ISRAEL BECOMES A NATION
PART 2
May - August 2015
Because of the lawlessness of their tribal system, and the
threat of the coastal Philistines, Israel called for a King.
While Saul united the tribes, it was David who made
Jerusalem the capital and Solomon who made Israel a
blessing to other nations – but not for long. (+- 1020 BCE)

THE NATION DIVIDES
IN TWO
Upon Solomon’s death the kingdom divided in two –
a large northern kingdom (calling herself “Israel”) and
a smaller kingdom in the south (named ‘Judah’). Over
the next 200 years these two nations sometimes
helped one another and at other times waged war
against the other, they sometimes followed the ways
of God and were often led astray by their leaders.
When this happened God rose up prophets to warn
them and call them back to covenant-living. (922 BCE)
