Writing the City Summer Camps for Youth

Writing the City Summer Camps for Youth Join Steve Carlson for Writing the City – a unique writing camp that challenges young writers to use the City of Lancaster as inspiration for short works of fiction and nonfiction. This is Writing the City’s third year! Each day begins with a warmup exercise followed by an introduction to a writing concept or genre. From there, students write in locations around the city, share work and receive editing advice and support from the instructor. Each session is limited to six students.

Classes are fun and lively! Over the past two summers, students have crafted works at Buchanan Park, Franklin & Marshall College, Central Market, downtown art galleries, Penn Square, Binns Park, Musser Park, Lennox Lane, Tellus360’s green roof, From Here to Timbuktu, Chestnut Hill Café, the ShreinerConcord Cemetery, St. James Episcopal Church Cemetery, the Lancaster Convention Center and various outoftheway spaces in the city. Students write based on or inspired by personal experience, eavesdropped dialog, characters they see about town, location, historical Lancaster, found objects, fine art and more. Students also create literarybased art installations using various media. Each weeklong session is open to current fifth through eighth grade students and in addition to fiction and nonfiction, students will be led through activities and projects which will use language and the creative word in novel and new ways. Chalk stories in the park, stickynote fiction, plasticegg stories and popsiclestick literature are examples that were hits among campers last summer. Meeting locations include Buchanan Park (Monday), Chestnut Hill Cafe (Tuesday) and Steinman Park (Wednesday Friday). With the exception of Monday’s Buchanan Park/Franklin and Marshall Campus day, pick up is at the Lancaster Public Library Parking lot. Exact content for each week will be determined after registration is complete. Discounts for multisession registrants and siblings are available and every effort will be made to adjust content should students register for more than one session.
