A letter from our Library Director
July/August 2015
Mrs. Mary Reid was honored at The Fifteenth Annual Bay Shore–Brightwaters Distinguished Citizen
Award Dinner on April 30, 2015 for her life-long commitment to helping people of all beliefs and
backgrounds. Her many years of service on Brentwood’s library board has helped us empower
individuals through enhanced facilities, collections, and programs. Thank you, Mrs. Reid, for your
years of commitment to the library community.
One of the library’s important new family literacy initiatives is Learning Together which will offer an
array of programs and services designed to enhance the family experience. Look for Safe and Healthy
Families, the first in a series of programs coming this fall.
Sincerely,
Tom Tarantowicz

Before Night Falls by Reinaldo Arenas
Antes que anochezca por Reinaldo Arenas
In his memoir, the author describes how he rose
from poverty, became a supporter of the
revolution, and was part of the literary circle in his
country. He is later imprisoned as a
counterrevolutionary and is exiled to the U.S.
This is a stunning story of how freedom – political,
personal, and artistic - can be taken away in a
totalitarian state, and how the strength of spirit
and mind can help a person survive.
individuo a sobrevivir.

El tren de los huérfanos
por Christian Baker Kline
