Come join us! April 2015 Volume 24 Issue 4 Earth Day/Make a Difference Day Celebration Saturday, April 25, 2015 9:00 a.m. until noon By Terry Manning Earth Day 2015 is Wednesday, April 22, 2015. Experience tells us that the later in the month we can schedule, the better our chances are for good weather. With that logic in mind, the day chosen for our community celebration is the following Saturday on April 25. We need you and your volunteers. Some call it the “Earth Day Celebration,” others call it “Make a Difference Day,” but by any name it has the same intent: To help clean up our roadsides, eliminate debris and just generally clean up our community. We welcome all parties to come and help us make our community a better, more attractive place to live. Project Pride Work Date Set for April 18, 2015 The is a project started years ago by Bill Pindle and a worthy project it is. Bill has promised that the snow and cold is about to come to an end and that we’ll have good weather to get our work done. Along with his volunteers, the plan is to spruce up the bridge and adjoining area on Saturday, April 18. The party starts early and most of the group will get to work about 7:30 to 7:45 a.m. Work is normally completed by 9:00 a.m. Give Bill a call at 633-9333 if you would like to join this celebration. Please call us and give us information regarding your groups and its intentions at 633-0130 or email us at [email protected]. We deploy from the Bridgeport Fire Department Station 1 (from one of the out buildings). We do our best to accommodate groups of all ages and abilities. We can credit you for 3 hours with your active participation if you are in need of community service credits. We will have coffee, hot chocolate and donuts to get you started, and hot dogs and drinks as a reward for your effort towards the end of the morning’s work Oneida Lake Association Annual Meeting CNS High Wednesday, April 29, 7:00 p.m. The Oneida Lake Association (OLA) was founded in 1945 to protect, restore and preserve the natural resources of Oneida Lake and its surrounding ecosystem. Bridgeport Elementary honored as a State School of Character By Courtney Cook, Oneida Daily Dispatch Bridgeport Elementary School is one of 15 schools in the state to receive State School of Character recognition by character.org, a national advocate and leader for the character education movement in collaboration with the Academy for Character Education at Sage College. “I am very proud of the school and the community that the school resides in,” said Principal Mary Farber, adding that past teachers and students made this recognition possible. Farber also talked about the mother’s club that fought to help have the school built back in the early 1950s, because they felt it was important where all the kids could go to learn. “The community built this school and they had a vision for it,” Farber said. “We are living their vision.” Bridgeport Elementary has demonstrated its use of character development to drive a positive impact on academics, students behaviors and create a caring and positive climate. Fifth grader Catherine Koster said Bridgeport takes character education seriously to make sure everyone pays attention and understands what they are saying. Third graders Anna Chatwin and Devin Olmsted work on iPads during class on March 9 at Bridgeport Elementary. Courtney Cook - Oneida Daily Dispatch Bingo At St. Francis is Back!
