BOTHELL SONS OF NORWAY 2-106
President’s Message
Dear Members:
I wish to thank all who participated in the Syttende Mai parade in Ballard. Queen Kay and King Bob were once again
smiling and waving to the crowds and were a big hit with the kids. Princess Julia was aglow in the back of Mike’s MG and
it was fun to hear the kids call her name. To all the others who participated in the parade representing Bothell Lodge I
cannot begin to tell you how much I appreciate your devotion to the lodge. As we were trying to count heads we believe
we had around 40 members and friends in the parade. HIP HIP HURRAH.
As we prepare to move into the summer months I want to thank everyone for all of the time and work that you have put
into the lodge in the last 5 months. Preparing and running all of the classes and events that we have hosted here at the lodge
is above and beyond reproach. Selma and her crew putting together the Rummage Sale and its success as well all the
donations from our members made for a great sale. All of our members work hard and your efforts have not gone
unnoticed. I appreciate all that you the members do to make Bothell one of the most talked about lodges in the district.
As I look thru the summer we have the Fourth of July parade, Border Fest, Steak Fry at Trollhaugen, District 2 Golf
tournament and many other activities. Make sure you check your Nyheter, for all the upcoming events and classes here at
the lodge and elsewhere.
Remember, as the summer approaches be careful and have fun. I look forward to seeing all of you at the summer events
and again in the fall. Be safe in your travels and remember if you have not talked to someone lately give them a call or get
together you will love the feeling of getting together and sharing a little friendship.
Again I wish to thank all the members for the hard work you are doing to keep our lodge one of the best in District 2.
Have a Great Summer

SUMMER 2015
Trustee Corner
I would like to thank, Mike Nelson for be Trustee of the
Month, for the month of May 2015.
The Trustee of the month is to check the Lodge
inside and out, at least once a week during the month.
He or she can check the Lodge at their convenience for
possible problem’s, water leaks, doors or windows left
open, trees or branch’s down, if the heat has been
turned down and all lights have been turned off. This is
very important in the summer months; because of the
Lodge being used less and not as much traffic coming
through.
The Trustee’s for the summer months of 2015
will be as follows.
June – Chris Hicks
July – Ivar Thompson
Aug – Seth Tufteland
Sept – Wayne Lawson
Silent Auction – October
Meeting
Since a great time was had by all who
participated in the Silent Auction last October we
are going to do it again at the October Lodge
Meeting. This auction benefits the Ray Berg
Memorial Scholarship Fund. This auction along
with the sales from the raffles, calendars, note
cards and memorial donations allows the lodge to
award scholarships to college bound high school
graduates.
Please keep this auction in mind when you are
traveling and shopping this summer and would
like to donate an item and support our youth.
Enjoy your Summer!

Scholarship Committee Chairperson
Thank You Mike Nelson, Lead Trustee

SUMMER 2015
SPECTACULAR COLLABORATIVE
SUCCESS (THE RUMMAGE SALE)
I express a humungous “Thank You” to my “Energizer Bunny” co-workers, Solveig Lindstrom and Ragnild
Jonassen.
We attribute the success of this rummage sale to us, the determined and dedicated worker bees who hauled,
received, cleaned, polished, priced and re-packaged the donated merchandise for four months.
The variety of high quality donations from lodge members, their neighbors and friends was well noted by many of
our customers, as were the well-organized tables. Some were very pleased and asked to repeat the sale next year----the answer, not likely!!
Without the diligence and aggressive advertising by Laurie Beach and placement on our reader board by Seth
Tufteland few would have known about the sale. Our handsome VIKING MASCOT, David Williams, dressed in
Viking garb, stood out by our street sign, received car honks and a box of fresh donuts, which he shared.
The set up for the sale began Tuesday May 5 with a crew of 12, Wednesday May 6 with a day crew of 7 to haul
boxes up from the basement, Wednesday May 6 with a night crew of 7 to set up the tables, Thursday May 7 with a
crew of 23 to place donations on the tables inside and outside, Friday May 8 with a crew of 20, Saturday May 9
with a crew of 23, to sell-sell-sell.
The “Energizer Bunny” crew was:
Mike Nelson, Ivar Thompson, Bob/Kay Schertzl, Ken/Freda Howard, Stig/Cherly Berg, Gary/Myrna Ramstad,
Dolores Misner, Joyce Burlingame, Yuka Nakata, Marlys Melrose, Annie Willyard, John/Darcy McTernan,
Marilyn Frosvig, Diana Brunkow, Janet Johnson, Janie Putts, Liv/Bjorn Warford, Robert Bergstrom, Tap/Sue
Ames, Marlis Pehling, Trina Patrick, Bob Steed, Bruce Lowe, Ivan/Molly Thompson, Greta Dixon, Bill Fosmoe,
Ellie Fife, Sam Brogger, Vicki Nelson, Laurie Beach, Chris/Diana/Bill Hicks, Heather Nelson, Marilyn Hansen.
It was a very pleasant experience to work with the Salvation Army who hauled away the leftovers.

