Mason Dixon Challenge 2015 FAQ’s!
•
•
Check In: Liberty Mountain Resort Check in is from 6 am to 7 am. The ride begins at 7 am on
Saturday and Sunday. Cyclists are NOT PERMITTED to begin the ride until the official start time
for any reason! All support personnel, vehicles and supplies are not available along the route
until the start time.
Minimum Pledge Requirement: All riders must commit to raising the minimum pledge of $250
by the day of the event. All participants must have $250 turned in to pick up your rider credentials needed to participate. If you have not raised $250 at the time of packet pick up,
you will be asked to sign a “Promise to Pay” form and you will be charged for the remaining balance due after the fundraising and prize claim deadline. You can begin turning
in the pledges as early as you collect them. All pledge dollars must be handed in individually
for our record keeping - team captains can call to have team funds split and distributed to
team members at any time.
Bike Inspections: You’re going to spend lots of time training, and it would be a shame if your
bike isn’t ready to perform for the ride. We encourage every bicycle to have a check-up
prior to the ride. Visit one of our “official” shops for a quick bike check up!
Age Policy: If the child is under 18 years old, their parent or guardian must sign their waiver
form and have it notarized. The ratio of adult to child is 1:3. The child must remain with the
adult at all times. Children cycling alone will be sagged to the college or finish line. NO ONE
UNDER THE AGE OF 12 IS ALLOWED TO PARTICIPATE.
Volunteers: Anyone interested in helping at registration, a rest stop, a lunch area or the
overnight is encouraged to register at MSPAKeystone.org or call 1-800-344-4867.
Training: TrainingPeaks is an interactive web-based training log and food diary developed exclusively for us by renowned cycling expert Joe Friel, author of “The Cyclists Training
Bible.” These custom plans are available for FREE to our participants-check out the training
tab on our webpage for more information!

We’re here to help you reach your goals. Please let us know how we can help! By setting up a
page, you are setting up yourself for success. Here are a few hints to help make your page one to
remember:
• Make it personal: Put in a picture of you. Write the your story and how you are training and
fundraising. While there is sample text available, nothing is more compelling than your own
words.
• Change it often: Keep your page current to generate interest. Provide updates on how your training is going or how close you are to your goal.

directly to your page. Put a link to your fundraising page in the signature of your e-mail.

Safety Tips
BIKE SAFETY STARTS WITH YOU
Cyclists need to possess basic bike-handling skills and safety knowledge in order to keep themselves
and others around them safe, especially while participating in group cycling activities, like the Bike
MS Ride. Our focus is to provide a high quality, safe and fun bicycling experience. For this reason,
the National MS Society has partnered with the League of American Bicyclists to provide our cyclists
with the knowledge and resources to cycle safety.
Headphones, cell phones, radios and similar radio devices are not permitted while riding.
THE BASICS OF RIDING IN A GROUP
Group riding takes practice. Riding with other cyclists all around you may cause you to feel
trapped. Relax. It is most important to create your own safety zone. This may vary depending on
the speed and ability level of the people you are with, so be flexible.
YOUR RESPONSIBILITY IN A PACK INCLUDES:
• Be aware of others around you.
• Communicate well in advance: Use gestures in combination with verbal commands.
• Ride with your head up: Look down the road; not at the person in front of you.
• Maintain control & speed of your bike, even going downhill.
• Know your limits: Crashes can occur when inexperienced riders do not have bike-handling
skills to make quick decisions in a pack.
• Safety starts with you: Group mentality is not always safe. Expect to stop at all red lights and
stop signs — it is the law! Each cyclist is responsible for verifying that the intersection is
clear.
• Adjust your safety zone to fit the conditions of the road, weather & traffic — Always plan an
escape route.
• Never overlap your wheels with another cyclist.
• Do not use aerobars in a pack.
THE MS SOCIETY STAFF & MEDICAL VOLUNTEERS HAVE THE AUTHORITY
TO PULL YOU FROM THE ROUTE IF STANDARDS ARE NOT MET!
Rules of the Road and Safety
BICYCLING HELMETS ARE MANDATORY!!!
YOU ARE RESPONSIBLE FOR YOUR SAFETY AND THE SAFETY OF THOSE AROUND YOU AT ALL
TIMES! BE COURTEOUS TO DRIVERS AND TO THE COMMUNITIES WE RIDE THROUGH!
•Always wear a helmet
•Never wear headphones, iPods, etc.
•Ride single file to allow traffic to pass you safely. Only ride two abreast when appropriate.
•Ride on the right ONLY!
•Pass on your left only, be sure to yell, “On your left”
•Use hand signals and respond to signals from fellow cyclists
•Ride predictably - in a straight line, do not weave
•Do not follow too closely to other riders or draft behind cars
•Follow ALL traffic signs and traffic rules
•Watch out for gravel and uneven surfaces
•Cross railroad tracks at a right angle
•Talk to your fellow cyclists. Let them know: Car Back, Stopping, etc.
•Remember - this is not a race. Any attempt to race will put fellow cyclists in jeopardy.
SAFETY & HEALTH ARE TOP PRIORITIES OF BIKE MS. BE SURE TO:
•Drink plenty of fluids - 16-22 ounces per hour!
•Fill your water bottle at EVERY rest stop
•Make sure you use the restroom!
•If you feel light-headed - STOP! Let a medical volunteer at a rest stop, an MS Society staff member, or SAG driver know you need help!
•If a medical volunteer or MS Society Staff member advises you not to continue riding because of
a medical concern - STOP!
•Carry a cell phone and cue sheet with you - Emergency numbers are on the cue sheet!
