2014 - 2015 Annual Report
From the ITE Leadership
The 2014-2015 year has been a year of transition from our previous leaders, Christina Dube
and Curt Harrington. Through our research, our student chapter was able to attend and participate in
the SaferSim Summit, TRB, and many other conferences across the country. These conferences have
been a chance for us to become a closer group of colleagues and friends as well as helping us to professionally expand our professional network to other universities, student chapters and public/private
agencies. UMassITE Student Chapter members have represented the program exquisitely, exceeding
all of our goals and expectations for this year.
In addition to our student’s accomplishments, the chapter was happy to become officially recognized as a Graduate Student Organization (GSO) which enables us to procure funds from the campus, which helped support our 16th Annual Tech Day which was held in conjunction with the Student
Symposium. The event was a smashing success, which allowed professionals and students to enjoy a
compelling technical program and a networking opportunity afterward at a fun trivia event.
The next year will be exciting and challenging as the chapter will undergo yet another transition in leadership. We are supremely confident that under the mentorship of the outstanding faculty
here at UMass, the new leaders will pick up right where we left off.

The 16th Annual Technical Day was combined with this year’s Student Symposium. Three schools
from the New England area attended the event: UConn, UMass Lowell and UMass Amherst. The day consisted of a student oriented program which kicked off with a professional and student interactive working
lunch. The discussion specifically examined job skills to have for prospective entry positions within the
field of transportation engineering. Two concurrent student research presentation sessions were given followed by a student poster competition. The program was topped off with the annual Boyer Lecture given by
former UMass Amherst Alumni and current Virginia Tech Professor, Kevin Heaslip, as he presented his
research on “How a Wirelessly Charged Driverless Car Can Change Everything.” The Jane F. Garvey/
UMass ITE Transportation Leadership Award was given to Ruth Bonsignore. Professor Heaslip received
the Distinguished Alumni award and Vice-President, Craig Schneider, received the Student Service Award.
The evening concluded with a networking event in which students, professors and professionals played
transportation themed trivia at a local establishment. UMass ITE provided attending company representa-
tives with flash drives containing resumes of students attending the event.

Pedestrian Safety Projects
As of the 2013-2014 report, the UMass student chapter was in first place in a national competition sponsored by Carmanah Traffic, that encouraged universities to upload a picture or video to their
Facebook page with a caption that explained why the pictured crosswalk was dangerous. The winner
of this contest would receive a free solar rectangular rapid flashing beacon crosswalk system.
After becoming 1 of 3 finalists, UMassITE won the final round of voting and received the flashing beacon crosswalk system. Physical Plant installed the signage after the end of the 2014 school year.
The campus was so happy with how the system was being used that they installed a second one before
the beginning of the 2015 school year at their own expense. The campus is considering installing more
but is being careful not to install too many that drivers will no longer respect them.
In addition to the crosswalk project, the student chapter assisted a group called “Walk This
Way” in data collection. The group seeks to reduce noise and litter by students specifically in the neighborhood near the Southwest Residential Area. The student chapter continues to seek ways to leverage
their expertise for the benefit of the campus.

#ITEYearInReview
The student chapter has fully embraced social media and has used it to connect students with alumni,
professionals, and organizations. By staying active on Twitter and on other social media fronts,
UMass ITE has been able to stay current on real-time transportation news, jobs, contests, and more; it
also allows us to chronologically store and recall important information and events for our group.
Below are some of the highlights from our #ITEYearInReview.
