DELI MAN
D: Erik Greenberg Anjou | USA | 2014 | 91 min | STC
Featuring: Fyvush Finkel, Jerry Stiller, Larry King, Zane Caplansky and Ziggy Gruber
“A tasty chronicle of Jewish delis.” – New York Post
Enjoy more than 160 years of tradition
served up by the Jewish deli owners,
operators and fanatics who are keeping
hot pastrami hot and a culinary must.
Erik Greenberg Anjou’s film explores
Jewish culture as it reflects the heart of
a vital ethnic history. In Houston, Texas,
third-generation deli man Ziggy Gruber
has built arguably the finest delicatessen
restaurant in the U.S., Kenny & Ziggy’s.
His story—augmented by the stories
of iconic delis such as Caplansky's, Katz’s,
2nd Avenue, Nate ‘n Al, Carnegie, and the
Stage—embodies a tradition indelibly
linked to its savory, nostalgic foods.
Indulge in the deli foods you love and
learn about the traditions that make
deli one of America’s great cuisines.
Zane Caplansky will participate in Q&As
on Saturday, June 20, at 6:00 p.m. and
Sunday, June 21, at 5:30 p.m. Deli food
samplings will also be available at these
two screenings.
Opens on Friday, June 19—see website
and listings for dates and showtimes.
(DIS)HONESTY—THE TRUTH ABOUT LIES
D: Yael Melamede | USA | 2015 | 90 min | STC
“Entertaining and razor-sharp smart.” – Indiewire
Lying gets easier the more you do it—
that is, until you get caught. And it
turns out we all lie a lot more than we
think, as Duke University professor
and “dishonesty guru” Dan Ariely has
discovered through his behavioural
research, which also suggests that lying
to ourselves and others can have
major consequences for society at large.
In Ariely’s illuminating workshops,
we discover that it’s not always the larger
lies that can have dire consequences—it’s
also the little white ones. His “fudge
factor” theory looks at how we can justify
our lies according to what might be
considered “morally acceptable.” From
marketing scams to financial corruption,
doping in sports to affairs of the heart,
(Dis)Honesty delves into a considerable
underside of human nature. Filmmaker
Yael Melamede creates a fascinating
and insightful inquiry into why people lie
and its very real effects on both a personal
and economic level. Kathleen Mullen,
Hot Docs
Director Yael Melamede will participate
in Skype Q&As on Saturday, June 6, at
7:00 p.m. and Sunday, June 7, at 8:45 p.m.
Opens on Friday, June 5—see website
and listings for dates and showtimes.
THE GREAT MUSEUM
D: Johannes Holzhausen | Austria | 2014 | 94 min | G
Winner—Caligari Film Award, Berlin International Film Festival 2014
“Wonderfully evocative.” – The Hollywood Reporter
Featuring unprecedented access
to an influential and multi-faceted
institution, The Great Museum
reveals the inner-workings of Vienna’s
Kunsthistorisches Museum, one
of the most important art institutions
in the world. Widely known as the
art palace that houses paintings by
Rembrandt, Diego Velasquez, Pieter
Brueghel, Peter Paul Rubens and
Caravaggio, among many other canonical
works, the museum also features
a remarkable and magnetic group of
dedicated employees. As the camera
follows the spacious rooms hosting some
of the world’s most valuable art works,
director Johannes Holzhausen reveals
a dynamic, reflective and fast-moving
institution that’s both adapting to
the marketing and funding realities of the
21st-century while remaining faithful
to its core mission.
In German, with English subtitles.
Opens on Friday, June 26—see website
and listings for dates and showtimes.
I AM BIG BIRD:
THE CAROLL SPINNEY STORY
D: Dave LaMattina, Chad N. Walker | USA | 2014 | 90 min | PG
Featuring: Frank Oz, Jim Henson and Caroll Spinney
“Thoroughly entertaining...a joy to watch.” – The Globe and Mail
I Am Big Bird tells the extraordinary story
of Caroll Spinney, the whimsical and
endearing man behind Sesame Street’s
beloved Big Bird and Oscar the Grouch.
