Bonnyrigg Primary News Bonnyrigg Primary News ew August 2012 April 2015 bonnyrigg.mgfl.net Polling Station We have once again been told that Bonnyrigg Primary School will be used as a polling station for the General Election on Thursday 7th May. The school and nursery will be closed to all pupils on that day. Comic Relief We would like to say a massive thank you to all pupils and parents for making Red Nose Day a fantastic success at Bonnyrigg. The children had great fun dressing up and we were overwhelmed with the enormous amount of cakes handed in for sale. After selling all the red noses, contributions for dress down and all the cakes sold we made a grand total of £1264.98. This included a donation from the After School Club of £91.35. Well done everyone! Tuck Shop The children really enjoy having a tuck shop at school. However please let the children know that if they bring snack from home they should not also go to the tuck shop for food. They can buy juice. Anyone else should only be buying two items of food and one juice maximum. Care Inspectorate We were visited in the nursery recently by the Care Inspectorate who come in to nurseries to check that correct procedures etc are being followed. We are delighted to report that we were given a very favourable report with several very good’s and excellent’s. Well done to all the nursery staff. Sunny Weather As the weather is getting better please make sure your child has sun screen on before coming to school or a hat for protection. Many thanks Recent Events P5 History Project On Tuesday 31st March Primary 5 visited the Penicuik House Estate. This was the culmination of a term long I-movie project on Penicuik House which shaped this year's entry to the Bonnyrigg History Society's competition -"Midlothian Castles and Stately homes". Despite experiencing four seasons in one day, they all had a fantastic time getting a Head Lice tour of the ruined house and secret garden as well as completing a mini beast hunt and nest Please check your Unfortunately children’s heads building activities. Bonnyrigg did not win the competition but they learnt lots on a regular basis for head about our local history in thelice. process. P7 Maths Challenge On the 19th of March 2015 Primary 7 took part in a splendid Maths Challenge. There were two other schools competing who were Paradykes and Rosewell. In the morning we all took part in problem solving where we were paired up and had to go round tables working out difficult problems. We all had a great time. Then we all split up into our teams which were the relay team and the poster team, everyone else had a great time at science. The maths relay was a fantastic experience for everyone involved. It was made even better when P7 won it for Bonnyrigg winning by a margin of 65 points. It didn’t stop there with the poster team coming out on top as well. It was a great day out and everyone loved it. Lost Property Car Park We have 3 pairs of children’s glasses and 1 pair of adult’s glasses in the school office. If you think they may belong to your child or yourself please call in to the office to claim them. Thank you We would appreciate if you do not park or double park in the school car park to drop off or pick up your child. Please do not walk through the car park with children either. We have had recent scares where children have been nearly knocked down, one of which was a result of bad parking. Outdoor Learning As you may have noticed, we have a new container in our playground. This is part of our playground renovation project. The container is going to be used to store loose parts for outdoor play for the whole school. We would really appreciate any help that you could offer in filling the container. The kind of loose materials we require are: tyres, tarpaulin, materials for den building, rope, old guttering, plastic flower pots, planks of wood, crates, palettes, old pipe, small logs and tree stumps, wheelbarrows and old pots and pans. Mrs Bowman and Mrs Whiteman, our parent helpers on The Outdoor Learning Committee will be ensuring that we get a variety of loose parts so please email the school before bringing anything in on [email protected]. Dogs Sports Day It was mentioned in a previous newsletter regarding dogs near the school. Please DO NOT leave your dog tied up outside the school gates. A number of children and parents are scared and do not want to come near the gates. Behaviour Policy Survey Thank you to the 195 people who took the time to complete our Behaviour Policy survey. This, along with feedback from staff and pupils, will help inform changes to our current policy. Just a reminder that our 1st choice for our sports day will be Monday 25th May with the 2nd choice being Wednesday 3rd June. If the sports day gets cancelled we will notify parents by text. Gold Award Treat This year we have made some changes to our Gold Award Treat. Rather than working towards a treat at the end of the school year in June we are organising shorter slots at the end of each term. This is linked to our Good to be Green system in each classroom. Children who have kept their cards on green, displaying good behaviour for the term, will receive an hour slot. Those who have had their cards turned due to any misbehaviour receive a shorter time of their chosen activity. Children enjoyed their Gold Award Treat at the end of last term and are now working towards this term’s award day. Staffing We were sorry to say goodbye last term to Miss Gray, Mrs Hogg, Miss Donaldson and Ms Tweedie. We will also be saying goodbye to Miss Lamb at the end of term, in July, as she will be taking a career break to go travelling. We look forward to welcoming our New Depute Head Teachers, Mr Allan Fleming and Ms Caroline Findlay who start with us within the next few weeks. Nursery News Welcome back everyone. We hope you've had a wonderful Easter break and are ready for another busy and exciting term! We will begin the term by looking at signs of Spring and learning about animal and plant life-cycles. The bulbs planted by the children in October are in full bloom and we are looking forward to more opportunities to dig and plant in the garden. Holiday Sheets Thank you in advance for taking the time to fill out a holiday sheet with their child. It's lovely to be able to talk with the children about all the things they've enjoyed doing over their Easter break. Sunny Days Just a small reminder that as the days become warmer children may benefit from having . some sunscreen applied before they come to nursery, they may also wish to wear a hat. Please remember to write your child's name on any hats or other clothing (we seem to be accumulating a large array of un-named garments). Calling All Keen Gardeners! We would be delighted if any parents would like to be involved in preparing, planting or maintaining our small vegetable garden with the children. As the weather continues to improve this would provide an excellent opportunity to enjoy some sunshine and help the children learn about the natural world. Helpers Thank you to all of the parents and grandparents who have signed up to help us over the last term, it's been lovely to have more adults in the nursery. The sign up sheets are in the foyer, please feel free to sign your name against a day or date. We understand that many parents are limited in the time they can offer due to other commitments and we are delighted to welcome you regularly or on a one-off basis.
