Welcome TO ASCOT
Appropriately in Diamond Jubilee year, the 2012 Royal Meeting was unique in global
terms as it attracted the two highest rated horses in the world - Frankel and Black Caviar.
Everyone at Ascot was deeply honoured that the
connections of Black Caviar chose the Diamond
Jubilee Stakes alone to showcase the unbeaten
mare outside her home country. The brave
decision was vindicated when she beat the best
sprinter in Europe, Moonlight Cloud, in the most
dramatic of circumstances.
The final day of Royal Ascot was all about Black
Caviar, of course, but the week got off to a flying
start for the international visitors when Little
Bridge became the first winner of the King’s Stand
Stakes for Hong Kong.
No fewer than 45 horses from outside Europe
have now contested the two Royal Ascot sprints
since the start of the Global Sprint Challenge
in 2005. There have been four Australian
winners in that period, plus the ground-breaking

Choisir in 2003, and two for Hong Kong. The
USA came very close in 2009 when Cannonball
was runner-up in the then Golden Jubilee Stakes.
We were delighted that Japan was represented
in the King George VI & Queen Elizabeth Stakes
(sponsored by Betfair) in July through their Derby
winner, Deep Brillante, who contested a thrilling
race won by the German-trained Danedream,
in what was a truly cosmopolitan event.
Within these pages, you will find details of the
seven Group One races run at Royal Ascot in
June, the King George and a full listing of Ascot’s
Pattern and Listed races in 2013.
QIPCO British Champions Day will be staged
on 19th October and a further detailed brochure
for that event will be available in the summer.
Details on how to nominate, travel allowances,
medication controls in the UK, shipping,
quarantine, stabling and training facilities
available to visitors are included in this brochure.
Also listed are contact details for Ascot’s
international agents, who are there to assist you.

course LAYOUT
Ascot’s round track is just under one-and-three-quarter miles in length. The
round course descends from the mile-and-a-half (2400m) start into Swinley
Bottom, the lowest part of the track. It then turns right-handed and joins the
“Old Mile” course, which starts at a separate chute 1600m from the finish.

The course then rises to the right-handed home turn to join the straight mile
course. The run-in of about three furlongs (600m) rises slightly to
the Winning Post.

Travel Allowances
Enquiries are welcome concerning potential contributions towards
the cost of transport for 115+ rated horses travelling to the UK
from outside Europe to compete specifically in Group One races
at Ascot. Travel incentives will not apply for horses that have been
trained outside Europe but are being transferred to be campaigned
in Europe in the name of a European trainer. The racecourse
reserves the right to decide what does and what does not constitute
a “visiting internationally-trained horse”.
Ascot offers connections of each travelling horse (subject to
meeting the criteria above) an agreed “all in” travel allowance
towards the cost of the venture. This sum will depend on the
races being targeted, the horse’s rating and its profile. It is the
responsibility of the horse’s connections, thereafter, to settle directly
all charges incurred, including the horse shipping, personal flights,
stabling, access to training facilities and general expenditure.
However, assistance in organising and booking all of the above
is available through the International Racing Bureau, under their
contract with Ascot. Ascot will provide top class raceday hospitality
and badges for a reasonable number of connections accompanying
any horse when the horse is racing.

The 2013
Global Sprint
Challenge
Bonus
First conducted in 2005, the Challenge takes
in 10 races across Australia, Japan, Dubai,
Singapore, the UK and Hong Kong.
A US$1 million bonus is available to any horse
that wins a Challenge race in three different
countries, which can include the country where
the horse is trained.
The bonus will be split 75% to the owners and
25% to the trainer, with the US$1 million pool
split equally if more than one horse achieves the
feat in 2013.

