Bookham & District Newsletter May 2015 Bookham & District U3A May Newsletter Announcements Made at the May Meeting Neil welcomed three new members at the meeting: Peter Higgins and Clive and Judy Horton. The Chairman reminded members to collect their copies of Senior Moments and clarified the role of the electronic copy of Senior Moments. All U3A members who have an email address are advised of the availability of Senior Moments on the website; this includes those who have asked for a paper copy which continue as normal. Receiving the email notification does not stop the distribution of the paper copy! Neil stated that it was important that the attendance sheets were accurately completed. This helps with meeting planning and is an important issue if we were ever to need to evacuate the building. Please make sure you name is ticked off when you arrive, especially if you enter by the rear door. The International Wine & Food festival is fully booked and Jan Dicker has a waiting list. If you have tickets and cannot now attend please contact Jan so that these may be reallocated. Her number is 01372 452251 and her email address is [email protected]. Please note that her email address in the recent copy of Senior Moments is incorrect. Village Week – Coral Wabe, on behalf the Bookham U3A is organising a Village Week Bridge Evening on Thursday 25th June. Tickets, costing £60 per table, are available from Jan Dicker; her contact details are above. The event is open to anyone, not just U3A members, and the price of £60 per table includes supper. Neil drew attention to the sign up sheets for new groups, details of which are included later in this email. He also mentioned that the next copy of Senior Moments will contain renewal forms for 2015/16 membership and that members should renew within a one month period, not two months as was the case previously. The renewal form will also shortly be available on the website. Neil also thanked Sheila Pomfret for the hard work she puts into organising the theatre trips, holidays and other visits. Mayday saw 40 or so U3A members visit the Olympic Park and the 'Cathedral of Sewage', another very enjoyable day which I hope to record and illustrate in the next copy of Senior Moments. Neil referred to the huge amount of work that Sheila puts in on behalf of us all and asked if any other member would be prepared to suggest and organise a Christmas outing this year. Please contact Neil if you could do this. The Military History group are organising a visit to the Imperial War Museum on 23th Jul leaving Bookham at 10.00hr. The cost will be £11 and the visit is open to all. Finally, lost property. A black backrest was left behind today. It has been left on the coat stand in the Barn Hall. Speaker Neil introduced the speaker, John Reuther who gave a very entertaining talk on “Bugs, Plagues and Pestilence". It was just as well that lunch had been digested and dinner was some way off! Next month’s speaker is Steve Whiteway, who is Managing Director of Epsom Coaches and has been with the company for over 34 years. Steve is also a director of the wider RATP Group in the UK and has held the post of President of the UK Confederation of Passenger Transport on two occasions; he is also a fellow of the Chartered Institute of Logistics and Transport. Steve is well known for his active participation in local affairs and for the community role that Epsom Coaches plays, supporting local events and charities. Steve has led Epsom Coaches to become one of the largest employers in Epsom with over 360 staff and a highly respected business with a reputation for excellence that stretches back to 1920. Steve will be giving us an insight into the long history of Epsom Coaches and its development as one of the leading passenger transport operators in Europe. And finally....... It being May Day and not being able to find a May Pole to dance around, Sheila couldn't contain herself at the Olympic Park! Thank you Sheila for a great day out!
