Title: Installing and Configuration of VMware Vcenter 5.5
1. Scope of Document :
Installation of VMware Vcenter Server, Inventory Services, SSO,
Web Client and Update Manager.
2. Prerequisite Requirements For Lab Demonstration.
Please reference to Vmware Vcenter Server and Other Features of Vcenter at
www.vmware.com.
*Software: Vcenter 5.5 binaries
*VMware-VIMSetup-all-5.5.0-1378901-20131001
*Hardware Requirements:
-Database: Windows SQL Server 2012
-Disk: 60 G, and 8 G of RAM
(*will be using sql express bundle with installer)
*OS: Windows 2012 R2
*vcenter AD service Acct account. I.E Mvp.local /Vcenteracct
3. Install Core Vcenter Prerequisite Requirements.
*Mount VMware-VIMSetup-all-5.5.0-1378901-20131001 software
a. Vcenter Single Sign On(SSO).
1.Click Install to start Simple Install option, Click Next.
2. Accept the EULA-and Check I accept the terms.. and Click Next.
3. simple Install Prerequestistes will validate FQDN and IP for SSO.
4. Vcenter Single Sign On-(SSO), input SSO password and click next.
5. Simple Install Configure Site- Keep it default- and Click Next (*Organization typical name the
SSO Site name specific OU name.)
6. Install Port Settings- Keep it default(7444) and Click Next.
(please consult your NOS security if there specific port schema to follow).
7. Destination Folder Path- Keep default and Click Next
( C:\Program Files\Vmware\Infrastructure\)
8. Installer confirm configure setting- Click Install.
* There a pop Stop running this script?- Click Yes always.
You will see Installation in progress status...
b. Vsphere Web Client .
1. Select vsphere Web Client and Click Install.
2. Click Ok -Vmware Vsphere Web Client-InstallShield Wizard.
Installer Web Client status pop...
3. Vmware vsphere Web Client- Click Next.
4. EULA-Click I accept EULA and Click Next.
5. Destination Folder Path- Keep default.(C:\program Files\Vmware\Infrastructure\) and Click Next.
6. Configure Ports- Keep Default- Http(9090) and Https(9443)-Click Next.
7. Vcenter Single Sign On Information. Input same pw input at #4 and click next . (4. Vcenter Single
Sign On-(SSO), input SSO password and click next.)
8. Click Yes. Pop Vmware vsphere web client SSL SHA1-
9. Certificate Installation for Secure Connection, Click Install Certification.
10. Click Install- Ready to Install-
11. VMware Vsphere Web Client Installation Progress Status .....
12. Click Finish To Complete Web Client Installation.
13. Click Ok To Close Web Client Installation. (*This should conclude Web Client Installation).
c. Vcenter Inventory Service.
this section will cover the Vcenter Inventory Service Installation. The Inventory Service stores Vcenter
Server application and inventory data, enable you to search and access objects across linked vcenter
Server systems.
1. Select Vcenter Inventory Services and Click Install.
2. Click Ok begine Vmware Vcenter Inventory Service.
3. Click Next To Continue with Vcenter Inventory Services.
4. EULA- Click I agree with EULA and Next.
5. Click Next -Choice the Default Destination Path. (c:\Program Files\Vmware\Infrastructure\)
*If there a previous inventory server installation, you might get prompt to keep my existing database.
for this demonstration- we will choice replace my existing database with an empty one. need to click
take back up of previous version to move forward.)
6. Click Next and Default Settings. -
7. Local System Information- Keep Default(FQDN for host installing inventory server services.)
8. Click Next with Default Settings. Configure Ports: http:(10443), Service Management:(10109),
Linked Mode communication port:(10111).
9. Choice Default Settings Inventory Size- -Small and Click Next. (*note it depends on how large your
implementation, please consult Vmware for appropriate settings.).
10. Registered Vmware Vcenter Inventory Service with Vcetner SSO - Input Same SSO Password and
Click Nex.
11. VMware Vcenter Inventory Services. - SSL SSO Lookup - Click Yes To accept.
12. Click Install To Continue Inventory Server Service.
13. Inventory Server Service Installation Status..
14. Click Finish Inventory Service.
This conclude the Vcenter Inventory Service Installation.
D. Install Vcenter Server.
This section will cover Vcenter Server installation and configuration. Vcenter Server manages
datacenter access control, performance monitoring and configuration, and unifies resources
from individual servers.
1. Select Vcenter Server and Click Install-
2. Click Ok To Begin Vcenter Server Installation.
3.Click Next-To Continue with Vcenter Server Installation.
4. EULA-Click radio botton. I agree with EULA and Click Next.
5. Click Next and Keep default-( Vcenter License Key Blank). Input it later.
6. Click Next and Choice Default Database Option. - SQL Server 2008 Express( If there a enterprise
Database you can click existing support Database, for this demonstration will use SQL Express.)
7. Enter the Vcenter Server Service Account Password and Click Next.
. (Assume Provisioned IN AD for Vcenter service Account.)
*uncheck Use Windows Local System Account- and input Vcenter service account password.
typically installer is ran as Vcenter Service Account .
8. Vcenter Service Link Mode Options- Click Create a Standalone Vmware Vcetner Server
Instance. * If you planned to linked two Vcenter, you can click Join a Vmware Vcenter Server
group using linked mode to share information.
9. Configure Ports- Keep Default and Click Next.
10. Click Small for JVM Memory Size- Click Small for this installation demonstration.

