Dear Parents
Our annual Go-Kart Races and the International Food Fair last Friday was a
huge success, primarily because of the wonderful support from everyone,
thank you! The Food Fair and the Go-Kart races far exceeded my expectations
this year. While I was overwhelmed last year by the magnitude of the event, I
made sure that I enjoyed the evening this year interacting with as many of our
parents as possible.
We refined the Go-Kart Races this year and the event ran very smoothly.
Thank you to all the parents who made sure that there was a go-kart available
for their class. We once again had a wonderful selection of go-karts ranging
from traditional to a six wheeled ‘BIS Tank’.
The racing was electrifying and every scholar from the youngest to the oldest gave it their all in an attempt
to win the prize for their Key Stage. While this is a fun activity, there certainly was a lot of competition and
it was great to see the classes rallying together in an attempt to win. Herewith the results from the Go-Kart

The winners of the Key Stage 1 and 2 groups received their prizes on the day of the races, thanks to our
Parents Association. The winners of the High School group will receive their prize from the Parents
Association on Tuesday this coming week.
With the increase in our scholar numbers, the Parents Association had to prepare a lot more food to ensure
that we did not run out of food on the evening. I would like to thank the Class Representatives and parents
for their help in ensuring that this food was prepared and ready to be served on the day. I was very
impressed with the decorations, it certainly set the tone for the food that was being sold but more
importantly I was amazed with the standard and taste of the food on sale. We also welcomed our local
Spar to this year’s Fair and I have to thank them for the generous donations. We look forward to working
closely in future years as well as eating more of the scrumptious food they prepared.
A big thank you to the Parents Association, under the leadership of Mrs Vanessa Dreyer for all the hard
work leading up to the Food Fair. The success of the Food Fair is a reflection of the time and dedication
that our Parents Association give to Blouberg International School. Thank you for everything that you do
for us!

Pre-Reception Pet Week
During week 10, the Pre-Reception classes have been learning about Pets. They have
done numerous art activities and even made a cat mask which they used during
fantasy play. They had a wonderful time climbing and chasing one another –
pretending to be cats and kittens. The students were also very brave and presented a
‘Show and Tell’ to their peers about their own pet that they have at home. All the
students were confident shared some very interesting information. You can be very
proud of yourselves, well done!

KEY STAGE 1 ARTS and CRAFTS
Every Thursday afternoon a small group of Year 1 and 2 students enjoy an hour of creativity
at the Arts and Crafts Club. During this time the students relax and use their creative skills
and talents to complete a variety of projects. Their first project was to make a mask. The
students were given free reign with glitter, sequins and feathers and they made masks that
would have been the highlight of a masked ball.
Other projects the students have enjoyed are foil art, paper mosaic, making an aquarium
and a felt picture. Next term we are looking forward to new and exciting projects.

Key stage 1 care about other children in need
As part of our social responsibility this term our Key Stage 1 students partnered up with
Paarl School, a special needs school in Durbanville, by collecting food to feed those in
need during the holidays.
Paarl School is a special school for children with neurological or brain disorders and specific
learning problems. It is a small school of just under 400 students. Approximately half the
students have exemptions from school fees due to their families financial situations. Of
these, 30 families live well below the breadline of less than R20 a day for their whole
family. These students receive sandwiches from the school every day during term time, but
during the weekends and holidays the parents need to provide meals and unfortunately
are not able to. These students go through a 10 day school holiday period with very few
meals.

Our Year 1 and Year 2 students collected an enormous amount of non-perishable food
items such as mealie meal, sugar, pasta, long life milk, canned food, flour, jam, peanut
butter, powdered soup, rice, 2 minute noodles, biscuits, oil and samp

Our Year Two Island Home Models
On Friday, 27th March our Year Twos were bursting with excitement when they
came to school with their materials to create and build their own island home
model, as we are learning about “Life on an Island”, specifically Madagascar, in
Geography at the moment. In class we have been looking at the differences
between living in Cape Town and living on an island and we have been looking at
how children’s lives in Madagascar are different to ours in South Africa. We have
been looking at the way of life there, which includes food, clothes, games, houses,
etc.
Our Year twos had to design and make their own island home in the classroom!

Foundation Stage Steering Wheel Race
This year it was decided that the Foundation Stage would run races holding a steering wheel on Founders Day, 20th March
2015. Starting with Pre-Reception and moving onto Reception, each class ran a boy’s and girl’s race as a heat. The excitement
was palpable as each group waited for Mr Matthee to start the race. The winning children from each race were entered into
a mixed final. Vrithi Maharaj from Miss Hahn’s class came first in the Pre-Reception final and Willow Duvenage from Mrs
Hartung’s class won the Reception Year final. The winning classes were presented with ice lollies from the PA and each child
received a fizzer for participating.

HABITATS & FOOD CHAINS
The students in Year 4 DW have been enthusiastic about digging for
organisms in their natural habitats. The students were required to create a
‘Food Web’ display and were very successful and presented various Food
Webs. I was impressed with their effort and creativity. Well done, super
stars!

Spirit
It has been lovely to share the spirit for our Protea’s.
We have loved wearing green and gold in support of
our cricketers and my students appreciated the regular

The Tennis teams enjoyed a productive season during the first term. For the
first time Blouberg International entered two teams into the Primary
Schools Tennis League. The tennis players were enthusiastic and tried their
best in every match.
They displayed good sportsmanship qualities as they encouraged each
other through the season. Our tennis players showed much progression and
we look forward to the forth term as they will compete in further matches.
Well done team and best of luck in term four’s fixtures.

The start of the 2015 cricket season was a very positive one.
The players have shown great improvement over a short period of time. Our
fielding was excellent majority of the time and our bowling is going from
strength to strength! When it came to batting we showed great courage and
mostly made very good score.
I feel positive about U/9 cricket and I'm sure we will have an even better end
of the year.

BIS U/11 CRICKET TEAM ENDS SEASON UNBEATEN
The U/11 cricket team of BIS ended the first half of the season unbeaten.
Although we had some easy wins there were also some tough games and
good schools we played against. Some of these schools include Van
Riebeeckstrand Primary, Elkanah, Parklands College and CBC.
Congratulations to these players for showing great team spirit and
sportsmanship.

Our U/13 cricket team played 6 matches during Term 1 and won 4 of them.
We are very proud of our team, especially with so many of them still U/11.
Our boys have grown in confidence and played very competitive cricket at all
times. We are gradually gaining strength in all aspects of the game and it has
shown in all the matches.
A big thank you and well done to all the U/13 boys for a very good season.
Thank you for all your hard work and enthusiasm. I am looking forward to
Term 4 for more good cricket. Thank you to our parents for always supporting
us in numbers.
