GUIDELINE
BASIC SCIENCES EXAMINATION (ORTHOPAEDIC SURGERY)
INSTRUCTION TO CANDIDATES
Welcome to the Basic Sciences Examination (Orthopaedic Surgery) 2015 organized by the
College of Surgeons, Academy of Medicine of Malaysia and Conjoint Board of Orthopaedic
Surgery, Malaysia. We would like to remind you of the following:
1. Candidates are required to register 30 minutes before the stipulated time.
2. Candidates are required to bring along their Identity Card for verification.
3. Road signs will be put up at the entrance of road towards the Examination Building,
National University of Malaysia and to Faculty of Medicine, National University of
Malaysia premises to direct you to the car park located nearby the main building (kindly
refer to the map attached).
4. Section A examination results will be posted at 3.00 pm, 27th April 2015 on the notice
board outside the Examination Hall, National University of Malaysia.
5. Candidates who pass their Section A examination are required to check the time-table for
their OSCE session which will be held on the next day (i.e 28th April 2015) and Viva
sessions that are held day after (i.e 29th & 30th April 2015).
 Candidates are advised to wear a white lab coat and formal attire during the OSCE
and VIVA sessions.
 Only those candidates who pass Section A are allowed to sit for Section B.

Final result will be made available at 5.00 pm, on 30th April 2015. A certificate will be
issued to successful candidate. The list of the passing candidates will be put up on the Basic
Sciences Examination (Orthopaedic Surgery) website for candidates to refer to.

examination.

EXAMINATION FORMAT AND REGULATION

100 SAQs
OSCE (10 Stations)
B
VIVAS (3 Stations)
SECTION A- SAQs
a) This section consists of 100 Single Answer Questions (SAQs) and maximum mark per
question is 1. Five (5) stems for each question. Only one stem is correct answer.
b) Timing for Section A : SAQs: 180 minutes (3 hours)
c) Only candidates who have passed Section A shall be allowed to proceed to Section B
examination.
SECTION B – OSCE and Viva Voce
OSCE Examination
a) OSCE examination consists of 10 OSCE stations.
b) The OSCE examination will include the following assessment of the basic daily clinical
surgical skills:
 Basic surgical skills e.g. suturing, dressing, aseptic technique etc.
 Three dimensional spatial orientation
 Instrument identification
 Communication skills
c) Timing for Section B : OSCE: 35 minutes
 3 minute in each station and 30 seconds to move to the next station.

SECTION B – OSCE and Viva Voce
VIVA Examination
a) This section consists of 3 viva voce i.e. Table 1 - Anatomy , Table 2 Physiology
and Table 3 – Pathology, Principles of Surgery, Biomechanics and Biomaterials
b) Timing for Section B : VIVA: 20 minutes per table
