music for all
BSO Music Director Andris Nelsons conducts thirteen extraordinarily wide-ranging
programs in his second full season with the orchestra. Besides leading favorite works by
Beethoven, Brahms, Debussy, Haydn, Mahler, Mozart, Prokofiev, Rachmaninoff, Ravel, and
Tchaikovsky, Maestro Nelsons continues his survey of symphonies by Dmitri Shostakovich,
as well as his series of operas-in-concert, this season with two performances of Richard
Strauss’s Elektra featuring Christine Goerke in the title role. He also leads a three-week
celebration marking the 400th anniversary of Shakespeare’s death, and introduces two
BSO commissions to the orchestra’s repertoire—American composer Sebastian Currier’s
Divisions in October, and the world premiere of George Tsontakis’s Shakespeare-inspired
Sonnets in February.
compelling collaborations
In 2015-16 Andris Nelsons joins forces with a compelling array of guest soloists, including
pianists Evgeny Kissin in Tchaikovsky’s Piano Concerto No. 1, Paul Lewis in Beethoven’s
Piano Concerto No. 3, Yefim Bronfman in Bartók’s Piano Concerto No. 2, and Nikolai Lugansky
in Rachmaninoff’s Rhapsody on a Theme of Paganini, as well as violinist Isabelle Faust
in Berg’s Violin Concerto, and, to close the season, soprano Kristine Opolais in music of
Rachmaninoff and Tchaikovsky. Also featured with Maestro Nelsons are BSO English horn
player Robert Sheena in the world premiere of a BSO-commissioned work by George
Tsontakis, and concertmaster Malcolm Lowe and principal violist Steven Ansell in Mozart’s
ever-popular Sinfonia concertante for violin and viola.
new this season – “casual fridays” series
Wear your favorite casual attire to Symphony Hall for three Friday-evening concerts this
season! In addition, this new, lower-priced “Casual Fridays” series includes a free pre-concert
reception for all concertgoers, and allows for the use of tablets–provided by the BSO–in
a designated area in the rear of the orchestra floor. Subscribers who choose to sit in this
area can view content such as in-depth information about the conductors and soloists, a
scrollable score of the music being performed, and informative notes on the program.
The series also includes a post-concert gathering in Higginson Hall with live music,
snacks, and a cash bar.

a shakespeare celebration
To celebrate the 400th anniversary of Shakespeare’s death, Andris
Nelsons leads three programs of Shakespeare-inspired music in January
and February, to include not only such popular repertoire staples as
Mendelssohn’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream music, Weber’s Overture to
Oberon, music from Prokofiev’s ballet Romeo and Juliet, and Tchaikovsky’s
overture-fantasy of that name, but also such rarities as Strauss’s
Macbeth, Dvořák’s Othello Overture, and a suite from Shostakovich’s
incidental music to Hamlet, as well as Hans Werner Henze’s BSOcommissioned, Midsummer-Night’s-Dream-inspired Symphony No. 8,
premiered here in 1993. The celebration also includes Danish composer
Hans Abrahamsen’s let me tell you, featuring, in her BSO debut, Canadian
soprano Barbara Hannigan, who sang the world premiere with Maestro
Nelsons and the Berlin Philharmonic; and the world premiere of George
Tsontakis’s Sonnets, written for BSO English horn player Robert Sheena.
Also highlighting these weeks will be a series of related events, to
encompass lecture, panel discussion, and film presentations.
spotlight on shostakovich
Andris Nelsons’s multi-season survey of Shostakovich’s symphonies 5
through 10—his symphonies composed under the shadow of Soviet
dictator Joseph Stalin—continues in 2015-16. Symphony No. 9, not played
by the BSO since 1962, figures in Maestro Nelsons’s season-opening allRussian program along with music of Tchaikovsky and Rachmaninoff.
The Symphony No. 5 follows in November, and the massive Symphony
No. 8, last played by the BSO in 2005, is performed in March.

celebrating dutilleux’s legacy
The great French composer Henri Dutilleux (1916-2013) had
longstanding ties to the Boston Symphony Orchestra, dating back
to the music directorship of Charles Munch and continuing through
the tenures of Seiji Ozawa and James Levine. To mark the 100th
anniversary of Dutilleux’s birth, the orchestra plays three significant
works by the composer. In January, with soprano Renée Fleming,
who sang the American premiere here in 2007, François-Xavier Roth
conducts the song cycle Le Temps l’Horloge, which was a BSO 125th
Anniversary Commission. This is followed later in the season by
two masterfully atmospheric symphonic works—Timbres, espaces,
mouvement, to be led by Charles Dutoit in February, and Métaboles,
on Andris Nelsons’ season-ending program in April.
all in the family
Beloved BSO Conductor Emeritus Bernard Haitink returns in March with
esteemed pianist Murray Perahia for a program pairing Beethoven’s
Piano Concerto No. 4 with Mahler’s powerful Symphony No. 1. The winds
and strings of the Boston Symphony Orchestra take center stage for
an all-Dvořák program in October; flutist Elizabeth Rowe and harpist
Jessica Zhou play Mozart’s charming double concerto; English horn
player Robert Sheena is soloist in February in the world premiere of
George Tsontakis’s Shakespeare-inspired Sonnets; and Malcolm Lowe
and Steven Ansell are featured in Mozart’s Sinfonia concertante for
violin and viola in April. BSO Assistant Conductor Ken-David Masur
leads a November program featuring pianist Louis Lortie in Liszt’s
Totentanz, Schumann’s Rhenish Symphony, and the American premiere
of Korean composer Unsuk Chin’s Mannequin, a BSO co-commission.

