Our last scheduled outing for the year is over and was a big success.
Nine members went after the big one on Sunday Oct 12 and most of the
members caught some of the trophy rainbows. There were not a lot of
fish caught but the ones caught gave our fly fishers a good fight and a lot
of fun. It also inspired our members to plan another unscheduled outing
to Butterfield Lake. It was a bigger outing than Middle Empire with 12
members having a great time. When I left I believe Bruce O’Dell had
over 24 trophy rainbows to his float boat. It was the black wooly bugger
doing the job. The trophy rainbows are still in the small lakes but they
will be harder and harder to catch which in some ways makes it a lot
more fun. So keep after them and let us know how you’re doing.
While we are talking about the outings I’m sure Jerry Brouhard, our outing coordinator, will be looking for input from members to help with the
2015 outing schedule. It would be fun to go to some different places this
coming year so give Jerry a call and make suggestions.
Dennis Marsh is in the process of organizing the Expo for 2015. He will
be working with Reedsport Charter High School to schedule the event on
Feb 28, 2015. The Expo requires a lot work coordinating the fly tiers,
programs, exhibitors, and the donation items. Gary Vonderohe will be
contacting the last year donators by letter but he is going to need help
with the local donators so if you have time please give Gary a call.
We have the Lakeside Lodge reserved for our Christmas dinner on
Wednesday Dec 10 at 6:00 pm social hour and 7:00 pm for the dinner. I
will be coordinating the event and will develop a list of members who
wants to attend the dinner. More details will follow.
I also want to remind you that the election of officers for 2015 will happen at the Christmas dinner so anybody who would like to become an
officer just let me know and we will put you on the election form. Being
an officer gives you an excellent opportunity to help improve our sport
and support activities that ensure we and our grandchildren will have the
opportunity to fish during their lifetime.
See you all on the water,
Robert O'Bryan

Fly of the Month
The fly this month is the Possie-bugger. This well-known pattern probably originated somewhere
around the McKenzie River region in Oregon but since has become widely fished in the western
United States and even on the eastern US rivers. The fly was originally tied with Aussie possum
but can be substituted with other materials. The Possie-bugger is a great seaching pattern and can
be fished as a nymph or a streamer, it'll work both ways. It imitates everything from a stonefly to a
caddis.
I have used this fly on the McKenzie River along with other Willamette River tributaries. This fly
should be in everyone’s fly box no matter if you are fishing trout, steelhead, smallmouth bass, or
even carp.
Hook: Size 12-8 nymph hook
Thread: 6/0 black
Weight: lead weight
Bead: 3/32 black or gold bead
Tail: Red fox squirrel guard hair with a strand of
Flashabou on each side
Body: Red squirrel underfur with guard hairs
mixed in
Rib: Pearl flashabou
Hackle: Partridge feather
Collar: Peacock herl or black dubbing
Tying Instructions
1. Push the bead onto the hook, then start wrapping the thread towards the bend of the hook. You can also add additional weight by making several wraps of lead around the hook.
2. Tie in the squirrel guard hairs and flashabou for the tail.
3. Dub the squirrel underfur onto the thread and make several wraps to form the body. Counter wrap the flashabou
over the body to form the rib and tie off.
4. Tie in the tip of the partridge feather and make a couple turns around the hook to form the hackle leaving just
enough space for the collar.
5. Tie in and make a couple turns of peacock herl. Tie off, trim loose end, and whip finish.

I was reading a few of the other Oregon flyclub newsletters and I saw this very interesting upcoming seminar.
The Central Oregon Flyfishers will be hosting a winter seminar on Saturday and Sunday
February 21 & 22, 2015 at the Bend River House & Convention Center. The Winter Seminar is a two-day event conducted every other year and hosted alternately by COF and the
Sun River Anglers. This coming event will be hosted by COF and we are pleased to have
world renowned angler & conservationist Craig Mathews of the Blue Ribbon Fly Shop, West
Yellowstone. Craig and his wife Jackie have won numerous conservation awards for their
environmental work such as “The Protector of Yellowstone National Park Award” presented
by Yellowstone National Park, both The Nature Conservancy and Greater Yellowstone Coalition’s coveted conservation business of the year awards, and many more. Craig was Fly Rod
and Reels “2005 World Angler of the Year”, Trout Unlimited’s “Stream Champion” in 2011
and honored with the Fly Tyer Magazine “Lifetime Achievement Award”.
Craig has authored and co-authored 9 important books on fishing. His latest, “Simple FlyFishing with Tenkara” was
released in April 2014 and co-authored with Patagonia Inc. founder, Yvon Chouinard. Craig
co-founded 1% for the Planet an alliance of businesses donating 1% of their gross sales to
researched and approved conservation causes. To date 1% for the Planet has donated over
$135 million to conservation and environmental programs.
Craig still ties 500-750 dozen flies each year. Craig enjoys writing and is working on another
book this winter.
Registration for this seminar will begin December 10, 2014, and for more details contact Eric Steele phone 541-549-2072 or email at [email protected]
For those of you that have not seen Mending the Line it will become available for purchase
on Veteran’s Day. This is a movie about Frank Moore’s return to Europe with his family to
visit the areas that he fought in during World War II. This is a very good movie and I would
recommend it to everyone.
Orders for the Mending the Line DVD and purchase with Video on Demand will go live on
Veteran's Day, November 11. You will be able to purchase the film through the new website
at www.mendingtheline.com The DVD will have both the 20 minute short and the 48 minute
feature on it.
