CAREER SYNOPSIS
AWARDS
Sonny is an internationally recognized, award-winning urban design
practitioner, policy maker and educator with twenty eight years of
experience in large scale planning and urban design projects in Europe,
Canada, United Arab Emirates and the Caribbean. With 250+ projects
in his portfolio, Sonny is an urban designer who combines visionary
thinking with pragmatism to conceptualize and implement a wide range
of project types and scales. His international private and public sector
experiences bring value and fresh perspectives on planning, design and
development. Sonny is a Charrette veteran, with over 200 events with
clients and stakeholders.
Sonny’s award portfolio includes 25
Canadian and international awards,
including three Canadian Institute
of Planners Awards for Planning
Excellence in Urban Design; His
continuous high performance
and innovative approaches to
the planning profession have
also earned him the prestigious
2006 Calgary’s Immigrants Aid
Society Award in the category of
Distinguished Professional.
In the recent past, Sonny was a Manager of the Calgary Centre City
Planning and Implementation division where he oversaw policy planning,
development applications and public realm implementation of the awardwinning Calgary Centre City Plan that he helped create in his previous
City of Calgary post. In 2011 he returned from United Arab Emirates where
he played a key role in implementation of the visionary Abu Dhabi Plan
2030. At the Abu Dhabi Urban Planning Council, he led and managed a
design team that completed more than hundred Urban Design /Community
master planning and public realm improvement projects.
Sonny is experienced in both, high density urban infill and suburban
community design in a variety of scales, including master plan
concepts, outline plans, spatial organization, public realm design and
architectural theming.
CANADIAN EXPERIENCE
ALBERTA - Calgary: urban design policy and direction for Calgary Centre
City, Beltline, 17 Avenue, 13 Avenue Heritage Greenway, Volunteer Way,
East Village, West Village, University Campus in Calgary; Edmonton:
advisory role for the creation of the new downtown and urban design
team, Lethbridge, and Medicine Hat downtown advisory role.
ONTARIO - Toronto: York University Master Plan, “Morningside Heights
Community”, “Jefferson Forest”, Bond Avenue Townhouse development),
Hamilton (“50 Point Place”, “Monticello”, “ROPA 9 land”), Oakville
(“Lakeshore Woods”), Brampton (“Bram Area East B and C”), Stoney
Creek (“Lake Pointe”) Kingston, London, Milton, , Dundas, Mississauga,

INTERNATIONAL EXPERIENCE:
United Arab Emirates: 100+ projects in four cities. Design and review of
community projects in Abu Dhabi Capital District (300,000 residents),
Reem Island (200,000 residents), Port Zayed, and three plans on the
iconic Yas island. Abu Dhabi Corniche strategy; Al Ain Downtown Plan
Latvia: Urban Design strategy for re-purposing and revitalization of the
former Soviet Union naval base into Tourist destination.
Trinidad and Tobago: CIDA project for community enhancements in the
Port of Spain.
Former Yugoslavia: Downtown planning and heritage architecture
preservation for the City of Slavonski Brod (Croatia)
In addition, Sonny has extensive experience in Downtown, Waterfront
and Public realm planning and design as well as urban design related to
Transportation infrastructure.
