Good Luck Runners! Where in the world is Roanoke, Virginia? That’s a fair question. But to be honest, it’s not a question most people were asking, say nothing about answering. That’s one of the reasons we created the Blue Ridge Marathon. As runners and outdoor enthusiasts, members of the organizing committee knew that this was a special place. We built our lives around the outdoor attractions and quality of life. What better way to show them off than with a 26.2 mile “tour?” We started in downtown, home to restaurants, museums, the Roanoke Farmer’s Market and took the course directly to the Blue Ridge Parkway where runners could climb Roanoke Mountain and see for miles. Then we wound the course back toward the Valley, with another climb up Mill Mountain and a visit to the famous Roanoke Star. We dropped the course onto the Valley floor where the new greenway system is a 18 beautiful respite from the miles of climbing and descending. Next we thought we should show visitors the city’s world-class neighborhoods. So we wound the course through South Roanoke and up Peakwood, the marathon’s third major climb. From there it is back to downtown, and down the home stretch to the beautiful Elmwood Park, where our recovery zone awaits with massages, food, beer, exhibitors and more. Don’t miss our headliner Big Head Todd & the Monsters, gates open at 5pm on Saturday. Runner tickets are only $12 dollars. With all those climbs and descents creating more than 7,430 feet of elevation change, we also created a race that has more ups and downs than any other on-road marathon in the United States. After our 26.2 mile tour of the city, we believe you will know the answer when someone asks, “Where’s Roanoke, Virginia?” Have a great marathon! —Event Committee 2015 BLUE RIDGE MARATHON GUIDE 04.18.2015 Elmwood park AMPHITHEATER r o a n o k e , VA