LESE GRUPPE
(“Reading Group”)
PLEASE JOIN US! All are welcome. Lese Gruppe will meet on Thursday, June 11, 2015 at 10:00 a.m. at the
Bothell Lodge.
At our May meeting, we discussed The Cyanide Canary by Joseph Hilldorfer and Robert Dugoni. It is an
alarmingly true story but is enthralling as fiction. In 1996 in Soda Springs, Idaho, a 20-year-old worker was
seriously injured when he was exposed to cyanide poisoning in the fertilizing plant where he worked. For more
than four years Environmental Protection Agent Hilldorfer, U.S. Attorney Robert Dugoni, and others struggled
to expose the owner, Allan Elias, for the lack of safety regulations at the plant. It is a story of greed and evil, as
well as the tireless work of the agents, and eventual justice in the courtroom.
We will not meet in July and August; meetings will be resume in September on the second Thursdays at 10:00
a.m. at the Bothell Lodge:
June: An Untamed Heart by Lauraine Snelling
September: Work Song by Ivan Doig
It is not required that you read the book in order to attend the meeting. To check out books from the Sons of
Norway library, please sign the logbook located on the counter in the Fireside Room.

Library Corner
We have a delightful nonfiction addition to our Library called The Promise Fulfilled, by Odd Lovall. It is a
portrait of Norwegian Americans today. This book details the Norwegian presence in America starting in 1825
with the sloop Restauration carrying the first boatload of Norwegian immigrants, and details the continuous
Norwegian-American history to the present day. Descendants of those immigrants are still called “sloopers.”
This book describes the settlements in the Midwest, the Great Lakes area, and the large Norwegian settlement in
the Pacific Northwest. There are wonderful pictures as well as statistical tables stating everything from religious
affiliations, to jobs, to ethnicity at colleges. The book has been beautifully researched for all kinds of
information. Page 151 even describes a halibut fishing boat from Seattle. The gentleman interviewed was in my
sister’s high school class at Ballard High. In fact, growing up, we never had to pay for halibut because my
grandparents’ fishermen friends gave them fresh halibut right off the boat at Fishermen’s Terminal, which was
immediately shared with us. There are also some pictures of skiing events, including an interview with Olav
Pedersen, who started the Ski for Light school, which teaches blind students. There is so much fascinating
information in this book that it is not possible to describe everything here. Just check it out to find out more
fascinating facts.

Social Director’s Report
Kay Schertzl
We had a wonderful evening at our Bothell Lodge May meeting. It started with a bountiful table of delicious,
international potluck dishes. The Youth Group, led by Seth Tufteland, then presented a great program of
Norwegian folk dances. Did you notice the fancy footwork involved? The last dance, the Stick Dance, was
especially impressive. In my opinion, we have the best youth group in the area, and that adds energy and
dimension to our lodge. So tusen takk ( a thousand thanks) to Seth, and our great young people.
Speaking of young people, we honored several of them that evening, giving out three college and two camp
scholarships. We selected our younger royalty. Our lovely princess Julia Olsby has agreed to another year
reign. AND, here is a first! We have a prince as well! Two male candidates stepped up for that position, and Will
Phillips was chosen by draw. Hiccup, his Norwegian name, will add a fun dimension to our royal family. We are
the only lodge that I am aware of that has a prince as well as a princess! Gratulerer med
dagen...congratulations...to all of you!
Get out your calendars and mark the following events.
June 18, our fantastic youth group will kick off summer by serving us a hot dog and burger dinner.
6:00 Social
6:30 Hot dog and Burger dinner
7:30 Brief business meeting
July 4th, the annual Bothell 4th of July parade. We will leave the lodge about 10:00 with our Viking ship and our
royalty. Come ride or walk with us!
There is no general meeting in July.
August 20, our annual Steak and Chicken BBQ. Bring a side dish for the pot luck; the lodge provides the steak and
chicken. And remember, since it is a pot luck, to bring your own plates, silverware and glasses. That evening will
also include the Classic Car Show and a performance by a nyckelharpa group.
6:00 Social
6:30 Pot luck and BBQ, car show and music
7:30 Brief business meeting
The September 17th meeting starts our fall season. The two camp scholarship recipients, Diana Hicks and Will
Phillips, will give their reports on camp, and perhaps the next round of Norwegian kings will show up. Bill Hicks
is in charge of the dinner, which I am calling "Hick's Surprise", since he hasn't decided on the menu. But we know
it will be good!
There is a lot going on in the district this summer. Editor Joan is listing events of other area lodges. I encourage
you to attend some of them for your own enjoyment, to meet other Sons of Norway members, and to support
other local lodges.
Whatever your plans, keep safe and have a super summer!
FOURTH ANNUAL CLASSIC CAR SHOW AND BBQ
Welcome back to those classic cars and owners that have thrilled us before with their cars history, their
memories and their beauty. There is room for more, so ready those vintage cars to show for the enjoyment of
all.