podium personalities
An impressive array of guest conductors again graces the Symphony
Hall podium throughout the season. Charles Dutoit continues his
multi-year residency with two colorful programs in February and
March of music by Berlioz, Dutilleux, Falla, and Ravel, joined by tenor
Paul Groves, pianist Javier Perianes, the Tanglewood Festival Chorus,
and Voices Boston, among others. Pinchas Zukerman returns as
conductor-violinist for an October program of Tchaikovsky, Elgar,
and Schubert. Christoph von Dohnányi leads a November program
to include the world premiere of a BSO commission from the young
French composer-pianist Jean-Frédéric Neuburger and also to feature
German pianist Martin Helmchen in Beethoven’s Emperor Concerto.
In January, French conductor François-Xavier Roth returns for two
weeks with soprano Renée Fleming featured in music of Dutilleux and
Canteloube, and Czech conductor Jiři Bělohlávek is joined by soloist
Johannes Moser for Dvořák’s rousing Cello Concerto. Filling out the
roster of guest conductors are Vladimir Jurowski, whose program of
Haydn, Hartmann, and Beethoven features the young Russian-born
violinist Alina Ibragimova in her BSO debut; Herbert Blomstedt,
who leads an all-Beethoven program with pianist Garrick Ohlsson;
and Stéphane Denève, whose program features Gil Shaham in John
Williams’s Violin Concerto and concludes with Saint-Saëns’s sonorous
Organ Symphony.

Three Friday-evening concerts—one each in January, February, and March—are designated
“Casual Fridays” this season. You are invited to wear your favorite casual attire, and to
arrive early to enjoy a free, pre-concert reception before you take your seat. This lowerpriced series also allows you to use tablets—to be provided by the BSO—if you choose to sit
in a designated area in the rear of the orchestra floor. View customized content designed to
enhance the concert experience, to include an in-depth look at the conductors and soloists,
a scrollable score of the music being performed, and informative notes on the program.
Then, immediately after the performance, head to Higginson Hall in Symphony Hall’s
adjacent Cohen Wing, where, besides enjoying live music, snacks, and a cash bar, you are
invited to mingle and share what you’ve just experienced at the BSO concert.

The BSO’s Family Concert Series provides engaging, age-appropriate, educational
orchestral concert experiences especially for children ages 3–8 and their families.
BSO Family Concerts are designed to build connections to the orchestra, orchestral
music, the Boston Youth Symphony Orchestras, and Symphony Hall. The BSO offers
three Family Concerts per year, one of which is performed by the BSO and conducted
by Germeshausen Youth and Family Concerts Conductor Thomas Wilkins, the other
two of which are performed by the Boston Youth Symphony Orchestras (BYSO) as part
of a larger organizational partnership. Concerts will take place on November 14, 2015,
March 5, 2016, and April 30, 2016. More information may be found at bso.org in the fall.
Don't miss these special performances of a one-hour version of Rossini's opera Cinderella,
sung in English. Suitable for children ages 6 and older.

AT SYMPHONY HALL FROM 5:30 – 6:45PM
BSO 101 returns in 2015–16, again offering the opportunity to increase your enjoyment
of BSO concerts. These Wednesday sessions with BSO Director of Program Publications
Marc Mandel joined by members of the BSO are designed to enhance your listening
abilities and appreciation of music by focusing on upcoming BSO repertoire. Each
session is followed by a free tour of Symphony Hall, and a reception offering beverages,
hors d’oeuvres, and further time to share your thoughts with others. Dates and more
information will be provided in your Subscription Package, and at bso.org in the fall.
Please note that the BSO 101 session is free, but there is a nominal charge for the
reception. RSVPs for the BSO 101 sessions will not be accepted, or tickets sold for the
receptions, until the Fall. See bso.org for details. Group rates (20 or more people) will apply

Did you know that every $1 in subscriptions and ticket sales
must be matched by an additional $1 of contributed support
for the BSO to cover its annual operating expenses? To close
that gap, we rely on the generosity of our donors across all
giving levels, including the Friends of the BSO.
FRIENDS OF THE BSO
Friends of the BSO memberships start at just $100. As a
Friend, you will enjoy many benefits and special programs
designed to enhance your concert experience. BSO Friends
have the opportunity to go behind-the-scenes at Symphony
Hall and get closer to the music at exclusive donor-only
working rehearsals. At specific giving levels, Friends are also
invited to attend special events with BSO musicians. Above
all, Friends are an integral part of the Boston Symphony
Orchestra community—a group of dedicated donors who
support the BSO’s continued artistic excellence.
