Starting this Thursday, March 19, 2015 the electronic form for both, science and art abstract submission will be available at the
Departmental web page (http://biology.uprm.edu) to participate in the Fifth Undergraduate Research Symposium & Art in Science on
May 2, 2015. For the past four years the symposium has offered our undergraduate students the opportunity to present their research
and to share with faculty and community members in a friendly academic environment. This year the deadline for abstract submission
is Thursday, April 9, 2015. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact Jeanine Vélez ([email protected])and/or

Science Abstract Submission Guidelines
1. Eligibility requirements include:
a. The research must be of a biological nature. Appropriate research topics
include organismal biology, evolution, genetics, ecology, cellular and
molecular biology, microbiology, biochemistry, and related fields. If you
are not sure whether your research is appropriate for the symposium, you
should contact one of the organizers.
b. Only undergraduate research may be presented. At the time of the
symposium the presenter can be a graduate student or registered courses as
“Mejoramiento profesional”, but only if the research to be presented was
conducted during his/her undergraduate study program.
c. All participants must obtain explicit permission from their research
mentors. If you participated in externally funded research, you must get
authorization from the Principal Investigator (PI) to present the research.
2. Abstract (English or Spanish) should be 250 words or less.
3. Single space should be used throughout.
4. Font:
a. 12 point
b. Times New Roman or Arial
5. Abstract should include:
a. Presentation Title
i. Brief and clear.
1. No more than 75 characters, including spaces.
ii. Capitalized
b. Student name and name (s) of collaborators in this format:
i. First author’s last name, First name initial(s), Second author’s first
name initial (s) second author’s last name, etc.

i. Your abstract should contain, at least, 1-2 introductory sentences, 1
sentence to state your objective(s), 1-2 sentences devoted to
methodology, 1-2 sentences of the most relevant results, and at
least 1 sentence as a conclusion statement.
6. Abstract should not include citations, tables, graphs or photographs. Also,
acknowledgements should be excluded from the abstract.
7. Make sure your abstract is error-free before submission. After the final revision
and having completed the information at the end of the form, send the completed
form electronically.
“Art in Science” Abstract Submission Guidelines
1. Eligibility requirements include:
a. The art must be of a biological nature. Appropriate topics include
organismal biology, evolution, genetics, ecology, cellular and molecular
biology, microbiology, biochemistry, and related fields. If you are not sure
whether your art piece is appropriate for the symposium, you should
contact one of the organizers.
b. Only undergraduates may participate. All participants must obtain explicit
permission if the art was the result of a group collaboration.
2. Abstract (English or Spanish) should be 250 words or less and should explicitly
explain the biological concept in the art.
3. Single space should be used throughout.
4. Select the art category: Photography, Comics, Painting, Scientific Illustration, 3D
etc.
