and press towards the side. Place the
skirt pieces right sides together, pin and close the right side seam.
Press seam open.
( 7 ) Close the left seam up to the zipper mark. Press seam open.

( 8 ) Pin the skirt to the bodice right sides together and sew. Neaten the
edges using a zigzag-stitch and press towards the bodice.

( 10 ) Pin. Open the zipper, and stitch from the right side using a zipper foot.
Stop at about 5 cm before the bottom stop.

( 9 ) Sew the zipper into the left side seam: Press sewing allowances to the
side, close the zipper and place the zipper underneath the fabric so that
the teeth are covered.

( 11 ) Leave the needle down and close the zipper. Continue sewing until
reaching the bottom stop, stitch across.
( 12 ) Then sew the other side of the zipper. Again stop after sewing about
5cm, open the zipper up and finish stitching.
( 13 ) Pin the hem facings right sides together and close the side seams (short edges).
Press seams open. Pin the hem facing to the skirt hem right sides together and
sew. Fold the facing right sides out (thus fold in) and press carefully.
Handstitch the facing to the side seams.

( 14 ) For the cap sleeves dress hem the sleeves using bias tape or –to make things
easier- turn sewing allowance under twice and topstitch. Press well.
