Nancy Chong
Nancy Lee Chong made her first quilt, a queen-size Hawaiian quilt, in 1980 while living in
Hawaii. She began teaching her stress-free needle turn techniques and Hawaiian quilt making in
1982 when she and her husband and daughter moved to Seattle, Washington. Nancy’s degree
in education, her experience with all styles of appliqué, and her understanding of what a
beginner goes through, have made her one of the premier appliqué teachers in the United
States. Nancy’s quilts have appeared in numerous books and magazines, and she has traveled
across the USA and Canada, sharing her stress-free approach to needle turn appliqué with
beginners and experienced quilters. She is on the faculty at QuiltUnversity.com, where she
receives rave reviews for her Hawaiian, Celtic, Baltimore and Hand Quilting classes. Watch for
her new classes there in the future.
Nancy will be presenting a trunk show with traditional Hawaiian quilts and variations on
Hawaiian quilts including her line of 2 color appliqué quilts. Her patterns are on display at Quilty
Pleasures. Visit www.prqc.com to see their full selection of appliqué quilt patterns, and
videos; and to view Nancy’s calendar, résumé and class descriptions.

Presidential Thoughts
“ Twenty-nine years ago, a group of quilter lovers formed the Simi
Valley Quilt Guild. Over the years, the SVQG has established many
rich traditions. The ‘Round Robin’, in which blocks are passed from
one to another as borders are added. Spring Retreats and Fall
retreats, each with their own set of special memories. Quilt Challenges
that inspire us to think outside the box. Sew-Ins to provide quilts to
those in need. Quilter’s College, where we can share our knowledge.
A Quilt Show where we can share our quilts with the community.
Block Party ideas to try each month. There are many more. This
past month, I was able to meet several of the former Presidents of our
guild and hear their stories. Our Guild is rich with memories and
traditions.
Happy Birthday Simi Valley Quilt Guild!
August program will be Quilt College.
We need volunteers to present a 15-minute
lecture/workshop/demonstration about any area of quilting. If you are
interested in presenting, please contact me. The guild covers the costs
of printing materials needed for your presentation.

Quilt Show 2014
Trip Around the World
Beth Bastian and Lisa Jeffries are in charge of receiving your quilts and laying them out for display. They
will be receiving quilts at the August meeting, and encourage you to bring your finished, labeled quilts
and a copy of the entry form at that time (form in this newsletter). Late entries will be accepted on
September 16.
The committee decided that each member will be allowed to enter up to three quilts, plus their completed
Round Robin (as a Group Quilt).
Since there will be Viewer Choice ribbons for Traditional, Modern and Art quilts, I thought I should
include a definition for each of the three categories. I am sure that you will not all agree with these
descriptions, but for the sake of this show, this is what we mean.
Traditional: Composed of similar blocks constructed following traditional patterns, something that has
been repeated through time.
Modern: Original blocks, or variations of traditional blocks, frequently asymmetric; quilts not made of
blocks, etc.
Art: Pictorial or abstract.
As the person who will be laying out the program booklet, it would be very helpful to me if you would
send me information on your quilt(s) as soon as you know what you will be entering. I will get a head start
on the database.
Looking forward to a great show – including your fine work – in October,
Sharon Mountford, Chairman

Greetings from the Quilt Mum!
Please stop by at whatever table I am next meeting, and sign up to help the guild sell tickets for the
Opportunity Quilt.
Ventura County Fair: Wednesday, July 30 through Saturday August 2:
Wednesday July 30th: need at least one volunteer from 3:00 pm to 5:00 pm
Thursday July 31st: Need volunteers for 1:00 pm to 3:00 pm and again from 3:00pm to 5:00 pm
Friday, August 1st: Need volunteers for 11:00 am to 1:00 pm and again from 3:00pm to 5:00 pm
Saturday, August 2nd: Need volunteers for 1:00 pm to 3:00 pm and again from 3:00pm to 5:00 pm
You get FREE ADMISSION to the Fair!
************
Quilter’s Run at The Quilter’s Studio, Newbury Park, Saturday June 21st: Need volunteers in two
hour shifts from 11:00 am to 7:00 pm.
I look forward to seeing more of you take tickets to sell for the quilt. It is one of my goals to have barely
any tickets left after the show. In fact, I would happily order additional tickets if we sell all we have
BEFORE the show. We have 151 members in our 2013-2014 roster. If each member sold just ONE
BOOK, that would sell over 900 tickets and bring in $755.00! That is 20% of the tickets we have on hand.
Many members have already sold more than one book. Won’t you do your part?
The Quilt Mum would also like to acknowledge the work of Victoria Peabody, Beth Bastian and Phyllis
Jones at the Blues Festival. They represented the guild well, and brought in money for the quilt and
publicity for the show.

Workshops
JUNE – Nancy Chong will be presenting a workshop on 2 color quilts, which are similar to Hawaiian quilts.
Nancy uses her unique method of needle turn appliqué with some of the most gorgeous patterns you will ever see.
In class we will be making a smaller version of her 2 color quilts. The class is almost filled, so sign up at Quilty
Pleasures or the May meeting. Check out her web page – www.prqc.com for pictures. Sign up at the Guild
Meeting!!!
SEPTEMBER – Nancy Ota will be presenting a workshop on Sashiko quilts. He travels often to Japan and is
familiar with traditional Japanese quilting. She designs her own patterns and incorporates traditional patterns into
her work. This workshop should fill up quickly since this is the first time she has been at our guild. Check out
her web page - www.Nancyota.com
NOVEMBER – Billie Lauder – It has been years since this charter member of our guild is presenting a workshop.
Many remember her from Simi Adult School and she may have been your first quilting teacher. She specializes
in scrap quilts that are easily made, but look much harder than they are. Check out her web page
http://www.easymade.com
Coming events
July – Make-n-take and sew for the Veterans – We will have projects that you will make for yourself or gifts,
and we will also be making adult size bibs for the VA hospital and VA home. The VA home has said that they
really need adult sized bibs for the residents. Other San Fernando Valley guilds are also making them since the
need is so great. Please bring fabric that you are willing to donate to the cause. More details to follow. Men’s
fabrics are especially needed such as NASCAR, sports, cars, etc.
August– We again are having Quilt University – This is an opportunity to learn quilting skills and techniques –
If you are willing to present, please contact me. We still have openings. Each presentation is 15 minutes and
we will be trying a rotating system so that each member will see each presentation.
September – Nancy Ota – A local artist who will delight us with her trunk show, which incorporates her
Japanese heritage. Many of you are familiar with her screen bags, which she originally brought here from
Japan. She is also an expert in Sashiko.
Check out her website – Nancyota.com

Quilts 'n Force Update for June
We received 18 finished quilts at the May Guild meeting and 10 of those were for boys,
yay; thanks to all who contributed. Also Sheila Accord and Vicky T. cleaned out there
fabric stash and we were given some very nice fabrics, a special thanks to both of them.
Below is a list of donated quilts since January 1 of 2014; if you know of any recipients'
that would love our quilts, just give us a call. I do have a list of very good charities, but
we can always add new ones. One example might be your church if it has a prayer group
for ill members, a family that has lost a lot due to a home fire; or a person in the hospital
for an extended stay and would be comforted with one of our pretty quilts, etc.
A total of 110 quilts to date are:
5 to CSUN for a study of teen pregnancy
25 Kids with cancer
4 Second Story, a secondhand store on Tapo that gives 100% to child trafficking
causes
1 For the Troops
15 To Convalescent home
60 To three hospitals for their neonatal units
