Resident Care Staff Changes
“Bad” year for influenza
There are a number of staff changes happening
over the next couple of months. Sheilagh McIvor, Social Worker working on A - level, is retiring, her last day of work will be February 20th.
Sheilagh has been an active part of our Interdisciplinary Team since 2003.
At the writing of this note, we have declared our
first ever Influenza outbreak on West Coast
Lodge (B3). The strain of the flu that we have
here is not the same circulating in other facilities. We have Influenza B. This strain is less
virulent then the more common Influenza A that
is causing havoc in other Long-term care and
acute care units. For the most part, residents are
feeling a bit better a few days after exhibiting
symptoms. We are implementing enhanced
infection control protocols and closing B3 to
visitors and admissions. These increased precautions will help decrease the chances it will
spread to other areas and the community.
After more than 11 years, Josee McGeough,
physical therapist for the Lodge and Veterans
Health Centre will be leaving us on February
24th to take another position with the Ministry
of Health.
Kathy DeBruin, auxiliary RN, will also be
retiring at the end of February. Kathy has been
a member of The Lodge at Broadmead staff
since the doors opened in 1995. Kathy worked
as a RN Lodge Nurse for many years, then
retired and has been working as an axillary
ever since. Happy re-retirement Kathy!
If you have not already received your annual
influenza immunization, it is not too late. There
continue to be influenza immunization clinics in
the community. Please refer to the Island Health
Flu website for more information about clinic
times and places:
As of February 2nd, Al Vandergoot (B - Level
Team Leader) will be taking on the Clinical
Resource Nurse (CRN) role. The CRN position
has been vacant since June 2014 when I became
acting DOC. For the past six months, the duties
assigned to this role have been delegated to
other team members. To replace Al as B - Level
Team Leader, Kristi Osguthorpe (A - Level
Team Leader) will be moving to B - Level and
Lisa Zickmantel (Night RN) will be temporarily
replacing Kristi on A-Level. These moves are in
preparation for further changes in the nursing
structure at The Lodge. Stay tuned.

Thank you for helping us to protect the residents. If you would like more information or
have questions, please contact Al Vandergoot,

remember, please wash your hands.

Volunteer Ruby Anniversary!
February 18 is a very special ruby anniversary for a much loved volunteer. Pat
Robertson has been leading an evening Sing-Along activity since she began volunteering
at Tillicum Lodge 40 years ago! The Lodge at Broadmead opened almost 20 years ago;
since that time, Pat has been providing her fun family Sing-Along activities in the Oak
Room. She has linked us to the community through many special guests and family
members who have joined her over the years and she continues to keep us connected.
We cannot begin to express our gratitude to Pat. She has made a
difference in the lives of countless residents, family members, staff, clients, and
volunteers over all these years. Happy Anniversary Pat!
You are an inspiration to us all!

Thank you Rudi!
Many thanks to everyone who has participated
in Rudi’s Matching Gift Campaign. Rudi’s initial
offer to match all donations up to $20,000 was
reached in two days! He then increased his
challenge to $50,000 which was matched in early
December. His next challenge of $70,000
was matched on December 31st.
Rudi has now issued a $100,000 challenge – he
will match all gifts up until March 31, 2015, to
a total donation from him of $100,000. Please
consider sending a gift to help meet this goal.
Most of the money raised will be used to
purchase overhead ceiling lifts for the residents
at the Lodge. These lifts make transferring more
comfortable, secure and dignified for residents
and make caregiving easier for staff by easing
the physical load of care and increasing
accessibility to lifts whenever they are needed.
Breaking news – as of February 13, 2015,
Rudi’s $100,000 matching gift challenge has
been met. A total of $100,736.70 has been
donated, bringing the total raised – after Rudi’s
contribution – to $201,473.30.
Thank you everyone!

Round the corner there may wait
A new road, or a secret gate
After over 12 years at the Lodge including time with the Veterans Health
Centre, I’m making a very positive choice to retire. My last day of work
will be February 20th. Numerous interests are calling as well as the voices
and energy of two wonderful young grandchildren, with a 3rd on the way.
It has been a privilege and an honour to work with residents, clients, and
their family members – past and current. I take with me a sense of gratitude and memories of rich
and inspiring encounters with so many.
I am also grateful to know that my Social Work position for the A Level Lodges will be filled by my valued colleague, Tracy Koebel who has been the Social Worker for the B Level Lodges since 2007. She
will move to my office on A1 and take over my phone number. The lodge is in the process of
hiring a new Social Worker who will then take over the B level Social Work position.

Creative Arts
The Creative Arts studio would like to thank all those who generously
donated new and lightly used greeting cards - many of them helped us
contribute to the festive feelings around The Lodge at Broadmead,
becoming ornaments for the many trees that sprouted up for
the month of December. If you happened to find yourself in
the Oak Room at the end of December, you may have seen our
partridge in a pear tree installation. Our loyal papier-mâché
tree from the studio is dressed up for various occasions
throughout the year, and during the most recent holiday
season, it played host to beautiful resident-made watercolour
pears. Residents were invited to view the tree, share a carol or
two and select the pair of their choice to keep. For spring, the
tree will be adorned with special Valentine’s Day card. Each
card features a miniature version of resident artwork on the
front of the envelope. Inside each envelope resides a short
quote from a resident, sure to put a smile on your face. We
invite you to bring your family member to the Oak Room in
February to pick an envelope from the tree.
We wish the residents, families and friends a healthy and
cheerful spring!