Nomination
Procedures
Royal Ascot Group One races close on 23rd April, and the “King
George” closes on 11th June.
All nominations (race entries) should be made through your local
Jockey Club or Racing Authority, who are authorised to take
these directly and supply the necessary information to the British
Horseracing Authority (BHA) via their secretariat, Weatherbys. The
exception is for horses trained in the USA (see page 11).
Visiting horses (other than those coming from North America) require a
Racing Clearance Notification (RCN), which is to be submitted via the
racing authority where the horse is domiciled and can be requested by
the trainer or shipping agency.
Once a horse is nominated there are three further confirmation stages,
the dates for which are detailed on the race pages of this brochure.
Once an initial entry is made, the International Racing Bureau,
contracted by Ascot, will ensure that the rest of the process is managed
smoothly. They, and Ascot’s other agents and international partners,
are also available to assist in the initial nomination procedure, and all
contact details can be found on page 46-47.

Medication and
Doping Control
Pre-Shipping and
pre-race testing
The British Horseracing Authority (BHA) is the
sport’s governing and regulatory body in Great
Britain encourages international participation in
British Racing.
The BHA will facilitate pre-elective testing in
the event of concern about residual medication
in horses prior to shipping. Connections should
also note that, as with horses resident in Britain,
overseas visiting horses may be sampled at any
time whilst in training and both pre and postrace. Elective testing is also offered at the trainer’s
cost if required.
The Authority’s Rules of Racing stipulate that
international visiting horses racing under BHA
rules do so on equal terms with each other and
resident British horses; that is to say they race free
from the effects of drugs, whether medication or
other substances.

The BHA will require all trainers of runners from
outside Europe to sign a form, pre-exportation,
detailing past medication history.

Shipping AND
Quarantine
Trainers are free to choose their own shipping
agencies and to make their own stabling
arrangements in Britain. However, Ascot, through
the International Racing Bureau, is happy to give
advice on this and stabling has been reserved
at Abington Place Stables in Newmarket, which
has proved very popular with overseas trainers
in the past.
There is no post-arrival quarantine period for
horses coming to race in Britain. There will be
some pre-export quarantine for horses returning
to Australia and Hong Kong, and your local
shipping agencies/turf club can advise on this.
Equine Influenza (EI) vaccinations are required
for horses entering Britain and you should speak
to your local shipping agencies to check on the
current UK racing regulations.
It is also important that your horse’s EI
vaccinations correspond with any requirements
by countries through which you are transiting
and for your onward destination after your visit
to Britain.

VAT (tax/Duty)
Colts and fillies imported into the UK have a VAT
liability of 20% of their landed value (the value of
the horse and cost of shipping). Geldings carry a
further 11.5% Import Duty.
The VAT can be secured by a deposit or bank
guarantee, which is refunded when the horse
leaves the country.
Ascot will assist with the administration of the
bank guarantee. If the horse remains in the UK
after the end of October, or is sold, the VAT will
need to be paid outright by the connections.

Stabling and
Training Facilities
Visiting horses must be trained in private facilities away from the track as no
training facilities are available on UK racecourses. Although, on request,
a visiting horse can work once on the Ascot course the week before racing.
Visiting trainers are free to use the stabling and training facilities of their
choice. However, for the past few years many have successfully based
themselves in Newmarket, which is only two hours from Ascot.
There are 75 trainers and over 2,500 racehorses in Newmarket and some
stables have been reserved for foreign visitors at the historic Abington Place
in Bury Road.
These stables have the use of turn-out paddocks and have direct access to the
Bury Side gallops, including Warren Hill and Long Hill. Previous successful
occupants of these stables include Agnes World (Japan), Jealous Again (USA),
and Choisir, Miss Andretti, Takeover Target, Scenic Blast and Black Caviar
(all Australia).
The gallops are owned by Jockey Club Estates under management of William
Gittus together with Training Grounds Manager Nick Patton and a staff of 24
heathmen. They cover an area of approximately 2,500 acres (1,000ha) and
provide 50 miles (80.47km) of turf gallops and canters as well as 15 artificial
tracks totalling some 13 miles (21km).
