Joanne Witty & Eugene Keilin
We are delighted to honor Joanne Witty and Eugene Keilin for our 11th Annual
Library Dinner. Joanne and Gene are long-time residents of Brooklyn and well
known for their philanthropy and public service. Joanne led the community
planning process that created the Master Plan for Brooklyn Bridge Park and is
currently seeing it through to completion as a Director of the Brooklyn Bridge
Park Corporation. Gene, who is a Trustee of Maimonides Medical Center, was
Executive Director and Chairman of the Municipal Assistance Corporation
and Chairman of the Citizens Budget Commission. Gene also co-founded kps
Capital Partners, lp and Keilin & Co., llc.
Linda Gordon
Our distinguished speaker for the evening is Linda Gordon. Linda is University
Professor of Humanities and History at New York University and has published
three prize-winning books in a row: The Moral Property of Women, the history
of birth-control politics; Heroes of Their Own Lives, about family violence; and
Pitied But Not Entitled: Single Mothers and the History of Welfare. The Great
Arizona Orphan Abduction, about a vigilante action against Mexican-Americans,
won the Bancroft prize for best book in us history. Her biography of photographer
Dorothea Lange also won that prize, making her one of three authors ever to win
it twice. Her most recent book is the co-authored Feminism Unfinished.

This year’s Library Dinner is dedicated to our
dear friend and Trustee, Gina Ingoglia Weiner.
Brooklyn Historical Society’s Othmer Library is a research library comprised
of archives and manuscripts, published materials, maps, artifacts, paintings,
photographs, films, and oral histories. The library possesses a unique collection
of Brooklyn and Long Island materials which provide important insights into
our nation’s history and heritage. All proceeds from the Library Dinner benefit
Brooklyn Historical Society’s efforts to preserve, digitize, and make these
collections increasingly available to the public.
In honor of our 150th Anniversary in 2013, Brooklyn Historical Society created
a campaign for a dynamic future of growth, relevancy, and innovation. Through
ground-breaking research; a new focus on 21st century collecting; an increased
roster of exhibits, public programs and educational offerings; and burgeoning
services to students, educators, scholars and the general public, the 150 th
Anniversary campaign strives to bring our vast resources and historical
treasures to expanded audiences in new and exciting ways.
Our mission is to connect the past to the present and to make the vibrant history
of Brooklyn tangible, relevant, and meaningful for today’s diverse communities
and for generations to come.
