Australian Women in 2014.

Anita Heiss is the author of non-fiction,
historical fiction, commercial women’s
fiction, poetry, social commentary
and travel articles. She is a regular
guest at writers’ festivals and travels
internationally performing her work
and lecturing on Indigenous literature.
She is an Indigenous Literacy Day
Ambassador and a proud member of
the Wiradjuri nation of central NSW.
Anita is a role model for the National
Aboriginal Sporting Chance Academy and
an Advocate for the National Centre of
Indigenous Excellence. She is an Adjunct
Professor with Jumbunna Indigenous
House of Learning, UTS and currently
divides her time between writing, public

WELCOME
Your transfer to the Amalfi coastline
from Naples is arranged to collect you
at 1pm. It is one and a half hours until
you arrive at Villa Maria so enjoy
an opportunity to get to meet your
writing tour group as you absorb
the scenes and sites you pass. Villa
Maria, that special sanctuary, sitting
on top of bustling Ravello is waiting
for you.
You are met on arrival at the town
entry and your luggage will be
transported for you. Absorb the
atmosphere, take your time on the
uphill walk past cafes, shops, nooks
and crannies leading to Villa Maria. You
will be rewarded with great views of
mountains plunging into the sea and a
welcome drink on arrival. You are now
the guest of Mr Polermo and his family.

DAY two
WEDNESDAY 22ND APRIL 2015
ITINERARY
Daily breakfast is served in the dining
room and there is free time until your
first classes commence at 10am.
Session 1 - Defining your story –
writing your synopsis is the first step
in any book writing process. Once you
have nailed your story synopsis then
the writing will be much easier. In this
session you will define your synopsis,
then your 300 word abstract and your
elevator pitch.

• There are several walking trails that
are easily accessed from Villa Maria.
• Explore the Ravello town square
and enjoy a leisurely lunch and local
exploration.
10am to 1pm Writing class.
SUGGESTIONS
• Lounge on the sun beds and read.
• Retire early and recover from
travelling so you are ready to write
in the morning.
7.30pm Welcome dinner at Villa Maria
with four courses and accompanying
wines.
Settle into your room in the
picturesque Italian hillside
overlooking the rows of citrus
orchards, walking trails and the
sparkling coastline. We gather
again at 6pm on the terrace
to enjoy a champagne cocktail

THURSDAY 23RD APRIL 2015
ITINERARY
Session 2 - Writing an authentic
human experience - this session aims
to get the creative juices
flowing while learning the
importance of focusing on
your senses and emotions
in all your writing. We will
make use of the physical
environment to tap into
what your characters (and
what your readers) will
see, taste, touch, hear and
smell.
10am to 1pm Writing class.
Lunch is provided today.
At 2.30pm there is an optional
trip to Amalfi to experience
one of the most famous Italian
holiday destinations pulsing
with sophisticated glamour.

FRIDAY 24TH APRIL 2015
ITINERARY
Session 3 - Creating believable
characters and the role of the
‘method writer’ – this session
will consider what readers are
looking for in characters and how
you can create those you would
like to hang out with in real life,
those you can empathise with,
and those you may want to kill!
Putting yourself in the mind of
the character is essential for
authentic writing.

10am to 1pm Writing class.
4.00pm Cooking Class with
evening meal.
Energetic Chef Vincenzo is
knowledgeable, charismatic, and a
wonderful host and most entertaining
cooking teacher. Even those who do
not cook usually will have a great time
and the experienced will learn new
skills and use the recipes at home. You
certainly get to know people when you
cook with them and share food!

DAY five
SATURDAY 25TH APRIL 2015
ITINERARY
Session 4 - Writing about place –
how to create settings your readers
feel like they’ve visited through your
story and ones that will inspire them
to travel to!
10am to 12 midday Writing class.
SUGGESTIONS
• Book a Tour – Head to Pompeii to
see the havoc that Mount Vesuvius
reaped on it in AD 79. Tour the
UNESCO-listed excavations, seeing
fossils and well-preserved ruins while
hearing the horrors that befell this
intriguing ancient city.

SUNDAY 26TH APRIL 2015
ITINERARY
Session 5 – Plotting your story – most
writers are pansters (they fly
by the seat of their pants when
writing) but this workshop
will show you how plotting
aids the creative process as
well as getting your story
finished! You can still be
organic in your storytelling
and meet your deadlines.

MONDAY 27TH APRIL 2015

Session 6 – Why you need other
people in your writing process –
Many writers talk about the process
as a lonely one, but this session
shows how all writers need to
engage with other people in terms
of their research – conducting
interviews, reading widely, and
seeking feedback on drafts from
‘relevant’ bodies.

TUESDAY 28TH APRIL 2015
ITINERARY
Session 7 – The writers tool kit –
agents, publishers, building your
brand as a writer and the importance
of social media.

Farewell dinner – Tonight we
celebrate our achievements and
reflect on our week in Ravello
at a four course private dining
experience.
10am to 12 midday Writing Class
then 1:1 sessions to follow at
20 minute intervals.
