timjacobsflyfishing.com Tim Jacobs Fly Tying Panfish, Bass, Pike/Musky Flies Fly Tying Seminars 2011 Fly Patterns •Foam Hoppers/Crickets! • Taps Bug •Casual Dress Nymph! • Fire Tiger Diver Introduction This is a nice group of flies for warmwater fishing. While several of the patterns could be used for trout, I tend to fish them as warmwater flies more often. All four patterns are flies that could be used here in western Colorado for bluegills, bass and pike. Fly Tying Seminar Polly Rosbourgh’s Casual Dress is a great fly for bluegill and other panfish. It will also attract the occasional bass. The Foam Hopper/Cricket is one of those flies that can cross over to the trout stream as well as attract panfish and bass. Hopper flies in general tend to be one of the more complicated patterns for a fly tyer. This pattern is relatively simple to tie. It floats well enough that a bead head nymph can be fished as a dropper on the trout stream. H. G. Tapply’s Tap’s Bug was first introduced in the 1940’s. It is the fly that modern bass bugs use as a template. I will tie the original as well a a few variations using some more modern materials. The final fly is a large deer hair diver using the new Spirit River Fire Tiger rabbit strips. The tailing materials are tied in a rather unique manner which will help prevent the rabbit strip from winding around the hook shank. - Tim Jacobs timjacobsflyfishing.com • FOAM HOPPER/CRICKET Hook: TMC 100 #10 Glue: Zap-a-Gap Thread: 3/0 (140) Color to match foam Body: 1/8 inch closed cell foam Underwing: Deer hair with optional midge flash Overwing: Mottled Turkey to match body color Legs: Medium Centipede Legs or other medium rubber legs Coat the front third of the hook shank with Zap-a-Gap glue.
