Breckenridge Community Schools HUSKIE NEWS May 2015 Edition Mission Statement: The Breckenridge Community Schools, in cooperation with students, parents, and the community, create a foundation of excellence on which to build success for the future. Superintendent’s Corner Spring is here and summer will be upon us soon. It doesn’t seem possible that another school year is coming to an end, graduation is upon us and June 5th will be here before we know it. With all that being said, my time as interim superintendent will also be coming to an end this June and Mrs. Kim Thompson will be taking over the superintendent responsibilities. I believe the district will be in good hands under Kim’s leadership. She has established herself as a solid educational leader during her thirteen years as the elementary principal. I’m confident she possesses the skills necessary to lead the district successfully into a future filled with uncertainty and opportunity. Kim’s move to the superintendent position necessitates the hiring of an elementary principal to take over her former building. That position has been posted and we are currently receiving applicants. Once the posting deadline has passed the district will be scheduling interviews with the intent to have the new person in place no later than August first. Mrs. Thompson will have class schedules and staffing assignments completed prior to her transition to the central office. As you read this school funding for the upcoming year is still being debated in Lansing and we are not certain what the school aid package will look like in its entirety. I’m confident that no matter what the funding package looks like all public schools will need to continue paying close attention to operations and continue to keep expenditures under control. At the present time I’m confident that our budget for the current fiscal year is in good shape and our audit should show a positive balance for 2014-2015. Development of the budget for next year is well underway and we will be holding our annual budget hearing prior to the regular board meeting on June 15th. We are taking a conservative approach with regard to projected revenue in development of next year’s budget, due to the uncertainty with funding for 2015-2016. At the present time, information coming out of Lansing is very mixed with regard to school funding for next year. The House, Senate and Governor have versions of a school aid budget that differ significantly. I am optimistic that the Legislature will get the details worked out and provide us with an equitable school aid package that provides adequate funding for K-12 education. In closing; I’d like to thank the Breckenridge Community Schools for the opportunity to return and serve the district over the past two years. The staff, students and community have made this a wonderful period of time and a great way to end my career. Thank you Breckenridge Dean J Havelka The Big Bad Musical - A howling courtroom comedy The Breckenridge 7th and 8th grade choir performed a musical on March 12th, in place of their winter concert this year. A courtroom has never been more lively and fun than in The Big Bad Musical! The jury — our audience — decided the outcome of the biggest trial ever in the fairy-tale world! The notorious Big Bad Wolf was being slapped with a class-action lawsuit by storybooks of quirky characters who wanted to get even: Little Red Riding Hood, her Grandmother, the Three Little Pigs and the Shepherd in charge of the Boy Who Cried Wolf. With Sydney Grimm as the commentator on live Court TV, the two greatest legal minds in the Enchanted Forest — the Evil Stepmother and the Fairy Godmother — clash in a trial that will be remembered forever after. Great job to our Middle School actors and actresses!! Our Great Start Readiness Pre-Schoolers are learning to pedal and develop their coordination and gross motor skills on the playground. We've added a few new tricycles and helmets for safety. The four year olds love them! Great Start Readiness Pre-School is grant funded and a very good place to learn. Children attend 4 full days per week. We are accepting applications for next year's program now. You can access them at www.michiganpreschool.org. If you don't have internet access you can call the elementary office 989-842-3182 and one of our staff will assist you. It is also time to sign up for Kindergarten if your child will be 5 by September 1st. Call 989-842-3182 ext 202 or stop by the elementary office during school hours. Doug Sowle Memorial Breckenridge students collected money to purchase a tree in memory of Mr. Sowle. An ornamental, flowering pear tree was planted outside his classroom. This tree will serve as a living memorial for him. His current and former students were on hand to plant the tree for Earth Day along with teachers Miss Self and Mrs. Rodriguez, Mrs. Thompson, Principal and Mrs. Sowle. Doug Sowle Memorial Bike Rally Breckenridge Elementary Staff are hosting a bike rally on May 15th from 6:00 to 7:00 p.m. Join us in the East Parking lot of the Elementary School. Students are encouraged to decorate their bike in school colors and ride in memory of Mr. Sowle who biked to school during all seasons. Prizes will be awarded for decorated bikes and a boy’s and girl’s bike will be awarded to 2 lucky students. Students under the age of 7 must be accompanied on the ride by an adult for safety. Volunteers are wanted to assist in this activity. If you are available please email [email protected] or [email protected] or call 989-842-3182 ext 200. AIM STUDENT OF THE MONTH FOR MARCH AIM-Hannah Wetherbee Hannah has become really focused on completing work, staying out of drama situations, and helping around the classroom. She is super excited about completing school in just 22 days as a senior. Hannah was nominated by Ms. Hudson.
