Fellowships are awarded on the basis of impressive achievement in the past and exceptional promise for future accomplishment. Dr. Lopes’ project is titled: "Being for Beauty: Aesthetic Agency and Value." A Distinguished University Scholar and Professor in the Department of Philosophy, Dr. Lopes works mainly in aesthetics and is a member of the UBC aesthetics group. His research focuses on pictorial representation and perception; the aesthetic and epistemic value of pictures, including scientific images; theories of art and its value; the ontology of art; and computer art and new art forms. Dr. Lopes earned his BA (Hons) at McGill University and received his DPhil from Oxford University in 1992. He joined UBC in 2000 and is the recipient of many awards such as the UBC Killam Faculty Research Prize. Board of Governors Meeting – June 2015 Research Awardee Profile David Sweet O.C. Professor of Oral Biological & Medical Sciences Faculty of Dentistry Medallion for Distinguished Service, Canadian Forces Canada's Chief of Defence Staff awarded Prof. David Sweet with the Medallion for Distinguished Service, the highest Canadian Armed Forces medal for civilian service. Dr. Sweet was honoured for his work in forensic odontology - the science of victim identification using teeth and dental charts. Professor Sweet and his colleagues at the Bureau of Legal Dentistry (BOLD) at UBC train Canadian police and military pathologists in the science of victim identification using teeth and dental records. Dr. Sweet is also the founder of BC-FORT, the 90-member B.C. Odontology Response Team, a trained group of responders that can be deployed to catastrophes in Canada or abroad where Canadians may have perished. Her Excellency Governor General Michaëlle Jean invested Dr. Sweet as an Officer of the Order of Canada in 2008 for his work in forensic science as a teacher, researcher and consultant. Prof. David Sweet graduated from UBC Dentistry (Doctor of Dental Medicine) in 1978. He maintained a private solo dental practice in Cranbrook, BC until 1984 when he was invited to return to UBC as a faculty member. Board of Governors Meeting – June 2015 Research Awardee Profile Peter Ostafichuk Professor of Mechanical Engineering Faculty of Applied Science 3M Teaching Fellow Society for Teaching and Learning in Higher Education Prof. Peter Ostafichuk has been recently named a 3M Teaching Fellow by the Society for Teaching and Learning in Higher Education (STLHE). STLHE, in partnership with 3M Canada recognizes exceptional contributions to teaching and learning at Canadian universities and selects up to ten Fellowships annually. Dr. Ostafichuk is deeply committed to a personalized and very human approach to engineering education. He was recognized as being “a catalyst for change in engineering education” for his innovative teaching approaches. His students’ projects compel them to design engineering solutions for society’s most pressing needs. Examples include a device to detect and remove landmines, a vehicle to rescue survivors of a natural disaster, and a mechanical chair to help persons with neurological diseases perform therapeutic exercises. Professor Ostafichuk grew up in Vernon, BC and received his PhD from UBC in 2004. UBC hired him as an instructor in the same year. He became a senior instructor in 2008, and then a professor of teaching in 2013. JUNE 2015 APPLIED SCIENCE - Civil Engineering Ventura, Carlos - Professor Dr. Ventura has been inducted as Fellow of the Engineering Institute of Canada (EIC) for his significant contributions to Engineering in Canada as a researcher and educator. The EIC annually recognizes outstanding engineers amongst the membership of its member societies. JUNE 2015 ARTS - Art History, Visual Art & Theory Smith, Tai - Assistant Professor Dr. Smith has been awarded the 2015 American Craft Council Emerging Voices Award in the Emerging Scholar category. The award is presented biennially in recognition and support of emerging talent in the field of contemporary craft. The award was granted based on her achievement in writing on the topic of craft to date, including various articles and her book: Bauhaus Weaving Theory (University of Minnesota Press, 2014). JUNE 2015 ARTS - Classical, Near Eastern, and Religious Studies Ahmed, Rumee - Assistant Professor Dr. Ahmed has been awarded External Faculty Fellowship at the Stanford Humanities Cente.This prestigious fellowship supports a nine-month residency at Stanford University for the academic year 2015-2016. It is awarded each year to ten scholars in the humanities to devote time to their research, with an acceptance rate of 2%. Professor Ahmed will be conducting research on his project, titled "Islamic Systematics: The Art and Science of Islamic Legal