Joanne and Gene are long-time residents of Brooklyn and well known for their philanthropy and public service. Joanne led the community planning process that created the Master Plan for Brooklyn Bridge Park and is currently seeing it through to completion as a Director of the Brooklyn Bridge Park Corporation. Gene, who is a Trustee of Maimonides Medical Center, was Executive Director and Chairman of the Municipal Assistance Corporation and Chairman of the Citizens Budget Commission. Gene also co-founded kps Capital Partners, lp and Keilin & Co., llc. Linda Gordon Our distinguished speaker for the evening is Linda Gordon. Linda is University Professor of Humanities and History at New York University and has published three prize-winning books in a row: The Moral Property of Women, the history of birth-control politics; Heroes of Their Own Lives, about family violence; and Pitied But Not Entitled: Single Mothers and the History of Welfare. The Great Arizona Orphan Abduction, about a vigilante action against Mexican-Americans, won the Bancroft prize for best book in us history. Her biography of photographer Dorothea Lange also won that prize, making her one of three authors ever to win it twice. Her most recent book is the co-authored Feminism Unfinished. Brooklyn Historical Society’s Othmer Library is a research library comprised of archives and manuscripts, published materials, maps, artifacts, paintings, photographs, films, and oral histories. The library possesses a unique collection of Brooklyn and Long Island materials which provide important insights into our nation’s history and heritage. All proceeds from the Library Dinner benefit Brooklyn Historical Society’s efforts to preserve, digitize, and make these collections increasingly available to the public. In honor of our 150th Anniversary in 2013, Brooklyn Historical Society created a campaign for a dynamic future of growth, relevancy, and innovation. Through ground-breaking research; a new focus on 21st century collecting; an increased roster of exhibits, public programs and educational offerings; and burgeoning services to students, educators, scholars and the general public, the 150 th Anniversary campaign strives to bring our vast resources and historical treasures to expanded audiences in new and exciting ways.