While inspiring generations of kids for
more than 40 years, not much has been
known about the man inside the bird.
Now, with Spinney approaching 80, we
get to peek at how the magic was made.
With an epic love story, a life-changing
adventure in China and an almost-trip
to space aboard the Challenger, both
Caroll Spinney and his feathered friend
Big Bird have had some incredible
adventures and tragedies. Through an
extensive collection of home movies
and behind-the-scenes Sesame Street
footage, the filmmakers capture an
intimate portrait. If your heart warmed
to the big yellow bird that entertained
generations, your heart will melt in
this loving portrait of the creative genius
who brought him to life. Heather Haynes,

MAGICIAN: THE ASTONISHING LIFE
AND WORK OF ORSON WELLES
D: Chuck Workman | USA | 2014 | 94 min | STC
Featuring: Peter Bogdanovich, Orson Welles, Costa-Gavras, Jeanne Moreau, Martin Scorsese,
Richard Linklater, Steven Spielberg and Walter Murch
Nominee—Audience Choice Award, Chicago International Film Festival 2014
Official Selection, Telluride 2014
By Academy Award-winning director Chuck Workman
Magician: The Astonishing Life and Work
of Orson Welles looks at the remarkable
genius of Orson Welles and the enigma
of his career as a Hollywood star,
director and independent filmmaker.
Welles’ life was magical; he became
a musical prodigy at age 10, a director
of Shakespeare at 14, a painter at 16,
a star of stage and radio at 20 and had
romances with some of the most
beautiful women in the world, including
Rita Hayworth. His work was similarly
extraordinary, most notably Citizen Kane
—considered by many to be the most
important movie ever made—which he
created when he was only 25. In the
years following Citizen Kane, his career
continued to change as he made film
after film (some never finished, many
dismissed) and acted to earn
money to fund his own filmmaking.
Magician features scenes from
almost every existing Welles film
and rarely-seen clips from his
final unfinished works (The Other
Side of the Dream, The Deep,
and Don Quixote). Don’t miss
this illuminating portrait of a
cinematic legend.
Celebrate Welles’ centenary with an
Orson Welles double bill! See Magician:
The Astonishing Life and Work of Orson
Welles with F for Fake on Saturday,
June 20, at 1:00 p.m., and save. (See page
5 for details).
Opens on Friday, June 19—see website
and listings for dates and showtimes.
SUNSHINE SUPERMAN
D: Marah Strauch | USA, Norway | 2014 | 100 min | PG
Featuring: Cecilie Bull, Marah Strauch and John Long
“Exhilarating…a thrill ride.” – Indiewire
Sunshine Superman is a heart-racing
portrait of Carl Boenish, the father
of the BASE jumping movement, whose
early passion for skydiving led him
to even more spectacular feats of footlaunched human flight. Experience
Boenish’s jaw-dropping journey in life
and love, including the pinnacle
of his achievements when he and
wife Jean broke the BASE jumping
Guinness World Record in 1984 on the
Norwegian Troll Wall mountain
range. Told through a stunning mix
of archival footage shot by Boenish,
re-enactments and state-of-the-art
aerial photography, Sunshine Superman
will leave you breathless and inspired.
Co-presented by the Alpine Club
of Canada, Toronto Section
Opens on Friday, June 5—see website
and listings for dates and showtimes.
THE WOLFPACK
D: Crystal Moselle | USA | 2014 | 86 min | STC
Winner—Candescent Award, Tribeca Film Festival 2015
Sundance 2015 Grand Jury Prize winner
Six inseparable brothers shared a
unique life together in the isolated
world of their family’s Lower East Side
Manhattan apartment. Locked in
by their father for years, the brothers,
homeschooled by their mother, only
had movies to feed their imaginations.