Reform." JUNE 2015 ARTS - Classical, Near Eastern, and Religious Studies Chaudhry, Ayesha S. - Assistant Professor & the Institute for Gender, Race, Sexuality and Social Justice Dr. Chaudhry has been awarded Fellowship at the Radcliffe Institute for Advanced Study at Harvard University. This prestigious fellowship supports scholars, policy makers, and artists in a nine-month residential program at Harvard University to pursue interdisciplinary research. It has an acceptance rate of 4%. Dr. Chaudhry will conduct research on her project, titled "Constructing a Feminist Shari'a: Re-imagining A'isha - the Messenger of the Prophet of God." JUNE 2015 ARTS - Philosphy Lopes, Dominic McIver - Professor Dr. Lopes is a recipient of 2015 Guggeheim Fellowship and is among---175 scholars, artists, and scientists in the US and Canada selected by the John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Foundation. Successful candidates are chosen from a group of over 3,100 applicants. These fellowship appointments are made on the basis of impressive achievement in the past and exceptional promise for future accomplishment. JUNE 2015 DENTISTRY - Biomaterials Ruse, Dorin - Professor JUNE 2015 DENTISTRY - Oral Health Sciences Boyd, Marcia - Professor (Emerita) Dr. Ruse was awarded the Couronne de la Personalité for 2014 from the Faculté de chirurgie dentaire, Univerité Paris V René Descartes. This award is bestowed on outside individuals for his or her impact on the research of the Faculté. Ruse was recognized for his long collaboration with research teams at the university (from 2002 to 2014), and for the quality of its publications, 17 in total. Dr. Boyd has been awarded a Member of the Order of Canada. Considered one of our country’s highest civilian honours, the Order of Canada was established in 1967, during Canada’s centennial year, to recognize outstanding achievement, dedication to the community and service to the nation. She is being recognized for her contributions to the field of dentistry and for her stewardship of the profession. JUNE 2015 MEDICINE - Pathology & Laboratory Medicine Krajden, Mel - Professor Dr. Krajden has been awarded the 2015 Genome British Columbia Award for Scientific Excellence from the LifeSciences BC. The award honours an individual, group or company located in B.C. that has received significant national or international recognition in the fields of genomics and one of the following in 2014: proteomics, bioinformatics or systems. JUNE 2015 MEDICINE - Medicine Levin , Adeera - Professor Dr. Levin is the winner of the Aubrey J. Tingle Prize for 2015 from the Michael Smith Foundation for Health Research from the LifeSciences BC The award recognizes a British Columbia clinician scientist or scholar practitioner whose work in health research is internationally recognized and has significant impact on advancing clinical or health services and policy research — as well as its uptake — to improve health and the health system in BC and globally. JUNE 2015 SAUDER SCHOOL OF BUSINESS - MIS Division Benbasat, Izak - Professor Dr. Benbasat is the winner of the 2014/15 Research Excellence Award (Senior Category) at the Sauder School of Business. Dr. Benabasat is recognized as the most productive and most cited scholar in Management Information Systems. JUNE 2015 SAUDER SCHOOL OF BUSINESS - Marketing Division Hoegg, JoAndrea - Associate Professor Dr. Hoegg is the winner of the 2014/15 Research Excellence Award (Junior Category) at the Sauder School of Business. Dr. Hoegg has an impressive publication record with papers appearing in the top journals of her field. JUNE 2015 SAUDER SCHOOL OF BUSINESS - Operations and Logistics Division Heaver, Trevor - Professor (Emeritus) Dr. Heaver has been awarded the 2015 Onassis Prize for Shipping as a joint recipient of the prestigious international award for life time contributions to the field. Heaver introduced courses on international shipping and logistics to the University of British Columbia in the 1960s and has conducted extensive research on the railway industry and transport policy as well as shipping and logistics. Heaver is widely recognized in the field of transport economics and logistics. JUNE 2015 SCIENCE - Earth, Ocean and Atmospheric Sciences Smith, Leslie - Professor Dr. Smith has been awarded the 2015 NSERC Synergy Award, category 2 (large companies), recognizing long term research collaboration between universities and industry. JUNE 2015 SCIENCE - Earth, Ocean and Atmospheric Sciences Andersen, Raymond - Professor Dr. Andersen is the 2015 recipient of The American Society of Pharmacognosy, Norman R. Farnsworth Research Achievement Award. This award, given in recognition of outstanding lifetime contributions to research in natural products