Year 2015 ISSUE 1 First Quarter 2015 dieZündkerze BMW Car Club of America Sonora Chapter Our last 2nd Thursday dinner at Reforma combined an informal car show at the event, and this photo taken by Julia Olsen-Peterson provides a pretty good view of our assembly before dinner. BMW Tucson’s Juan Carlos brought the new I3 for us to inspect; it’s the one with the Star Wars Stormtrooper color scheme in the back of this photo, parked near the entranceway to the patio. See a complete slide show of her images at http://tinyurl.com/lf4vugy Our new Vice-President, Kai Yu, brought his late-model M3 and took a bird’s-eye view video with his drone, equipped with a camera. During the festivities we heard from our longest-standing member (#0000), Chet Kingsbury. He told his story of becoming a BMW fanatic/owner/afficionado. It reminded me that we each have our own history of attaining “Bimmervana”. M O R E In my case, it started in 1956 with a ride in the “back seat” of a robins-egg blue bathtub Porsche. My parents and us kids were picnicking in the Schwarzwald and came upon a young German couple who had driven their 356A into a ditch. The rescue car was a very large BMW sedan (a 5xx, not sure which one) owned by a friend of my parents. The Porsche owner was so happy with getting his car on the road that he and his girlfriend offered my sister and I a ride. We squeezed into the back shelf and were treated to a fiveminute ride on the dirt roads of the forest. So began my affection for all things German and mechanical. G R A P H I C D E S I G N Today, my preference in automobiles and other mechanical things remains almost exclusively to things German or Austrian. Past automobiles included two MBs, a 230SL (should never have sold it) and a 240D five-speed which had a zero to 60 time of close to a minute. F R E E B I E S : Which leads to how I finally saw the light and began our run of Bay-Em-Vays. Betty was in the mood to replace her rice-burning hatchback and became enamored of a “cute” 320i she saw someone driving. Some of you may remember that the Jobst Family had the BMW dealership in Tucson in 1979. And that is where our family bought our first BMW. V I S I T To make a long story a bit shorter, I found that driving the four-cylinder 320i was way more fun than the 240D (I know, I know….what a shocker). W W W . D E S I G N F R E E B I E S . O R G The Stilwell Family had become the BMW dealer in Tucson (and also sold other marques, including the exotic Lagonda). The service manager would see me driving the diesel and beg me to try a Bimmer. One day, in 1983, I saw an E24 in burgundrot with a black interior. It was a 5-speed and the Stilwells had it marked down from the $40k sticker to something more reasonable. Apparently, a dark car with a dark interior and no auto trans was a tough sell in that price range. I bit. In those days River Road was way more curvy and the foothills twistys did not yet have flattened hills or speed bumps. And there was a lot less traffic. The test drive was spectacular. A month of negotiating led to a really screaming deal and the 633CSi was (and still is) mine. Since then, we have owned E28s, E30s, an E32, E34s, an E38, an E39 and an E46. The formers all achieving 200k+ miles and the latter three still in the stable with the E24. We talk occasionally about the new 435s and M5s and even dream about the B7 sitting on the dealer’s floor. The problem is that I can still fix most of the things that go wrong with the current brood, so find it hard to justify the expense. But, most hurtfully, I just can’t begin to exercise the potential that these newer models possess, given the erosion of my drivers skillsets. What to do…….. 5 BMW CCA-Sonoran Chapter Events UPCOMING EVENTS One of the most important factors in contributing to the club’s success is participation of its members. The network of all the physical “things” we have, which are embedded with electronics, software, sensors that are networked together is known as the Internet of Things. (1) (2) These things include your car. And your car is a computer. Your car may connect to applications and sensors via the internet. (3) (4) Think about the need for security in computers and cell phones. Your car’s networked systems could provide an entryway for hackers to take control of critical functions, like steering or brakes. It could be as simple as downloading a file with a virus to your phone, and connecting it via Bluetooth to your car system. For example, in the 2014 Prius, CNN Money reports that the radio systems are on the same network as the steering, brakes and tire pressure monitor .The need for computer security apparently hasn’t been on 2.6mm x 50mmbolts the mind of auto manufacturers, but it now needs to be. Owners of ‘next generation’ cars need to be aware [5] Haynes & Chilton manuals that there are security threats out there and definitely consider potential threats to the vehicle. This problem leaves 2 million cars open to remote unlocking. Even worse, BMW was not using encryption in at least some of its telematics and the VIN these cars is also exposed to hacker attack. Fortunately, BMW is working towards a fix for the immediate problem. And the good news in all this is that it’s not your everyday hacker who has the skills, time, and finances to develop their own electronics for hacking a car. However, you might want to take a look at this. (7) However, security experts are concerned that in the future, cars could be hacked and stopped from functioning. Imagine losing your brakes in traffic (8), or someone holding your new car for ransom. In the meantime, there are other security issues with car electronics. Progressive Insurance, for example, has provided USB/OBD2 dongles to track driving habits and assess insurance risk for individuals and businesses - this technology has been shown to be insecure and can be hacked to gain remote control of the auto. This device is in use in another 2 million cars. (9) It’s unfortunate that auto manufacturers are now playing “catch up” rather than taking on this issue proactively. As early as 2011, Car and Driver Magazine sounded an alarm, (10) and they weren’t alone or the first to do so. So it’s really up to the consumer to ask the right questions to protect your car from hacking.
