Bamfield Shellfish Hatchery Assistant Nova Harvest Ltd. is seeking a summer student for the position of Hatchery Assistant to aid in the production of oyster seed. We are a young shellfish aquaculture company operating on the west coast of Vancouver Island in Bamfield, BC. Our principle focus is supporting development of the geoduck and oyster aquaculture industry. The position will involve infrastructure development, hatchery systems management, algae production and maintenance. Working within a small company allows opportunity for a successful candidate showing strong initiative to take on greater roles and responsibility. You will be working closely with management, and involved in all aspects of hatchery operations. The selected student will be expected to work a minimum of 30 hours per week for 14 weeks between May 1 and August 31, 2015. Hours can be irregular and may include evenings and weekends. Base compensation for the work term will start at $5040 with opportunity for production based bonus and subsidised accommodation. As we are a growing company, this position could lead to future long term employment. Qualifications and Skills: Essential: - Knowledge and experience with shellfish aquaculture, larval rearing and microalgae culture - Ability to follow directions, work independently and with a team - Attention to detail, good record keeping and excellent communication skills - Ability to lift 50 pounds Desired: - Previous work experience in a shellfish hatchery - Animal care experience - Familiar with water quality and water chemistry - Valid Class 5 Drivers Licence About Bamfield: Bamfield is an active, vibrant, west coast community.