chemistry, is the highest and most distinguished award given by the Society. JUNE 2015 SCIENCE - Mathematics Adem, Alejandro - Professor Dr. Adem has been honoured with the 2015 Jeffery-Williams Prize from the Canadian Mathematical Society. The Jeffery Williams Prize was inaugurated to recognize mathematicians who have made outstanding contributions to mathematical research. JUNE 2015 SCIENCE - Mathematics Li, Dong - Assistant Professor Dr. Li has been honoured with the The Coxeter-James Prize. The prize is awarded to recognize young mathematicians who have made outstanding contributions to mathematical research. JUNE 2015 SCIENCE - Chemistry Mehrkhodavandi, Parisa - Associate Professor Dr. Mehrkhodavandi has been awarded the 2015 Humboldt Research Fellowship for Experienced Researchers. This fellowship allows highly-qualified scientists and scholars from abroad to spend extended periods of research in Germany. JUNE 2015 SCIENCE - Chemistry MacLachlan, Mark - Professor Dr. MacLachlan has been awarded the 2014 Steacie Prize in natural sciences, Canada's top award for young scientists and engineers. The award recognizes Dr. MacLachlan's oustanding research and scholarly contributions to the field of supramolecular and inorganic chemistry. JUNE 2015 UBC-O APPLIED SCIENCE - School of Engineering Abbas, Milani - Associate Professor Dr. Milani has been named UBC Okanagan's 2015 Researcher of the Year in recognition of his significant contribution to research during the time of his appointment at the University. Dr. Milani has designed cutting-edge composite materials for Boeing and Bombardier, and he has partnered with NASA, Boeing and the US Naval Undersea Warfare Centre for his current research on nonconventional manufacturing simulation methods based on composite material models. JUNE 2015 LAW Reynolds, Graham J. - Assistant Professor Prof. Reynolds was the Faculty Coach of the Peter A. Allard School of Law Oxford Intellectual Property Moot team, which won the David Vaver Spirit of the Moot Award at the 13th Annual Oxford Intellectual Property Moot held between March 19-21, 2015. JUNE 2015 MEDICINE - Family Practice Avery, Granger - Clinical Professor Prof. Avery has been elected by the members of doctors of BC as president-elect of the Canadian Medical Association (CMA). He will serve as president-elect until August 2016, when he will take on the mantle of president during the CMA’s 149th annual meeting in Vancouver. JUNE 2015 MEDICINE - Biochemistry & Molecular Biology Cullis, Pieter - Professor Prof. Cullis received the Milton Wong Award for Leadership from the Life Sciences BC for 2015. This award is designed to recognize an individual outside the direct life sciences and biotechnology industry in British Columbia who has demonstrated a significant contribution to the development of the sector. JUNE 2015 SCIENCE - Earth, Ocean and Atmospheric Sciences Thompson, John - Adjunct Professor Prof. Thompson was awarded the Canadian Federation of Earth Sciences Mentorship Medal. The medal is given to exceptional earth scientists who have demonstrated the sustained and inspirational mentorship to colleagues, peers, and students. He was also the Director of EOAS Mineral Deposits Research Unit from 1991 to 1998. She is the First-year English Coordinator and holds a SSHRC Standard Research Grant to study eighteenth-century women and popular culture. JUNE 2015 ARTS - Journalism Gretsinger, Kathryn - Instructor I Prof. Gretsinger received the 2014/2015 UBC Killam Teaching Prize. She has been a lead instructor in the School’s Integrated Journalism Program. Her significant contribution to the International Reporting Program and the Reporting in Indigenous Communities Course was recognized. JUNE 2015 ARTS - Psychology Rawn, Catherine - Senior Instructor Prof. Rawn received the 2014/2015 UBC Killam Teaching Prize. Her research interests include team-based learning methods, the use of clickers in the classroom, student evaluations of teaching, program evaluation of TA Teaching Training, and social psychology. JUNE 2015 ARTS - Sociology Mawani, Renisa - Associate Professor Prof. Mawani received the 2014/2015 Killam Teaching Prize for Graduate Instruction. The award was given in recognition of her excellent graduate-level teaching. She was nominated through the Faculty of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies. JUNE 2015 DENTISTRY - Oral Biological & Medical Sciences Kanji, Zul - Clinical Assistant Professor Prof. Kanji was awarded the CDHA (Canadian Dental Hygienist Association) Excellence in Teaching Award for 2014. The award is given to a dental hygienist who is a CDHA educator member in a Canadian dental hygiene program to recognize his/her excellence in teaching contributions and innovations.
