Editorial
Australia’s best known GM, Ian Rogers has written a number of
articles in the past that have been very complimentary of the
Canterbury Junior Chess Club and our ability to act as a major
nursery for Victorian junior chess talent. Last year, when the
news of the loss of the Rochestor Rd venue broke, he surmised
that this “means that the conveyor belt of top juniors emerging
from Melbourne will slowly grind to a halt.”
Recent coaching sessions and rookies events where we have had
record numbers, even though they clashed with other events, are

good early signs that the GM’s downside view may be on the pessimistic side. (see Junior Coaching Report).
The CJCC continues to provide an entry point for juniors, good basic coaching from introductory to advanced levels
at affordable prices. If the junior has the interest and commitment, many go on to engage private outside coaches
for more advanced one on one sessions (refer to advertisements in this newsletter).

Game of the Week (by Laurence Matheson)
Pranas,S - Chiverton,F [B00]
Begonia 2015 (3), 08.03.2015
Today we'll have a look at a game sent in from a reader,
played at the recent Ballarat Begonia tournament
which was dominated by top seed Kanan Izzat who
finished on a spectacular 7/7 1.e4 d5 2.e5 Already an
unusual choice, as the game will now tend to look like a
French or Caro-Kann advance variation, but Black has
more options than usual as he isn't committed to either
...c6 or ...e6 [If White wants to avoid the main lines
after 2.exd5, 2.Nc3 is a better bet] 2...Bf5 A good
choice, bringing the Bishop out before playing ...e6
[2...c5 is also an idea to discourage White's d4 advance]
3.d4 e6 4.c3 Now we have a very characteristic advance
Caro-Kann structure, except that Black has not played
c6 and thus is effectively a tempo up 4...Nc6 I'm not so
sure about this move, as it seems to cut across Black's
main plans for the position (in fact this position is often
reached by the move order 1.e4 Nc6 2.d4 d5 3.e5 Bf5
4.c3 e6) [It looks more thematic to play 4...c5 before
playing Nc6, where Black will have real pressure on the
d4-pawn due to his tempo gain] 5.Nf3 f6 With the
knight on c6, this is Black's other plan to break up the
White central chain 6.Bb5 Nge7 7.0–0 Qd7 8.Bf4 Ng6
9.Bg3 0–0–0 We have an opposite side castling
situation now, so we can expect to see attacks on
opposite wings starting soon 10.Nbd2 a6 11.Ba4 h5
12.h4 [12.h3 may have created fewer weaknesses for
Black to exploit] 12...Bg4 13.Re1 Nge7!? An interesting
choice, aiming to play ...g5 and reposition the knight on
f5 [13...fxe5 14.dxe5 Nge7 was a little safer] 14.b4!
White's attack is suddenly coming faster than expected
14...b5?! [Black had a surprising defence in 14...Nf5
15.b5 Na7! 16.bxa6 b5! and White's attack is still a little
way from breaking through] 15.Bc2 Now White's
simple threat of a4 is very difficult to meet 15...g5?
Black aims to distract with a kingside attack, but this
only makes things worse [15...Nf5! 16.Bxf5 (16.a4 Nxg3
17.axb5 axb5 18.fxg3 fxe5 19.Bd3! Nb8 (19...e4?
20.Bxb5 exf3 21.Qa4 and White wins) 20.Nxe5 Bxd1
21.Nxd7 Kxd7 22.Raxd1 and White has a small edge)
16...Bxf5 17.a4 bxa4 18.Qxa4 Bd3
and Black's position is still fairly solid]
16.exf6 Nf5 [16...gxh4 17.Bxh4 Nf5
18.Bxf5 gives Black similarly little to
show for his material] 17.Bxf5 exf5
18.hxg5 h4 19.Bf4 h3 20.g3 Now
White should have a solid two pawn advantage, with
Black unable to break through 20...h2+ 21.Kh1 Bd6
22.a4! This has to be calculated carefully, but should
win for White [22.Bxd6 Qxd6 23.Qc2 f4 24.Ne5 was the
other defensive option] 22...Bxf4 23.gxf4 Qd6 24.axb5
axb5 25.Ra8+ Kd7 26.Rxd8+ Nxd8 White's attack has
broken through, and he has extra material! 27.Qe2
Qxf4 28.Qxb5+ Kc8 29.Qxd5?? A horrible blunder,
turning the result around completely [29.Qa6+ Nb7
(29...Kb8 30.Ne5 c6 31.Ra1! mates; 31...Qxd2 (31...Nb7
transposes to the main variation after 31...c6) 32.Qb6+
Nb7 33.Nxc6+ Kc8 34.Ra8+ Kd7 35.Ne5#) 30.Ne5! Kb8
31.Ra1 c6 32.b5! cxb5 (32...Qxd2 33.Nd7+ Kc7
34.Qxc6+ Kd8 35.Ra8#) 33.Nd7+ Kc7 34.Qb6+ Kxd7
35.Qxb7+ Qc7 36.Qxd5+ Qd6 37.Ra7+ and White
mates] 29...c6! Suddenly the White queen has no way
to keep protecting the f3 knight, which, when taken,
will be checkmate 30.Qxd8+ Desperation, but there
are no good moves 30...Kxd8 31.Kg2 Bh3+ 32.Kh1 Qg4
and White gave up 0–1
Position after 28…Kc8

52...h6 53.Qe5+ Kh4 [53...g5 54.Qe8+ Kh4 55.Qg6! is similar to the final position to the game - the threat is
simply Qxh6 Qh5 g3 mate. 55...gxf4 56.Qxh6+ Qh5 57.Qxf4+ Qg4 58.Qxg4#]
54.Qf6+ Kh5 [54...g5 55.Qxh6+ Qh5 56.g3#]

55...gxf5 [55...d2 fails to 56.Qxg6+ Kh4 57.Qxh6+ Qh5 58.g3#]
56.Qxf5+ Kh4 57.Qg6! [Black resigned as White intends Qxh6 Qh5 g3 mate once again, and moving a piece
to h5 allows Qg3 mate as the king can't escape to h5. A pretty incredible game, wouldn't you agree?]

Sunday Coaching Report(by Trevor Stanning)
The coaching session broke all records with 56 attending on the 15th of March. There were a few newcomers who
had booked in for their first session; these included Emma and Sophie Chang, Jacob Day, Christopher Hermawan,
and ShinWei Wong; we welcomed these new attendees and it made for a very busy enthusiastic afternoon.
In the game play part of the afternoon we matched Jacob Day (who had been referred to us by Nick Speck from the
Melbourne Chess Club) with the tournament leader Joseph Wong. This was an exciting game with Jacob showing the
benefits of his previous coaching from Nick and scoring a win; Joseph still leads the overall tournament with one
round to be played on the 22nd of March.
Some of the novice beginners asked to miss the tournament game, opting instead to have an extra 30 minutes of
coaching.
We were pleased to see some of the stronger juniors stay later in the afternoon for the ARVO SWISS played at classic
time-controls. In that session Jacob Day defeated Michael Salvagno, and ShinWei Wong had a good game against
Roger Croft.
