Notes from the
Editor:
Here we are; right in the
heat of summer and I am loving it. Every
year we host a huge Independence Day
bash for our family and friends and that
takes a lot of preparation. We are
expecting about 50 people which may
not seem like much but
I do most of the cooking and believe you
me, 50 is a lot when you are the one
feeding them.
I love being outdoors as much as
possible which means not so much
crocheting.
We have been working a garden spot at
my in-laws’ house. It is growing pretty
well but the weather has been so hot
that I haven’t wanted to keep the grass
hoed between the rows. Things have
been a little slow in the crochet world
around here but now that we are looking
at less than 6 months for Christmas I am
starting to think fall/winter.
Here at Entwine we are gearing up for
the colder weather with patterns and
lots of great ideas to keep you warm this
winter.

Crochet is an easy hobby to learn and with
just a little practice, you’ll be making items
such as hats, scarves, blankets and more!
Most patterns use the basic stitches so you’re
in luck! Get ready to CROCHET!
How to hold your hook:
There are two common ways to hold your hook a) pencil and b) knife style
Try both holds and see which one you prefer.
These are not the only two, but the most common.
How to chain: (ch)
Each pattern will start with a specific chain amount. Sometimes the chain amount
will be 2 and sometimes it may be 250 (blanket or scarf are examples). It's really
easy--but practice and make it consistent.
*Tip: work chains LOOSELY, and not too tight.
How to Slip Stitch: (sl st)
Slip stitch is a common stitch used within many patterns.
It's commonly used to join a ring (hats are a great example), or used as a stitch
without height.
Push hook through stitch as directed in pattern. Here, instructions would read:
'Ch4, sl st in the first chain to form a ring.'
So, ch4 and then push your hook through the first chain that you created and pull
the yarn back through. You will have 2 stitches on the hook. Take the 2nd stitch you
just created and pull it through the first. Sl st complete.
How to single crochet: (sc)
The single crochet stitch is very basic and very common. It is important that you
learn to make this stitch consistent: not too tight and not too loose. If you make it
tight, your hands will hurt. If you make it too loose, it will look sloppy and it will be
hard to match your gauge and look of a pattern.
Push your hook through the stitch and yarn over. Pull the yarn back through, you
will have 2 loops on the hook now. Yarn over and pull through both loops.
SC complete.
How to half double crochet: (hdc)
Yarn over, push you hook through the stitch, yarn over again. Pull the yarn through
the stitch and you will have 3 loops on the hook. Yarn over and pull through all 3
loops. Hdc complete.
How to double crochet: (dc)
The double crochet stitch is one of the main stitches. It is a great way to add length
to a project, and is a more 'open' stitch and not tight as compared to a single crochet
stitch.
Yarn over, push your hook through the stitch. Yarn over
and pull back through the stitch (3 loops on hook). Yarn
over, pull yarn through the first TWO stitches only and
you will have 2 loops on hook remaining. Now, yarn
over and pull through the last two loops.

American Sweetheart Dress

Baby girls have a sweetness all their own, but as
most mommas know, they seem just that much
sweeter all dolled up for events and holidays! I
wanted to make this dress pattern to fit whatever
occasion the crocheter whipped it up for- but
specifically for Independence Day this year! As
a summer dress, of course I used a lighter yarn,
but the open v- stitch lets baby breathe
comfortably even when it's hot. Not to mention,
it's just too adorable not to take advantage of
such a simple but beautiful stitch! It was a fairly
easy WIP to work up, and is a family favorite
already! Enjoy!
Difficulty level: Easy/intermediate
Abbreviations:
SC- Single Crochet,
DC- Double Crochet
Ch-chain
Sl-sl st
Materials:
• Yarn- Caron Simply Soft yarn: 3
skeins
1 skein of each color: shown in red(Color A),
Bright white (Color B), and deep
blue-(Color C)
• Hook: H Hook
Notes for this pattern: Stars or ribbons can be added to the top or bottom of the dress to add
that special touch you are looking for. This dress can be done in Christmas colors as well and
worn with a little sweater for cooler weather.
Using Color A
Ch 52. Sl st into first ch made.
Row 1: Ch one. SC in all stitches (52 SC). Sl st into first SC.
Row 2: Ch two. Double crochet in the next 2 stitches. 2 DC in next stitch.* DC in next 3
stitches. 2 DC in the next stitch. ** Repeat from * to ** until the end of the row. Sl st into top of
CH 2.
Row 3: Ch two. Double crochet into the next 3 stitches. 2 DC into the next stitch. *DC into the
next 4 stitches. 2 DC into the next stitch. ** Repeat from * to ** until the end of the row. Sl st
into top of Ch 2.
Row 4: Repeat row 3.
Using color B
Row 5: Ch two. In the same stitch: 1 DC, ch 1, 2 DC. (This will be your first v-stitch "shell)
Skip one stitch. *In next stitch, 2 DC, ch 1, 2 DC. Skip 1 st. ** Repeat from * to ** until you
have 9 "shells". ch 3, and skip 20 stitches.*In next stitch, 2 DC, ch 1, 2 DC. Skip next stitch. **
Repeat from * to ** until you have made 9 "shells". Ch 3, and again skip 20, and sl st into the
top of the beginning ch 2.
Row 6: Sl st into the middle of the first shell made on row 5. Ch 2. In that same space: 1 DC, ch
1, 2 DC. (This counts as the first "shell"). In the middle ch 1 of the next shell, 2 DC, ch 1, 2 DC.
Continue this pattern in each shell created on the previous row. At Ch 3 spots, 2 DC, ch 1, 2
DC, and continue to create a shell in each shell of the previous row. At the end of the row, sl st
into the top of beginning ch 2.
Row 7- 9: Sl st into the center ch 1 of first shell. Ch 2, 1 DC, ch 1, 2 DC. *In center ch 1 of next
shell, 2 DC, ch 1, 2 DC** Repeat from * to ** throughout. Sl st into beginning ch 2.
Using color C
Row 10-13: Repeat rows 7-9.
Row 14: Ch one.* 1 SC into first DC of shell. In the middle ch 1 of shell, 5 DC. 1 SC in the
first DC of next shell. ** Repeat from * to ** until the end of the row to create a scalloped
ruffle along the bottom of your dress.
Now, all that's left is to weave in your ends, throw a red, white, or blue onesie on baby, and put
her in her new dress! She will be an all too adorable American sweetheart every time she wears
it.

