Child Sexual Abuse in Our
Communities: How The
Great Teddy Bear Run Makes
A Difference Every Year…
April is national Child Abuse Awareness & Prevention
Month. Research and statistics continue to tell us 1 in 3 girls
and 1 in 6 boys will experience sexual abuse at some level
before they turn 18 years old.
Many children will never tell anyone what happened to them
and carry their trauma with them throughout adulthood.
NEW!
Be a GTBR Rider in Spirit!
This year riders have the opportunity to get others involved by asking
friends or family to be a Rider in Spirit and make a donation to the GTBR and
the kids we serve. Participation is completely optional and easy. Simply
download the GTBR Rider in Spirit Collection Form from the BRACAC website
at www.bracac.org after Friday, March 6th, set a goal, collect donations and
turn it all in at one of the event’s two Rally Points on Saturday, April 4th.
Donations may be cash or check (made to BRACAC) and are tax-deductible.
No amount is too small and every donation helps us help kids.

The BRACAC provided services to 486 children and 490 of their
non-offending parents and/or caregivers living in Allen, Barren,
Butler, Edmonson, Hart, Logan, Metcalfe, Monroe, Simpson and
Warren Counties during its fiscal year 2014.
Let us all be reminded...
Children are not responsible for their own protection. Rather, it is important to teach all children about safe and unsafe
touches and interactions and make sure they know who to go
to for help if they are made to feel uncomfortable or hurt in any
way;
All adults have the moral and ethical obligation to report
suspected child abuse or neglect, irrespective of whether
or not they are identified by law as a mandated reporter. In
Kentucky, the law requires all of us to report concerns of abuse
or neglect to law enforcement, the Cabinet for Health & Family
Services and/or the County or Commonwealth’s Attorney. (KRS
620.030)
Roughly 90% of offenders of sexual abuse and/or
exploitation are members of a child’s family or extended
family and/or have a position of authority and power;
Sex offenders are clever about finding opportunities to
have access to children and groom adults to lower their
boundaries about contact with their children in the same
way that they groom children for sexual contact. All parents
and caregivers should sense a “red flag” if any adult (friend,
coach, minister, teacher, or family member) seeks to spend
significant amounts of time alone with their child;
The short and long term negative effects of sexual abuse of
a child can be devastating if abuse is allowed to continue
and a child does not receive the protection, support and
treatment he/she needs to heal from the trauma sexual
abuse leaves behind. Reporting abuse to local authorities is
the first step in stopping it.
Services are available at the Barren River Area Child
Advocacy Center to children and their non-offending
parents/caregivers when abuse is suspected or a child has
disclosed abuse.
The ultimate goal of the BRACAC is to partner with the various
professionals to provide vital services to victims of child sexual
abuse at one child-friendly location so that any additional
trauma to the child and non-offending family/caregivers
is minimized or avoided altogether. Forensic Interviews,
Comprehensive Child Sexual Abuse Medical Examinations,
Mental Health Assessment, Treatment & Referral Services,
Crisis Intervention & Advocacy and many, many others, are
provided at no expense to a child’s family and as resources
and staffing allow. Participation in the Great Teddy Bear Run
for the BRACAC supports that effort every day, day after day,
year after year. The BRACAC is an Accredited Member of the
National Children’s Alliance and a founding and Full Member
of the Kentucky Association of Children’s Advocacy Centers.
