Chairmen`s invitation - BioPhotonics 2015

Chairmen’s invitation
“Biophotonics is a multidisciplinary research area that utilizes light-based technologies, in medicine and
life science. T he vision behind biophotonics is to gain a full understanding of the origin and molecular
mechanisms of diseases to either prevent them or, at least, diagnose them early and precisely, followed by
a treatment which is specifically adapted to individual needs.”
(by “Lighting the way ahead”, P hotonics21 Str ategic Resear ch Agenda, 2010)
Dear P ar ticipants to the IEEE BioP hotonics confer ence,
After the success of the fir st inter national IEEE BioP hotonics Wor kshop (P ar ma, Italy 2011)
and the second one (Taipei, Taiwan, 2013), the Institute of Applied P hysics of the National
Resear ch Council of Italy and the IEEE Italy Section ar e pleased to welcome you to the thir d
appointment of the ser ies.
Fr om the beginning of the Inter national Wor kshop BioP hotonics2011 or ganization, it has
been clear that talking about biophotonics would have meant to gather scientists with many
differ ent exper iences, competences and backgr ound to cover all differ ent aspects of this new
and emer ging field.
The IEEE BioP hotonics meetings has been established as a high-level meeting in the ar ea of
light-based techniques for medicine, life science, agr icultur e, envir onmental science and
many other ar eas of application. Being at BioP hotonics2015 is thus a unique oppor tunity to
inter act with a multidisciplinar y and fer tile for um of exper ts, wher e r esear cher s and
pr ofessionals exchange their specific knowledge and exper iences.
The confer ence will have thr ee P lenar y Sessions with keynote speaker s fr om all over the wor d
and four teen fur ther or al sessions plus two poster ones and an exhibitor showcase. The main
topics compr ise: diagnostics and ther apeutics applications; imaging; integr ated optical
devices; micr oscopy; modeling; nano biophotonics; optofluidic platfor ms; sensing and
plasmonic platfor ms; spectr oscopy. Mor e than thir ty invited speaker s will enr ich the
confer ence pr esenting the activity of impor tant Eur opean and inter national r esear ch gr oups.
Also, a joint session with ICOB 2015 will take place in the after noon of May 20th within the
so-called "Flor ence Biophotonics Week".
We ar e confident that between abstr acts, technical sessions, food and city tour s, all
par ticipants will contr ibute to lead a ver y r ewar ding confer ence.
Have a gr eat time in Flor ence at IEEE BioP hotonics2015!

Shaped light fields namely pr opagation invar iant (‘non-diffr acting’) light fields and

single plane illumination (light sheet) micr oscopy (SP IM). This modality uses or thogonal
detection for r apid imaging of lar ge, thr ee-dimensional, samples of living tissue.
Illumination with a thin sheet of light ensur es high contr ast by minimizing the fluor escent

Spectr al quantitative optoacoustic imaging is based on the knowledge of the local fluence
distr ibution, which can exper imentally be deter mined either by near -infr ar ed imaging or
by single point illumination optoacoustic imaging. Phantom exper iments show that both
techniques allow to quantitatively r etr ieve the spectr al infor mation of embedded

Mor phological dependence of optical Whisper ing Galler y Mode (WGM) micr or esonator s

The latter is small, so only a highly spectr ally sensitive fluor escence micr ospectr oscopy
(FMS) enabled detection of the pr obe accumulation in low-pH compar tments of DCs

By using fluor escence micr ospectr oscopy and Foer ster r esonance ener gy tr ansfer we
identify the accumulation of TiO2 nanopar ticles on the membr anes. Aggr egates of the TiO2
nanopar ticles become wr apped by the membr ane lipids and diffuse away, r esulting in a
lipid outflow that cr itically destabilizes the lipid bilayer .
