All pledge dollars must be handed in individually for our record keeping - team captains can call to have team funds split and distributed to team members at any time. Bike Inspections: You’re going to spend lots of time training, and it would be a shame if your bike isn’t ready to perform for the ride. We encourage every bicycle to have a check-up prior to the ride. Visit one of our “official” shops for a quick bike check up! Our focus is to provide a high quality, safe and fun bicycling experience. For this reason, the National MS Society has partnered with the League of American Bicyclists to provide our cyclists with the knowledge and resources to cycle safety. Headphones, cell phones, radios and similar radio devices are not permitted while riding. THE BASICS OF RIDING IN A GROUP Group riding takes practice. Riding with other cyclists all around you may cause you to feel trapped. Relax. It is most important to create your own safety zone. This may vary depending on the speed and ability level of the people you are with, so be flexible. YOUR RESPONSIBILITY IN A PACK INCLUDES: • Be aware of others around you. • Communicate well in advance: Use gestures in combination with verbal commands. • Ride with your head up: Look down the road; not at the person in front of you. • Maintain control & speed of your bike, even going downhill. • Know your limits: Crashes can occur when inexperienced riders do not have bike-handling skills to make quick decisions in a pack. • Safety starts with you: Group mentality is not always safe. Expect to stop at all red lights and stop signs — it is the law! Each cyclist is responsible for verifying that the intersection is clear. • Adjust your safety zone to fit the conditions of the road, weather & traffic — Always plan an escape route. • Never overlap your wheels with another cyclist. • Do not use aerobars in a pack. THE MS SOCIETY STAFF & MEDICAL VOLUNTEERS HAVE THE AUTHORITY TO PULL YOU FROM THE ROUTE IF STANDARDS ARE NOT MET! Rules of the Road and Safety BICYCLING HELMETS ARE MANDATORY!!! YOU ARE RESPONSIBLE FOR YOUR SAFETY AND THE SAFETY OF THOSE AROUND YOU AT ALL TIMES! BE COURTEOUS TO DRIVERS AND TO THE COMMUNITIES WE RIDE THROUGH! •Always wear a helmet •Never wear headphones, iPods, etc. •Ride single file to allow traffic to pass you safely. Only ride two abreast when appropriate. •Ride on the right ONLY! •Pass on your left only, be sure to yell, “On your left” •Use hand signals and respond to signals from fellow cyclists •Ride predictably - in a straight line, do not weave •Do not follow too closely to other riders or draft behind cars •Follow ALL traffic signs and traffic rules •Watch out for gravel and uneven surfaces •Cross railroad tracks at a right angle •Talk to your fellow cyclists. Let them know: Car Back, Stopping, etc. •Remember - this is not a race. Any attempt to race will put fellow cyclists in jeopardy. SAFETY & HEALTH ARE TOP PRIORITIES OF BIKE MS. BE SURE TO: •Drink plenty of fluids - 16-22 ounces per hour! •Fill your water bottle at EVERY rest stop •Make sure you use the restroom! •If you feel light-headed - STOP! Let a medical volunteer at a rest stop, an MS Society staff member, or SAG driver know you need help! •If a medical volunteer or MS Society Staff member advises you not to continue riding because of a medical concern - STOP! •Carry a cell phone and cue sheet with you - Emergency numbers are on the cue sheet! 2015 2015Bike Bike MS MS Prizes You to choose choose ONE ONE ofofthe thefollowing followingoptions: options: Youwill willhave have the the opportunity opportunity to •• Summit Marketing Prize Certificate Summit Marketing Prize Certificate •• Event Event Jersey/VIP Jersey/VIP Apparel Apparel •• Join Jointhe the Mission Mission First Club The Mission First Club: Each year, the PA Keystone Chapter purchases fundraising incentives for TheBike Mission First Club: Each year, the Keystone Chapter purchases incentives for Bike MS participants to reward themPAfor their fundraising efforts.
