June 2015 Broadview Missionary Baptist Church Pastor’s Corner: The BiG M.O.E. go ye therefore and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the father and of the son and of the holy ghost Matthew 28:19 KJV Inside This Issue Pastor’s Corner ............................... 1 Strategic Planning Committee Report ............................................ 2 The mission of BMBC is to, “spread the gospel to the ends of the earth,” (ref. Acts 1:8). As we endeavor to fulfill this mission, I am converting all mission activities (Missions and the Lewis/Travis Movement) to the BIG M.O.E. So what is the BIG M.O.E.? The acronym M.O.E. is defined as Missions—to the ends of the earth (Mark 16:15–16), Outreach—to the neighborhoods (Matt 25:35-40 and Matt 9:37-38); for children the outreach scriptures are Jeremiah 1:710 and Isaiah 52:7. Evangelism—as you go (Matthew 10:7-14, Isa 6:8, Romans 1:16 and 2 Timothy 4:5). This is what we have been engaged in for the past seven years. In the late ‘70’s Pastor Emeritus Hopson invited Missionary Johnny Washington to BMBC. Brother Washington had been sharing the gospel with the Indians in the southwest. It had been a desire of Mission Moment: SPARK............... 2 Prison Ministry Embraces M.O.E .. 3 Welcome New Members ................ 3 Boys to Men Fellowship Invite ...... 4 June Calendar .................................. 5 Mother/Daughter Fellowship Review and Photos ...................... 6 mine to participate in missions in a manner other than with clothing, food or money. I wanted BMBC to be able to share the Word and love of God with Pastor Marvin G. Parker others without the use of material items or money. Missions and Lewis/Travis Movement was changed to The BIG M.O.E. to keep us focused and on one accord. The planning and strategizing task of missions was assigned to Brother Arnold and Reverend Walker. They queried me about my mission goals and developed the framework. They established territories identified as Jerusalem (5 mile vicinity of BMBC), Judea, (over 5 miles in IL), Samaria (national non-IL) and The Ends of the Earth (international). They worked together and the evidence of their challenging works was several mission trips to Africa, The Caribbean, Ecuador, Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, New York, Ohio, Montana, Tennessee and Washington. All mission activities have been converted to The BIG M.O.E. You can live a better life on earth with assurance of a perfect existence with God in the afterlife. How? By asking God’s forgiveness for your sins and then accepting Jesus’ payment for the penalty of your sins. Eric King Strategic planning is creating a vision of the future and managing toward that expectancy. It is operating under a vision and mission statement umbrella that focuses the organization's efforts. Strategic planning answers three big questions: Where are we today? Where do we want to be in the future? What should we be focused on today, so we will be where we want to be in the future? The purpose of the strategic plan for BMBC is to develop a five year planning cycle designed to foster growth, retention, collaboration, leadership development, and engagement of the church m e m b e r s h i p . The five goal areas for the strategic plan established by Pastor Parker and affirmed by the Executive Committee are: Missions, Outreach and Evangelism ( BIG M.O.E.) Attendance and Membership Baptisms Curriculum, Instruction, and Technology Tithes and Offerings. The Guiding Principles are: Reflecting the vision and mission of BMBC (Acts 1:8, 1 John 4:20) A visualizing goals and strategies addressing critical issues and spiritual needs. Missions Moments: SPARK—Igniting A Culture of Multiplication Submitted by the Walkers The conference focused on creating a Culture of Multiplication through church planting and within the local churches by making disciples who in turn make disciples, creating spontaneous patterns of repeated behaviors. Reverend Robert and M. Ann Walker attended the Exponential Conference held April 27 – 30, 2015, in Tampa FL. The Exponential Conference attendance was over 5000 with 100+ speakers and 150+ workshops. The scripture reference was 2 Timothy1:6, “Wherefore, I put thee in remembrance that thou stir up the gift of God, which is in thee by the putting on of my hands.” Page 2 We attended several breakout sessions including: Training and identifying church planters, Planting multi-ethnic churches, and Intentional discipleship. While there will always be a need for structured classroom teaching, it was pointed out at SPARK—true discipleship is caught rather than taught. It is caught through life on life transfer. Jesus said, “Go and ma ke di scip le s” (M att 2 8 :1 9) , “follow me, and I will make you fishers of men” (Matt. 4:19). The church would go from informing people to preparing them. All programs would have a specific purpose. Relationships (intentional discipleship) would replace activities. Instead of accumulating people they would be sent to disciple others. BMBC is off to a great start; our mission statement already says, “train our membership to love God and all people.” Discipleship drives missions. Disciples who make disciples would fuel our vision statement which is to, “take the Gospel to the ends of the earth for the Lord Jesus Christ.” The Voice Prison Ministry Embraces M.O.E. Submitted by Dea. Larry Lee Missions, Outreach and Evangelism (M.O.E.) has always been the purpose and plan of BMBC’s Prison Ministry. The BMBC Prison Ministry started over 20 years ago going to the county jails in Cook and Dupage Counties. The ministry has expanded to include Sheridan Correctional Center in Sheridan, IL. Two services are held on the 3rd Sunday, of every month. The Prison Ministry has affected over 3500 inmates who attended services and heard the Word of God. Over 280 unsaved inmates came forward to give their life to Christ. During the 1st quarter of 2015, over 850 inmates attended our church services and 99 unsaved souls responded to the Invitation to Discipleship. God is good. The Prison Ministry falls under the BMBC Missions Department. The director is Rev. Charles Pearson. The ministry’s goal is to share the good news of the Gospel of Jesus Christ to those incarcerated in prison. Matthew. 25:36, “Naked and ye clothed me: I was sick and ye visited me: I was in prison, and ye came unto me.” Pastor’s Corner Continued from page 1 The vision of sharing Christ’s love has been realized through missions. Now all members have the opportunity to participate in the BIG M.O.E. God guides our focus when we read His Word and follow His will not ours. I believe the Missions/Travis-Lewis Movement now The BIG M.O.E., is a Great Commission of God and we must obey His Word. Larry Lee On May 9, 2015, over 250 ladies— mothers, grandmothers with their daughters, granddaughters, aunts, nieces and sisters, came together f o r the annual BMBC M o t h e r / Daughter Fellowship. Those who attended the program really enjoyed the entire program which lasted from 11:30 to 2:00 P.M. in the church’s Fellowship Hall. The Fellowship gave participants an opportunity to spend quality time in sisterly fellowship exposing everyone to a kind of beauty that the world doesn’t speak much about today. There were plenty of beautiful dresses, hats and gloves which made a beautiful afternoon of good fellowship and Christian love. The program’s agenda emphasized the significance of the Christian woman. From all of the program’s activities to the keynote speaker— Dr. Shante Bishop, along with the scrumptious refreshments, the Mother/Daughter Fellowship was truly delightful. Dr. Bishop commented on the challenges of being a Christian woman in today’s social media conscious world. According to Deaconess Pamela Bush, one of the Program’s coordinators, “We learned that real beauty is in all of us because we all are created by God!” Page 6 June 2015 Mother/Daughter Fellowship Photos Photos by Melvin Jackson Page 7 June 2015 Weekly Activities SUNDAY 8:15 A.M.