Crafting elaborate costumes and
props, “The Wolfpack,” as they were
nicknamed, recreated and videotaped
scenes from their favourite films
for years before they were allowed
the freedom to go out. When the
charismatic and handsome brothers
finally do venture out into the streets
of New York, they cause quite a stir.
Dressed as characters inspired from
Reservoir Dogs, Pulp Fiction and
The Godfather, they travel to Coney
Island and much of New York for
the first time. With uncanny access,
director Crystal Moselle—who won the
Grand Jury Prize at Sundance for the
film—goes deep inside the family’s life,
interviewing the parents and brothers
while inserting haunting images of
archival home movies. Moselle captures
the siblings’ real and imaginary world
both inside and outside their apartment
walls as they dream of dating for the
first time and making their own movies
in an unchartered urban landscape.

“One fashion film you do not want to miss.”
– Marie Claire
Dior is arguably the most influential fashion house
in history, and for decades Christian Dior was the leading
fashion designer in the world. Following his explosive
films on Diana Vreeland and Valentino, director Frédéric
Tcheng offers another masterful exploration of a
towering fashion institution. In Dior and I, viewers enter
the storied world that is the House of Christian Dior
with a privileged, behind-the-scenes look at the creation
of Raf Simons’ highly anticipated first Haute Couture
collection as the iconic brand’s new artistic director. From
conception through to its ultimate exhibition, the
process is shown to be a true labour of love by the stoic
Simons and a dedicated, charming and often humorous
team of collaborators. Beautifully melding the everyday,
pressure-filled components of fashion with an elegant
reverence for the history of Dior, Tcheng’s colourful homage
to the seamstresses of the atelier is nothing short of magical.
In French, English, Italian and Flemish, with English subtitles.
In Orson Welles’ free-form documentary, the legendary
filmmaker gleefully engages the central preoccupation
of his career—the tenuous line between truth and illusion,
art and lies. Beginning with portraits of world-renowned
art forger Elmyr de Hory and his devious biographer, Clifford
Irving, Welles goes on a dizzying cinematic journey that
simultaneously exposes and revels in fakery and fakers
of all stripes—not the least of which is Welles himself.
Charming and poignant, F for Fake is an inspired prank
and a searching examination of the essential duplicity
of cinema.
Celebrate Welles’ centenary with an Orson Welles double
bill! See F for Fake with Magician: The Astonishing Life
and Work of Orson Welles on Saturday, June 20, at 3:15 p.m.

Saroyanland is a docu-drama focusing on the journey
of famous writer William Saroyan to the birthplace of his
Armenian family in Turkey in 1964.
The Armenian village Bagaran and the Turkish village
Khalikislak sit on opposite sides of the Armenian-Turkish
border, within eyesight and earshot of each other, in this
portrait of two neighbours.
Daringly experimental and violent, Titus Andronicus was
the smash hit of Shakespeare’s early career. Returning
to Rome from a war against the Goths, the general Titus
Andronicus brings Queen Tamora and her three sons
with him as prisoners of war. Titus sacrifices Tamora’s eldest
son to appease the ghosts of his dead sons, and his decision
to refuse to accept the title of emperor initiates a terrible
cycle of violence. Audiences will be on the edges of their seats
from the start to the grisly end.
Performed live on March 26, 2015, at the Globe Theatre.

a group of children from a Paraguayan slum that started
creating instruments out of garbage. Landfill Harmonic
is a beautiful story about the transformative power of
music, which also highlights two vital issues of our times:
poverty and waste pollution.
From BAFTA award-winning director Asif Kapadia (Senna),
Amy tells the incredible story of six-time Grammy-winner
Amy Winehouse—in her own words. Featuring extensive
unseen archive footage and previously unheard tracks, this
strikingly modern, moving and vital film shines a light on
the world we live in, in a way that very few can.
In English and Spanish, with English subtitles.