11. Vmware Vcenter Server- SSO -Input same SSO password and Click Next.( Enter from
previous SSO password sections)
12. Click Yes for SSL finger print.
13. Don't Click check box -This administrator is a user group and click Next.
14. Click Next -Keep Default Vcenter Inventory Services Information.
15. Destination Folder Path-Keep Default.(C:\Program Files\Vmware\Infrastructure\)
Click Next.
16. Click Install To Complete Installation.
*You will see the Vcenter Server Installation Progress Status..
17. Click Finish To Complete Vcenter Server Installation.*Vcenter Server Service will start post
of completing installation.
C. Validate Vcenter Server is working by logging into the Web Client and
Vsphere Client.
1. Web Client- IP Address of Vcenter Server:Port number 9443, For example,
https://192.168.2.4:9443
2. Click Continue to this website- To Continue.
Log into the Vcenter 1st time with Administrator User ID and Password set.

C. Vsphere Update Manager. This section will illustrate Update Manager Installation and
Configuration. (Update Manager enables centralized, automated patch and version
management for ESXI hosts, virtual machines, and virtual applicaces.)
1. Select Vsphere Update Manager and Click Install.
2. Click Ok To Continue Installation.
3. Click Next To Start Installation Wizard.
4. Click radio button-I accept the terms-EULA.
5. Click Next -Keep Default Values. Make sure Check Box is checed.-Download Update.
6. Enter Vcenter Server location Credentials. -Use the same AD user as Vcenter- Click Next.
Please note * user the vSphere administrator account ([email protected] and FQDN rather than the
IP address presented in the 1st install prompt.
7. Database Options- Select Default and Click Next.- (*Install MS 2008 R2 Express).
8. VUM Port Settings- Select Default Ports and Click Next - SOAP:8084,Web Port:9084,SSLPort:9087
9.Destination Folder -Select Default - Install Vuware Update Manager to and
Download Patches:
Click Next To Proceed.
*Make sure you have at least 120GB. Installation Prompt.
10. Click Install - To Proceed Installation VUM.

10. Click -Finish- Vmware Update Manager Installation Completed.
D.Enable AD Authentication Vcenter 5.5.
Scope: This document will illustrate AD Authentication to Vcenter 5.5 Installation Windows 2012 R2 and
Vmware Vcenter Server Appliance.
Prerequisites requirements:
Vcenter Server 5.5 and Vcenter Server Appliance 5.5(VSA) Installation Completed.
This documentation will provide Vcenter installation and other configuration.
A. Log into Web Client To add AD User and Group To Vcenter Access Control List Groups.
1. Open vSphere Web Client (https://<ADDRESS>:9443/vsphere-client)
2. Login as [email protected]
Password (Windows): Set during installation
Navigate to Administration > Single Sign-On > Configuration

4. (If there is no Single Sign-On configuration you are probably not logged in as
[email protected])
5. Click the green + sign to add an identity source
6. Select Identity Source Type:
A) Windows based vCenter Server 5.5:
Active Directory (Integrated Windows Authentication)
B )Click OK, Back at Identity Sources your AD should appear in the list and from now on
you are able to assign vCenter permissions to users and groups from your active directory.
When you are using the Integrated Windows Authentication, trusted domains are also
available. The functionality is very similar to vSphere 4.x and vSphere 5.0
1.Select you Active Directory and click the “world with arrow” button to make AD to your
default domain.
2. Click Yes to set default domain.
3. Go Users and Groups---> Groups--->Select Administrator Under Groups---->Add
Members--.
4. Add Principals-- Click on dropdown ----under Domain and Select AD Domain.
i.e: Mvp.local (Not vsphere.local)*N ote Y ou m ay need to select it a couple tim e due AD
need to pulled from Active Directory to local Vsphere Vcenter ADAM .
5. Select the User or Security Group to Add Vcenter Administrator Role and Click Ok.
6. Test to See Active Authentication is working. Log off Web Client and Log on within the AD User ID.
Domain\user ID and Password. I.E Below, Active Directory Users/Groups added to Vcenter
Administrator Role
Illustrates [email protected] user account was able authenticate to Venter 5.5.
*Note I have seen where there are issue between Authentication synch between Web Client and
Vsphere Client Fat Client. For you can log into the Web client but not Vsphere Client.
You will need to do the same steps ---> Login as Vsphere Client with the
[email protected] Credintals- Password (Windows): Set during installation