Lay handles aside.
With sewing needle and matching thread, sew ⅝”
button to center of Flower.
Sew a ⅞" button to center of each Handle Tab as
shown in photo.
With WS tog, place one Tab over one dressmaker’s
mark, adjusting as necessary so widest portion of
same end of Tab sits just below top edge of Tote.
Sew in place using invisible sts. Turn Tote over and
fold free end of Tab to outside of Tote. Place the
Tab through the link on the handle, centering this
end of Tab over end already attached. Sew in
place. (One end of one handle now firmly
attached.)

Patriotic Mason Jar Cozy

These jar cozy’s can be made in any color combination to match the occasion.
You can make these up pretty quick and they can be used for soda cans, Solo
cups or drinking glasses.
Materials:

I would like to introduce you to our
featured designer of the month;
Ashley Leither.
Ashley is the owner/operator of Ashley
Designs Corner where she designs and
creates crochet works of art.
We asked Ashley how she learned to
crochet. She told us that she learned a little crochet and knitting in high school
from her mom. However, didn't pick it up again until the beginning of 2011
after her daughter received a crochet beanie as a gift. She then became so
intrigued with the texture of the beanie that instantly she knew she wanted to
learn how to make one. She headed to the local yarn store and picked up a
“learn to crochet” book and with the help of the book and YouTube videos,
she learned everything she could and is still learning!
Her two children motivate her more than anything. She told us “I love to
crochet with them by my side and teach them that if you want to learn
something and are determined enough, you can do (make) anything.”
Ashley’s favorite hook is her K Hook; of which she admits having many, most
specifically the ones with bamboo handles, like Yarnology’s hooks. Vanna’s
Choice yarn is her favorite because the color choices are just endless.
The crochet tip that she wants to share with all of her fellow crocheters is to
ALWAYS, ALWAYS, ALWAYS count your stitches! I can’t tell how many times
when I started out; I did not count my stitches and then I would have to frog
my work and start over. It only takes a few seconds (or minute, depending
upon how many stitches you are counting) but it will save time and frustration
later.
When she is not crocheting or creating she loves to bake cakes, cookies and
muffins. She says “they don’t always turn out super pretty and I won’t be
venturing into professional baking anytime soon, but they do come out of the
oven tasty!”

I love summer and I love wearing flip flops.
And for some summer occasions bare feet
are a must. Dress up those bare feet for a
special occasion with a pair of crocheted
barefoot sandals. Essentially, these crazy
cute little embellishments serve no real
purpose, except to show off a fabulous
pedicure and adorable toes! And I’m
totally okay with that. Wear them alone,
combined with a pair of flip flops, at the
beach, in the pool or hanging out in your
back yard. Color combinations and themes
are endless!

Materials:
∗ Worsted weight yarn (such as Red
Heart), 100 – 125 yards

Cuff Base
With green doubled up lace yarn chain 48 (S) or 56 (L) and join with a slip stitch

Make a MR, dc 3 times, ch2, Repeat in MR 3 times; join to the top of first dc.
Work a dc in each dc around and put 2dc, ch2 2dc in each ch2 space.
Repeat until the blanket is a 24 ¾ in diameter. Adding the last sc round should make the blanket an
even 25X25.
Use turtle color of choice and work one round of sc in each dc around and put 3sc in each ch2 space.
F/O and weave in tails
Assembly:
Sew the arms as mentioned previously with the elbow pads; sew the arms to the neck part.
Sew the mask and face pieces as previously mentioned.
Sew the neck to the middle of the blanket part. Stuff as you sew. Enjoy
your new turtle friend!
