Scholarships in the amount of $1,000 each will be awarded to four students, one from each of the four geographic areas [north, south, east and west] in North Carolina. College Book Scholarship, funded by the Latinas Promoviendo Comunidad/Lambda Pi Chi Sorority, Inc., is open to underrepresented minority women who are attending high schools in Raleigh, North Carolina, and who will enroll in a college or university for the 2014-2015 academic year. Academic achievement, leadership potential, and community involvement will be considered during the selection process. The Scholarship will be awarded to three outstanding graduating high school seniors from schools in Raleigh, North Carolina. The Scientific Equipment & Furniture Association’s Student Design Contest is open to high school juniors and seniors, and to full-time college students who are enrolled in an undergraduate or graduate program at a college or university located in the U.S. Students compete for scholarships by creating innovative designs for any piece of laboratory equipment or furniture. Students may submit individual entries or in teams of up to three students. Entering the design contest consists of submitting an essay that clearly describes their idea for any piece of laboratory equipment or furniture. Applicants will draw from their lab experience at high school or college when creating a piece of lab furniture that will increase the way students learn in the lab. Three scholarships will be awarded, including first, second and third place winners. In addition to the essay, applicants must submit a video of up to 5 minutes that shows a digital 3-D rendering of the furniture, the actual completed piece of furniture, or a prototype of the furniture piece. These scholarships provide financial support to high school students as well as undergraduate students entering college for the first time. The purpose of the scholarship is to help underserved students who may not be eligible for other scholarships. Students who have either graduated from high school or earned their G.E.D. may apply. Minimum grade point average is 2.0. Students must have a strong desire to go to college and earn their degree. Students must also have a desire to give back to their communities. The scholarship fund was established by Gloria Carter and her son Shawn Carter (Shawn Carter is better known as hip-hop rapper Jay-Z) to offer a unique opportunity to students who have been incarcerated or faced particular life challenges but still want to pursue higher education. The program gives them a chance that most other programs do not offer. The Carter Foundation is a firm believer in helping young people not only reach their career goals but also establish a secure future. Students up to age 25 may apply. The scholarship can be used for tuition, room and board, books, fees and other college-related expenses. All high school seniors, undergraduate students at two-year or four-year institutions and vocational or trade school students are eligible. UNIDOS is a tri-university organization (NC State/Duke/UNC-Chapel Hill) that provides scholarships for Hispanic students that are about to begin their first year in college. The requirements to apply are that the student must live in North Carolina, he/she must be Hispanic (does not have to be 100%), and he/she must be starting any college next fall.
