BirdLife Australia at ArtGeo Gallery 23-30 May 2015 “Nature Wise and Wonderful” Words and pictures from the bush and beach By Sue Kalab Sue Kalab specialises in watercolours of Australian nature with a special interest in birds and bush orchids. The exhibition runs Friday 8 May – Sunday 14 June. In collaboration, BirdLife Australia is holding free public presentations at ArtGeo Gallery. Using the exhibition space as a forum, Birdlife Australia is celebrating May’s world environment days with several fascinating presentations about birds. Presentations will be followed by a light afternoon tea and an opportunity to view Sue’s artworks. Saturday 23 May, 1.45 – 4 pm Tales from the Tundra: The journey of Australia’s migratory shorebirds To celebrate World Migratory Bird Day (13 May), BirdLife Australia’s Kimberly Onton will tell the story of Australia’s migratory shorebirds. Follow the annual transequatorial migration, departing from their tundra nesting grounds, through their time in Australia, their stopover sites in Asia and their return to the Arctic. Explore their fascinating ecology, learn about ground-breaking research and meet the inspirational people dedicated to understanding and protecting these amazing birds. Sunday 24 May, 1.45 – 4 pm Conserving WA’s Black Cockatoos To celebrate World Biodiversity Day (21 May), BirdLife Australia’s Black-Cockatoo Project Officer Matt Byrne will speak about these magnificent Western Australian birds and the many efforts to conserve them. Saturday 30 May, 1.45 – 4 pm Birdsong To celebrate World Museum Day (16 May), learn about birdsong with ecologist Marieke Weerheim. Discover how birds communicate and get to know the sounds of local south west birdlife.
