Dear
Friends
Welcome to Music Moves, the Brooklyn
Conservatory of Music’s 2015 Spring Gala!
Building upon the success of last year’s sold out Red Hot Winter
Gala at Roulette , this year we will activate the power of music at
the Brooklyn Museum. Our Music Moves gala will celebrate the
Conservatory’s inspiring Music Therapy Program, which fosters social,
emotional and developmental growth through active engagement
in music. It will also honor members and staunch supporters of the
Conservatory and benefit its many other extraordinary programs.
The Conservatory will present Music Moves on Tuesday, April 21 at
6:00pm. Guests will enjoy cocktails and dinner followed by swing
dancing, led by the talented Excelsior Symphony. As we did last year,
we expect Music Moves to draw musicians, parents, educators, and
community and business leaders from Brooklyn and beyond.
We need your support to keep our great programs thriving and
vibrant. We look forward to meeting you and partnering with you in
advance of this important event.
Best Regards,

MUSIC THERAPY
Music activates, inspires and stimulates emotional
expression. Music relaxes, calms the nervous
system and helps restore internal balance. Music
connects us to ourselves and others.
Music is life affirming.
Music Therapy is an evidenced-based clinical discipline where music is used to effect
positive change and foster creative expression in children and adults. In addition
to achieving clinical goals and improving social functioning of those with special
needs, people who desire to expand their lives and explore issues through creative
expression are also good candidates for music therapy.
Whether working one-on-one or in a group setting, the Brooklyn Conservatory of
Music offers music therapy for clients to grow through the transformative experience
of making music in relationship with a trained music therapist. Our credentialed
music therapists play music with clients using improvisation and specific music
interventions to address client needs and goals.

Early Intervention Program
Outreach Music Therapy
Therapeutic Music Lessons
With the support of grants and individual
donations, the program is able to offer
subsidized music therapy to most of the
participating individuals, all of whom have
emotional, development and physical
challenges. The program works with over
1000 students in 28 schools, social service
agencies and community organizations
throughout New York City.
“We have been coming to this school
for nearly 10 years. My special
needs son could barely speak at
that time. Now he is able to express
himself with the help of the amazing
therapists and teachers in this music
therapy program.”
Joeretta Washington
“The music
brought him
back to a
familiar place
and helped
motivate him
to participate
in therapy and
heal.”

Community
Outreach
Music Partners
The Conservatory created Music Partners in 1988 in response to a critical need
in the community – the rising number of New York City public schools offering
no music instruction. Today Music Partners offers subsidized, comprehensive,
and sequential music instruction at little or no cost to nearly 5,000 individuals
in 32 schools, Head Start programs and at senior centers throughout New York
City. Programs include band, strings, chorus, world drumming and percussion,
guitar, ukulele, recorder, and early childhood movement and music.
Music Partner students represent 42 nationalities and speak more than 30
languages and dialects. Additionally, 65% of these students are AfricanAmerican, Hispanic/Latino or Asian and live at or below the poverty line.
Brooklyn Conservatory
Community Orchestra
From Mozart to Copland and beyond, the Conservatory Orchestra performs
works of the great orchestral repertoire and gives several public performances
throughout the year in Brooklyn.
Brooklyn Conservatory Chorale
A dynamic chorus with high musical standards, the Conservatory Chorale
explores and performs a rich variety of musical styles, both a cappella
and with accompaniment, from the Renaissance to the present. Public
performances are given throughout the year in Brooklyn.
Early Childhood
Music education
onsite
division
In House Party: Songs and Stories from
America’s Neighborhoods, featuring the music
of Grammy Winner Dan Zanes, children and
their parents sing, dance, listen, play instruments
and learn to make music an integral part of their everyday lives while
interacting with the music and stories of the diverse cultures that make up
America’s neighborhoods.
Suzuki Method
Recognized worldwide as a highly effective approach for teaching children
the language of music, the Suzuki program is filled to capacity every year and
includes violin, viola, cello, guitar, piano and bass.
Teen Jazz
Our Teen Jazz Program provides
an opportunity for students
with limited financial means to
participate in a comprehensive
jazz program of lessons, theory,
jazz combo rehearsals, and
Big Band – taught by NYC’s
leading jazz professionals. This
program is supported by the Amy
Winehouse Foundation, Brooklyn
Community Foundation, Doris
Duke Charitable Foundation/
Chamber Music America, New
York Community Trust, and
numerous donors.
Private Lessons
We offer private instruction in nearly every orchestral and band
instrument, as well as in piano, guitar, voice and in a variety of
instruments from the around the world.
