Black History Month
Black History Month has always been a special moment to remember the contribution of Black men
and women. Each year we remember their sacrifices and celebrate their achievements, but this
year is particularly poignant and warrants a particular reflection on two events of 2012.
The year began with the guilty verdict in the Stephen Lawrence murder case. This was the most
high-profile, unsolved, racially motivated murder in living memory. I was the same age as Stephen
and I spent my first adult years watching in shock as his family were denied justice. But I was not
alone. The case had penetrated British society – the anti racism movement had moved from the
margins to the mainstream.
Thousands united together – black and white, young and old – not only to bring two of Stephen’s
killers to justice but to bring about real change to the institutions that had let Stephen’s family
down so badly. So as there is finally some semblance of closure to the case, let us use this year’s
Black History Month to acknowledge one of the greatest contemporary contributors to the black
community’s story in Britain: Doreen Lawrence, mother of Stephen and tireless campaigner for
justice.
The Olympics sprinkled glitz and glamour onto 2012 and for Britain it was a true cultural
reawakening. Our own Haringey boxer, Nicola Adams, smashed through glass ceilings to win the
first ever Olympic gold in female Boxing. Somali-refugee Mo Farah, who came to Britain when he
was just 8 years old, ran a lap of honour draped in the British flag with 80,000 British people of all
races, ages and religions cheering their fellow Briton. The poster-girl of the Olympics could not be
more representative of our country in the 21st Century: Jessica Ennis, a mixed race woman from
Sheffield, ran, jumped and threw her way to Heptathlon Gold. They are the stars in a country that
is increasingly at ease with its multicultural self. Future Black History Months will remember their
achievements this year fondly so let us use this year to remember the trailblazers who combated
discrimination and prejudice in sport to light the path. Let us use this month to honour Colin
Jackson, John Barnes and Tottenham’s own Walter Tull and the sacrifices they made and the
summits they achieved for Britain and for the wider black community.
The strap line of the Olympics was to ‘inspire a generation’. The same could be said of Black
History Month. Have a great October.

The 2012 Olympics demonstrated to the world that London is a vibrant, diverse and proud city.
Team GB’s successes included unbelievable performances from many black athletes – and they will
go down in history as part of our greatest team. A particular highlight was the performance from
Nicola Adams, who became the first women ever to win gold in boxing, and of course, Mo Farah’s
epic double!
The contribution of black men and women to Haringey, London and the UK in general also cannot
be underestimated. The UK has the second-largest black population in Europe, and it’s so
important that the population at large are aware of the history, struggles and successes of black
men and women. This is why so I’m very glad to be celebrating black history month, and to have
this dedicated time to reflect on black history, culture and contributions to our society.
Particularly on the back of the Olympics, it’s clear that this is going to be a very exciting and
positive black history month, and I encourage everyone to get involved, learn and celebrate!

Black History Month is an important celebration in Haringey. It creates a dedicated time when we
can reflect on, celebrate and show appreciation for the amazing contribution that the black
community has made to society throughout our history. It allows us to demonstrate the strength
of our vibrant community which celebrates diversity and the value we attach to learning about
each other and from each other.
In Haringey this year, Black History Month will be as action packed, as vibrant and as meaningful
as ever with a whole range of events taking place. I hope you will join me in welcoming in Black
History Month and getting involved in the activity so that together we can celebrate all that the
black people have contributed to make Haringey the place it is today.

each year I am delighted to see the very special celebrations of the achievements of our black
community. Over the past year we have seen a lot to celebrate, and I look forward to seeing many
of you at taking part in the range of diverse events across the borough. Whether it’s attending an
exhibition at your local library, getting interactive at a drumming performance, or listening to one
of our many local speakers share their experiences, there really is something for everyone. With a
huge selection of children’s events taking place, Black History Month 2012 will also be an exciting,
vibrant opportunity to celebrate our generation of incredibly talented young people.

MAKING FREEDOM :The Life of Venture Smith
Exhibition
Marcus Garvey Library
An exhibition on the life of an enslaved African
who successfully gained his own freedom and
established a family dynasty in Connecticut,
USA, in the age of the American Revolution.
Venture Smith (1728-1805) originally named Broteer Furro, was a royal prince
from West Africa who was kidnapped when he was a child and sold into
slavery. He was taken to the US by the slave
trade and after 30 years bought his way out of
slavery. Smith was one of the few slaves who
sought liberation by purchasing his own
freedom and those of his wife and four
children. He went on to accumulate property
and wealth. His life story was published in
1798. Seven years later he died at the age of
77 and was buried in Connecticut.

A love letter to a style of music that
should educate, entertain and even
inspire.
Lovers Rock, often dubbed 'romantic reggae' is a uniquely black British sound
that developed in the late 70s and 80s against a backdrop of riots, racial
tension and sound systems.
Lovers Rock served both as a tool of empowerment for its fans – a group made
up of mostly young black men and women, first generation Brits, the children of
immigrants primarily from countries of the Caribbean, searching for identity and
a style they could claim as their own; it also provided healing for that same
generation, in a time when the country was facing extreme racial polarity, and
blacks especially were victims of institutionally-sanctioned prejudice and acts
of violence by white racists.

Our Time Has Come
Our Time Has Come is a Teacher Twilight
event introducing a new classroom teaching
and learning resource aimed at Key Stages
3-4 history and citizenship students.
Inspired by materials in the Bernie Grant
and Taken for Granted project archives, the
resource uses the election of four Black
MPs in 1987 as a start-point from which to
consider minority ethnic representation in
Parliament. This event is facilitated by staff
from Bishopsgate Institute where the Bernie
Grant archive is held.

Robin Walker is giving a lecture on an
important art form: Modern Jazz. The
Modern Jazz era represents the period
when jazz became music for listening as
opposed to music for dance. Beginning with
the Holy Trinity of Dizzy Gillespie, Charlie
Parker, and Thelonious Monk, modern jazz
became an increasingly underground art

artefact, as the Unlucky Mummy unravels the audience hears

A love letter to a style of music that
should educate, entertain and even inspire.
Lovers Rock, often dubbed 'romantic reggae' is a uniquely black
British sound that developed in the late 70s and 80s against a
backdrop of riots, racial tension and sound systems.
Lovers Rock served both as a tool of empowerment for its fans – a
group made up of mostly young black men and women, first
generation Brits, the children of immigrants primarily from countries
of the Caribbean, searching for identity and a style they could claim
as their own; it also provided healing for that same generation, in a
time when the country was facing extreme racial polarity, and
blacks especially were victims of institutionally-sanctioned
prejudice and acts of violence by white racists.

Revamp the Ramp
Saturday 13 October 2012
Fountain Area Residents Association have organised an opening day
celebration of a local community garden, that is under development on the
site of the former walkway and ramp leading through from Braemar Rd to
Brunel Walk, in Seven Sisters N15.
Activities include planting of the gardens, light refreshments, a couple of
stalls and children's entertainment, before the grand opening of the garden
with Local Councillors and guests. This will be followed up in the eve from
6pm with local bands performing in the Fountain Pub on West Green Road
(just around the corner).
An actively fun day and evening with a chance for local residents and their
friends to meet neighbours and socialise!
